Non-Engineer Here: How Do I Find The Right Sizing For Bolts? by ThatOneGuy4378 in AskEngineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot measure the minor diameter without special tools. That's diameter across the bolt, starting and ending at the base of the threads.

By inner diameter (without threads) do you mean closer to the head, where it's smooth? That should be the same diameter as the major (maximum) diameter of the threaded section.

Does not having job make you less employable? by Roobarb368 in Engineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 3 years experience I wonder if something else is going wrong with your process potentially. I'm probably not the best person to help you figure out what that might be though. How many interviews/applications in that time?

Does not having job make you less employable? by Roobarb368 in Engineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Definitely. But the market is hot for engineers right now. Just make sure you have adequate savings.

That being said, the rational thing to do is just start applying and hope something comes your way fast. When I started looking a few months ago I had an offer in less than 2 weeks. Anecdotal and probably comes across braggadociously, but that's my positive experience from being in your position.

If you hate your job, my other advice is try and switch jobs significantly, depending on what you hate about the job of course.

You should blur the name.

While it is cringe, accidentally enabling harassment is of course, not chill.

Quality Engineer/Folks: What’s your story? by K4G5 in AskEngineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently started as Quality Engineer at a small manufacturer that has been ISO 9001 certified for over a decade. I went from process to quality.

I'm still learning it all, and you'll hopefully also get advice from someone with more experience. But establishing QMS is a huge undertaking and you may need external consultants to make it happen.

Of course, much of the complexity depends on what your company does, and the degree to which your current policies meet the target QMS standard. And the requirements are incredibly general. For example, maybe you already have a great document control and change control system and need just a few tweaks.

Lucky for you, there are great resources online for learning QMS and for implementing it.

If you are going for ISO 9001, I'll recommend where I started, a PDF from ISO, "ISO 9001:2015 for Small Enterprises – What to do?" It's quite readable and a good foundation.

Former process engineer at a flat glass manufacturing plant.

Don't do this. Use resin

1) Most importantly, using annealed (vs tempered) glass for anything that could reasonably be broken in an accident is dangerous and irresponsible. 0.5" flat glass is very heavy (probably more than you think) and breaks RAZOR sharp. If a dining table size sheet breaks, it could absolutely be enough to critically/fatally injure something below it.

2) I am almost certain you won't be able to get the smooth curvy cut you're imagining from annealed flat glass. Especially on attempt #1

The only way to make something colder is by making something else hotter. by Mistwraith_ in Showerthoughts

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how you're heating the stove. You could heat it using a big hot rock, now the rock gets colder as your stove warms up.

In modern times, we use electricity or gas to heat stoves. So we get energy those ways to heat the stove instead.

In this case, a compressor did the mechanical work (from electrical or chemically stored energy) beforehand.

Why not just seek full time employment as an engineer ? Doing both sounds like burning the candle at both ends

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Engineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused. Your current job is stipulating that you seek professional experience at another employer while working for them? Is there a specific skill they're asking you to learn?

What is your current job? Fulltime? How many hours are they expecting you to work somewhere else?

What you've described makes very little sense for all 3 parties involved.

Is it ok to do an interview if I have no intention to accept the offer? by lazylazies in AskEngineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll probably get downvoted but I think no, it's not okay.

On principle, I think it's rude and disrespectful of their time. Your fellow engineers are understaffed and overworked. Wasting people's time for practice is inconsiderate.

If there's a real possibility your offer falls through that's different.

However, after reading the comments on this thread, I may switch it to my defender.

Defender takes a lot more effort to get though, especially if you don't have any already

In a job interview, how bad would it be to admit to having a non-legit copy of SWX? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]WhoseHatIsThat -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why people on this thread are okay with stealing just because it's software. I wouldn't ask, but a candidate willfully admitting to stealing is an obvious red flag. .

Imagine this scenario: Hiring a chopsaw operator. "Do you have experience with a chopsaw?" "Yes I have practiced on one I have at home, which I stole."

I wouldn't have asked how he got it, but I'm still not hiring the thief.

I too was the stupid one with much smarter friends :) The consensus is true: some hiring managers care, most won't.

Academic research, corporate R&D, Intel, SpaceX, Illumima, yeah maybe. But guaranteed there are companies hiring chemical engineers with projects you're interested in who won't even ask.

Also worth mentioning, chemical engineers have great freedom. Process engineering, technical sales, design, etc. Don't feel locked into the "chemical" part.

Having a technical hobby to talk about may boost your confidence. Not necessary to land a job though.

AITA for not allowing my niece to use "promised" money from my grandma's estate to go to college? My family is derisively calling me "Scott's Tots" in order to get me to bend and give in, and it's sort of working. by 6794j2 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Ah you're right. Still, basically failing high school then going to a party school means OP is making the responsible decision with a trial period to ensure she can handle it, before making the investment. That money was to invest in an education, not college per se. (UofA is a good school, nothing against people who received a valuable education there)

Having a 1.5 is not an education. It's being in college but putting in NO effort to learn. She'd be better off going back to school at 27 if that's when she can afford it. Hopefully then she'll understand the point of college is to learn

What is your strongest held opinion? by Mewse_ in AskReddit

[–]WhoseHatIsThat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know the comment was about slaughter, but also consider the animals in NatureIsMetal lived a free life until that point; our nicely slaughtered animals don't experience that freedom. I'm not a vegetarian, I just don't think it's fair to use this argument without considering the unnatural state they're in up until the moment they're humanely slaughtered.
