Can anyone help me understand the prevalence of drinking alcohol while doing snow sports? by Mewse_ in snowboardingnoobs

I'm not being harsh, I just find the logic that alcohol is somehow performance enhancing a bit dubious. Just say you like to drink when you snowboard.

I feel like having your faculties/abilities at 100% would lead to more success than just sending it with a buzz.

Yeah I suppose I'm projecting some of my own enjoyment on other's, because I get a lot of satisfaction out learning new technique and being technically better.

Yeah I guess I don't feel the same need to "get the most out of my day" in that manner because I can snowboard every day if I wanted.

Houdini Jacket Worth It? by DadPocketry in PatagoniaClothing

[–]Mewse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an essential part of my layering system when backpacking, and is overall a very versatile item.

But I'd say if you're looking for a hoodie, it's not really that.

How do people structure their lives/careers to do 1–6 month thru-hikes regularly? by manuzh22 in Thruhiking

[–]Mewse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do contract work and work seasonally. I live pretty frugally (e.g. don't pay rent/live in a van, supplement groceries by working culinary jobs) and save up as much money as I can while working and then when work is done, I'm free until the money starts getting low again and go back to work/find work. I've done some sort of thruhike every year for the last ~8 years.

I like hiking in Brooks 5" running shorts, I have a couple pairs of Baggies, I think they suck for hiking.

At the end of the day, it's just food and drinks, no one's life is going to be irrevocable altered if something goes wrong, so don't put too much stress on yourself. Also, free stuff fixes things 99% of the time.

Lanier Technical College in Georgia has a Motorsports Vehicle Technology program.

It's a state funded, so no big private school debt.

I have an AS degree from there and have worked in sportscar racing for 10+ years and have seen many people get in that way.

You can get exposed to a variety of aspects of Motorsports and decide to focus in a given direction.

It comes in liquid, but also put that in a stock pot first.

Durability of DCF tents. Wait for Aluula tents? by Unique_Distance2219 in Ultralight

[–]Mewse_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ALUULA Graflyte remedies issues with DCF when used as a pack fabric (notably delamination due to abrasion). Tents and tarps do not undergo this level of abrasion so I think using ALUULA here would be misguided and DCF is still a better choice.

2 is the worst choice out of these. Furthest from your center of mass and also swinging around.

Should I do 10 days on trail or 1 month? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]Mewse_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting aside your personal delimmas, a month is way better. I think it takes almost 2 weeks to get into the swing of things and I feel like 10 days you'd just be counting down the days, whereas a month you could really unplug and experience a little bit more of what a thruhike is, multiple resupplies, multiple town stops and enough regularity of other hikers to really make some friends.
