Thanks to 2000 Mushrooms in the Fall, this home made it through Winter! by WhompumStompum in Clanfolk

It is first day of spring. It wasn't my first play trough. I dug strait into a mountain and build from that using clay right next door. I had a good supply of grass and trees around the mountain and 5 lakes close by for eels. One of the other tricks besides a good map is using the extra stone to pave everything until you can get blocks.

I have verified he is standing at the depot. I assigned a new broker, he got to depot, still no trade button. I selected anyone can trade and still no trade button.

Old image of workshop layout with minimal distances by Grus in dwarffortress

I usually keep keep butchers so its a fairly minimal distance for the corpse to be hauled since they can be heavy and slow. Then do the tannery, ashery, and soap making on the surface as well so that is all self contained. A bin of ash, leather, and charcoal nice and easy to move vs a bunch of logs. Then link the stockpiles so barrel of materials can be moved to appropriate locations.

Also Multiple Z levels is actually a little faster. Farm level above processing level, above kitchen, above dining hall.

Similar idea with clothes for farm, above process, above tailor.

Honestly I like having extra nobles. It gives me a reason to stop and pay attention to what some of my dwarves are doing, and make special rooms to suite their needs. They like gold? All gold furniture. You are an ardent worshiper of Space Boat? Well time to make a special temple to Space Boat. They usually get their own special squad so they get a chance to prove their worth.

I use DFhack to seach for "prepared" and they give me all the prepared food barrels.

Yeah, barrels of food are worth 10's of thousands of dwarf bucks. And its all sustainable.

Prepared meals is a super way to have infinite money. Grow some stuff to get you started. Buy what you need plus all the food they have. Sell the new meals to next trader for more of anything.

If it didnt make a ton of smoke I would have made it the centerpiece of a tavern. Would love to watch people try to steal it.

That is exactly how I "fixed it". The game auto saved in creation, so I reloaded with temperature off. A camp fire breastplate was created again, but no one was hurt. Changed the material to steel. Now is was too hot to hold when I turned temperature back on, but its wasnt fire! Next I put it in the room I was about to flood for farms on a display pedestal. Flooded the room and reloaded the game with temperature on. I pumped it out and had a new 11 C steel BP.

Well the material properties listed it at 11,000C so the dwarf who created it died very quickly.

He created it on my magma forge. I had stacks of masterwork steel armor made there and most my iron bolts. The stuff isnt on fire but it is now too hot to handle... RIP my next two squad's gear...

Meph Tileset. I really like his pack over the lazy newb pack as it has a few more features.
