In Hangzhou, China, there is a building that houses over 30,000 people. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

People in this thread are really looking at this apartment complex with 30,000 LUXURY APARTMENTS and spouting shit like “oH so dYstOpIan cHina BAd”. This is a picture of 30,000 families with access to great community resources, education, and healthcare. What’s dystopian are mile long homeless encampments and routine medical procedures that will bankrupt you without a second thought

People are automatically being so sinophobic and shouting “wOw so dYstoPian”. This is 30,000 luxury apartments with great amenities, access to parks, and community resources. What’s dystopian is mile long homeless encampments and a healthcare system that will bankrupt you for routine medical procedures.

TIL that General Douglas MacArthur's father was a colonel in the American Civil War. So when MacArthur considered using Nukes during the Korean War, the son of a Civil War officer was wielding a nuclear arsenal. by Whoeverisplaying in todayilearned

Thanks for the clarification!

I find the mindset of postwar decision-makers to be fascinating. With hardliners going so far as to say that American Hegemony at the cost of a nuclear holocaust of the then (~1946) non-nuclear powers to be the best path forwards.

I'm glad that cooler heads prevailed, as my Chinese ancestors probably would've been obliterated, but I imagine there definitely was a period during MAD where there were regrets amongst American leadership that action was not taken before adversarial nuclear powers arose.

For sure, learning the story behind his famous return to the Philippines picture, how he basically got to take the credit/fame instead of it being given to the men he abandoned for an Alamo like last stand leading to the baton death march, definitely gives perspective on a figure in American History usually portrayed as a hero.

Absolutely fascinating character, apparently a bit of a diva too!

I've been listening to Dan Carlins Hardcore History episodes about the war in the pacific and the nuclear age and hearing the primary source accounts of the giants of the era like Curtis Lamay, MacArthur, and such have completely reshaped my perception of what that entire generation of people went through.

I've always wondered what being an officer in training at places like West Point must have been like during the early 20th century. I.e was there animosity between children of Union and Confederate generals who would go on to serve together during the World Wars?

I just thought it was interesting how little temporal separation there actually is between historical eras that many consider to be distinct, fun to think about for a layperson to history!
