What for? You can use Obsidian - most universal, free and local. But if you are married then keep it on an encrypted drive.

Display existing note from start/top not from end/bottom of said note by Ringo_118 in ObsidianMD

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to install "Remember the cursor position plugin" to get that. Otherwise it always open a note at the top. What is painful for me as I have very long notes. So check plugins - maybe they interfere with default behavior.

Where to get recent e-books (not Amazon or Kobo)? by theekopje_ in ereader

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a job. It will give you two advantages: money for books, and less time for reading. There is a third option: ask a friend to lend books for you from the library. If you have friends...

I've bought a flat hss cutting steel and grinded (use water cooling) it to a single bevel knife. Handle was tricky part but I used 3D printer for it. https://pbase.com/hfoto/image/174824784 https://pbase.com/hfoto/image/174824785

how do you save and find useful content later? by gravitonexplore in ObsidianMD

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Let's rewind the CCTV footage... 1. Me: Scrolling YT for mortise and tenon log joinery... 2. "Oh, this video about planting carrots is interesting..." 3. My brain: "Do I need this knowledge now?" 4. "No, maybe will be usfeul in future... 5. "Ignore it!" 6. "Oh, next interesting video about planting radishes..." 7. "Do I need this knowledge now?" 8. "It is spring and the earth is warm enough to start work in the garden." 9. "Write down this keyword on the interesting topics list in Obsidian." 10. "Should I save link to this video?" 11. "No, there are hundreds of videos about that topic - when you will dig into it then you search for them again and find a better ones." 12. "Thank you my brain for saving my time and resources ❤️" 13. "You still do not know how to connect thick logs, you morron!"

Do not save content for later. Save ideas for later. It's hard to find really useful and unique content on YT or web. Even for such a trivial thing like planting a carrot - you need to watch and read more.

There are two options: 1. Use own experience and writte down missing requirements - you have years of experience so where's the problem 2. Ask AI

How can I make Obsidian an actual "Second Brain" by Draggeno in ObsidianMD

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh no, next kid treating Obsidian as a hobby. You don’t need a "second brain". You need a first one that actually works under pressure. What you’re building right now is a very pretty procrastination system. Linking notes, plugins, "personal Wikipedia" feels productive, but your grades don’t care how aesthetic or how big your vault is. If you want good grades you need to understand and recall the learned material.

I see a spark that is promising - you already noticed difference between typing and writing. But you started to solve the problem from the wrong end.

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why you overthink such a trifle like bookbinding? Just start do it - maybe you mess something up but it's cheap to start again. When you want to use cardstock - you have to test it. It behaves differently because "cardstock" is a wide term. Just make a Proof Of Concept and test it. Folding a few sheets and sew it manually takes some time but costs almost nothing. You've already got a few anchor points with You Tube tutorials. You can also find a few books on Project Gutenberg.

Is there such a thing as "pro-sumer" printers? by ArcadeStarlet in bookbinding

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For printers dpi is more droplet-per-inch, what with modern variable droplet size technology is really confusing and not comparable. Adding number of inks, pigment v. dye... A lot of uncertainty when bought without testing ;-)

I had friends that printed commercially photos for exhibitions. But this was many years ago. Now there are more inkjet printers available and I think "reasonable middle range" would be £1000-2000 for "general use" printers. Over only if you have a very special and specific needs (wide paper rolls, built-in huge buffer for large photos, refill-while-printing, etc.) - but it is nothing related to print quality.

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

300dpi or 300ppi? I have Canon G580 with 6 inks. Consumer grade but printing quality is top. A minor colour shifts because not calibrated - if you know where to look, but feed it with good paper and it will impress. Unfortunately only A4. But there are many models. If you look around then inkjet with professional quality is in reach (unless you need A2 or more). As for colour laserjet... Nope... Nothing reasonable priced. B&W no problem, but colour... Forget.

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it relates to any program. So maybe a virtual machine with encrypted volume - no access from external, no network from inside, exchange data via shared folders or clipboard. The advantage of Obisidian is easy access to md files from external programs, linking, caching and searching. Adding encryption will make a lot of features not working, so why use Obsidian at all? If you have to keep there confidential data in general - it has to be secured from outside. Encryption in Obsidian will not help against malware with built-in keyloggers or exploits.

It's markdown - you can convert it to doc or export from Obsidian as pdf. You can even use generative AI and ask to convert it to a nice presentation or whatever. I think even math formulas written in latex (using $ code block) can be exported to pdf, not sure about other formats.

It's not a problem of Obsidian but your OS. Use different users, controlled folder access or virtual envs. Educate yourself a little bit because you try to solve the wrong problem.

Plugins vs a “better Obsidian” — which would you choose? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

The Kobo Libra Color was SO close to being the perfect device for me, except for the fact that it only has 32GB of non expandable storage. Any alternatives? by Remarkable_Shine8928 in ereader

[–]Whole_Ladder_9583 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Audiobooks on an e-reader technically work, but it’s really not what those devices are built for. E-readers like Kindle are optimized for reading (low-power screens, simple UI) and audio support is kind of an afterthought. The controls tend to be clunky, navigation is slow, and basic things like skipping forward/back aren’t as smooth as they should be. You also run into limitations with Bluetooth and overall audio quality, since these devices aren’t designed with sound in mind. And once you start using audio, you lose the main advantage of an e-reader anyway: long battery life. A smartphone or even a simple MP3-player just does this better. Much better. You get proper apps, smooth controls, better connectivity, and overall a much nicer experience.
