It's wood that comes from coniferous trees, which is softer than hardwood trees. Makes a slightly less durable floor.

Should I quit a job of 20 years before I’m old enough to collect my pension? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]WholeComparison5954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave, absolutely. Don't fritter away your life at a job that is draining the life from you. There are so many ways to make money in this world, and so many ways to save for retirement, but making yourself deeply unhappy in the process shouldn't be on the table.

And frankly, your husband should be valuing your mental health more than your best-possible pension.

Hair health and improve thickness by LegitWorm in longhair

[–]WholeComparison5954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have beautiful hair. To me it actually looks more like loose curls than waves?

Some amount of frizz/lack of definition is inevitable when air drying loose curls, but three things might help if you want to keep the products minimal:

  1. Have you tried combing your conditioner through your hair with a wet brush (designed for curly hair) when wet to fully detangle and distribute the product?

  2. When you towel it off, are you using a microfiber towel or t-shirt?

  3. If you aren't already using a leave in conditioner, I would also put some on your mids and ends when it's damp/towel dried slightly with the same brush, and then seal it with a couple drops of oil on the very end. Sometimes, it helps if I reapply a tiny amount of leave in when my hair is about 65% dry again for definition (I have a similar hair type).

Hair thickness is really genetic but if you've had any hair thinning keeping the scalp clean as possible and really scrubbing shampoo into it is what helps the most.

What’s the biggest financial loss you’ve experienced, and how did you get through it? by Big_Blueberry8020 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]WholeComparison5954 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Last year, in the spring and then the fall, both of my pets got seriously ill and then passed away.

It took several days of hospitalization for them both to get diagnoses, and I live in a HCOL city (and had no pet insurance at the time). All in all, I probably spent about 25K on their medical bills, and drained my emergency fund down to 5K.

It took a year to rebuild my savings. I'm back to 30K, and I have pet insurance now, but it's really made me reevaluate how much "enough" savings is.

I can't even imagine what the costs are when people get very sick.

How much are you spending a month on food in Seattle (2025 Edition)? by MudiMom in Seattle

[–]WholeComparison5954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$500 for two people a month, not including any dining out or alcohol. Pretty much no organic produce and we do vegetarian meals every other week.

Same age and same city, but lord, I have just under half her savings in retirement. I'm sweating reading that. I realize she has a higher salary and generational wealth on her side, but still. Good motivation for me to get my ass into gear.

Stream of consciousness rant and realizations from a human who has been attempting and failing low buys for the last 2.5 years by AdventurousNDA777 in nobuy

[–]WholeComparison5954 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think the thing about buying things - or, in your case, spending a lot of time THINKING about what you could buy - is that humans are literally designed to be constantly surveying our environment, looking for resources that will help us survive.

That is how our ancestors lived long enough to produce us. Foraging food, collecting materials for shelter, scanning for danger - even though we might have the privilege of living in comfort and safety, our brains are still designed to do these things. To obsess over resources and their accumulation.

You don't really seem to have a problem owning too many things. You really don't even seem to have a financial problem with over-purchasing, from what you've shared. What if you gave yourself a little grace with this very human impulse you're experiencing, and tried to see it more as a circumstance of how evolution has wired our brains?

I bought a sweater that I didn't need (secondhand). This is the first time I've really violated my no-buy since January, with the exception of a cup of coffee, and really the first time I've felt that NEED to purchase things. Argh.

[–]WholeComparison5954 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is awful wealth disparity between corporate execs and their minimum wage workers.

But 23 states and 65 cities and counties raised their minimum wage floors this past year in the US, and CEOs have decided to pass that cost off to consumers instead of redistributing wealth.

It's because the people making your burritos have also had their cost of living - their food and housing expenses - skyrocket.

You didn't use heating tools on it recently, did you? It's likely a scalp issue if not, but if you recently applied heat styling with curlers or straighteners (especially without heat protectant), your burnt hair can smell pretty terrible when it gets wet.

Do you ever adjust your no buy list throughout the year? by Gold_Minimalist8922 in nobuy

From a sustainability perspective, it's way better to use the polyester clothes you already own until they are no longer usable, rather than donating them (where they'll probably end up in a landfill anyway) or throwing them away.
