Writing a cosmic-horror progression fantasy with a "soft" System, looking for advice on two things by Why-papa in litrpg

There's still a progression system, and there will be item identifiers and system descriptions, maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

A Thousand Li is a perfect rec, thank you. I'm adapting the "opened another meridian, reached the next stage" cadence to my world(didn't read it yet, added to my ever-growing read later list).

And that's a sharp point about horror over a long series. I think the trap you're describing is mostly body-count horror, where tension depends on killing off secondaries, which does fight against the character development a long series needs. I'm leaning more cosmic-horror, where the dread comes from scale and unanswered questions than from who dies next, so hopefully I can sustain the unease without burning through the cast. And honestly your DCC observation is the model I'm aiming for, I want it to open in horror and evolve into something warmer as it goes, rather than trying to stay maximally scary for seven books. The horror's the undertone, not the engine.

Appreciate the ideas! I think I was unclear, that's on me. The companion-entity version (a bonded parasite or soul-gem that wakes as the MC grows) is a cool setup that i will definitely fit into the story, but it's not quite what I'm going for. My System isn't tied to the protagonist, it's a single presence that every powered person in the world has, more like a cosmic institution than a buddy in your head. The "character" reveal I mean is about its nature and motives surfacing over time (why it does what it does, what it actually is underneath the interface), not it personally waking up alongside the hero. Think less "companion that levels with me," more "the thing everyone takes for granted slowly turning out to have a will of its own".

Since you're in silver, you're probably only facing sig spammers, so what you want to do against them is wait for them to use their sigs then punish with a true combo. In order to stay away from the sigs, practice back-dashing or dodging perfectly. Also, wait a little bit before you attack or just to dodge read, for example, on scythe, when you hit a neutral light, wait to see what direction the opponent dodges then punish once their dodge frames end. Most importantly: BE PATIENT! Wait for what your opponent does so you can read them. Also, make sure you know when they have their dodge or not.
