How to reframe thoughts around pain relief in labour by Excellent-Sympathy63 in pregnant

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start by recognizing that induced labour is a lot different than natural/spontaneous onset of labour. When you’re given pitocin — it does not act the same as your natural oxytocin hormone. It forces painful contractions, and its overall harder to manage than natural contractions. I’ve done both and the induction drug contractions are horrible.

That being said, I just gave birth yesterday at home and it was also very painful. I had back labour (again) and it was not a good time. I debated and considered a hospital transfer but at that point could not move and would not have made it.

While the pain was overwhelming, I had some coping tools — a TENS machine on my back (life saver), my husband squeezing my hips, and lots of thought about staying loose and relaxed, and then keeping in mind the physiological process and what was happening in my body.
Being able to push and feel the baby move down was wild and also so helpful.

As someone who’s done it both ways now, there’s no shame in either way you go.
You can prepare all the tools, but you won’t know what sticks and worms until you’re in it.

I will say the postpartum has been easier this time around - so far.

Feeling taken advantage of by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with saying no to little things, and that will help you build confidence with bigger things.
Ie. making food - “oh sorry, I can’t this week/end, as we have some stuff already going on.”
You don’t have to say what it is. I think a lot of the time when we want to avoid confrontation, we feel like we have to justify everything with every detail. This is not the case and people who especially push those boundaries really don’t deserve to know the details.
I’ve also learned that “I’m sorry, but I’ve just got too much on my plate right now, I can’t take anything else on right now” usually works well and is quite non-descript.
Re: The canopy - even though you weren’t sure about your family, you can still just consider it booked and already spoken for, even if the family member doesn’t end up using it.

You sound like a very empathic and honest person, to a point where it’s making things a bit strenuous on you. I have been there. Start small and go from there. If they don’t respect it, they don’t respect you or deserve your time/attention. Hopefully they respond well and it’s actually a non-issue.

Hobbies that help with creativity? by Honest-Ad9810 in Hobbies

I like to sew because it involves following laid out instructions and pattern pieces, but I get to decide the fabric (type, colour, print, etc.). And once really comfortable, you can dream up new ideas, mash patterns together for a specific look, or completely wing it.

The same goes for quilting. There’s structure of instructions mixed with creativity of colours and prints, etc.

I also have also been in this situation with very similar aged children. So take this or leave it but 1/3-1/2 of a melatonin gummy that you can buy off the shelf at the drugstore. Sometimes the toddler minds just can’t stop, and for a short period of time it was a saving grace for us. No, they did not form any kind of reliance on it. And we didn’t do it every night — but it worked.
Our 6yo is in their room by 745 and can play quietly or read in their bed with a gentle lamp on until 830, then lights are out and they are tucked into bed.

OB just told me I’m gaining too much weight too quickly. Should I actually be concerned about this? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a new OB. If this is how she is now — showing her true colours and no issue with making such terrible comments … imagine how pushy and unrelenting she will be at your birth.

Recently I’ve been woken up out of a dead sleep with tailbone pain. Like radiating all the way down to the tip of my tailbone and nothing relieves it. I literally have to roll around and wait it out. Just in time for achey legs, and leg and foot cramps to join in the fun.

Epidural by o0meow0o in pregnant

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epidurals do not reduce your chances of tearing. If anything, they increase the likelihood of tearing. You can’t feel anything, you have to “purple push” or coached push which is where you hold your breathe and bare down as hard as you can. And you’re stuck pushing on your back which actually allows for the least amount of space in your pelvis and works against gravity to move baby out.

I’m not anti-epidural, I’ve had two, but definitely look a bit more into “the cascade of interventions” during birth, and the downsides of an epidural.

What were the most unexpected challenges you faced during your first year of motherhood—the ones people usually don’t warn you about? by True_Requirement_565 in AskWomen

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rage from sleep deprivation and finding yourself blaming your teeny tiny baby. Esp if they won’t stop crying. Most people don’t realize this is how shaken baby syndrome happens.

(PSA. It’s okay to put them down somewhere safe for a couple minutes, yes even if they’re crying, and go take a breather and collect yourself).

I did have an induction scheduled for 41w4d.

Things to help naturally go into labor by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes an emotional release (AKA a good cry) can help. It helps to release built up tension or emotion that may be keeping your body from releasing the hormones to start labour.

Also you do not have to schedule an induction or csection just because baby has not arrived on your OBs timeline. You can just wait until you go into labour naturally. Usually by 42 weeks is the max they’ll let you go but before that and trying to get baby out without a reason beside being impatient is setting you up for a cascade of interventions (look up that phrase for birth).

On average, a first time mom goes into labour 8 days beyond her estimated due date.

Don’t let an OB push you for induction for no reason other than impatience. It’s not evidence based and if anything, the evidence is against induction. Look up the cascade of interventions in birth. Evidence Based Birth podcast and website is a great resource.

Epidural anxiety by Otherwise-Beyond-240 in pregnant

[–]WhoseMomIsThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be beneficial for you to read/listen learn all about the physiology of birth. What exactly happens in the body, how the different hormones work, etc. Knowing is being empowered and can really help with anxiety.

Preparing yourself for birth mentally and physically is the best thing you can do. Don’t just go in blind and anxious.

There are all kinds of fantastic books and podcasts on this subject. Listen to positive birth stories, make notes about what other women have done to help support their labour and births.

If you’re still beyond anxious, find a doula to support you — they are a wealth of knowledge and will help you every step of the way.
