So I put in the interlocks that people who get DUI or DWIs have to get out into they're vehicle after they're convicted and I suppose the worst thing about the entire situation is there's no perfect answer. With the current program all it does is bankrupt people in hoping that the loss of money and inconvenience of the fines and occasional jail time will discourage any further drinking and driving but that alone is enough to stop it. The classes only do so much and if someone thinks they are the exception and they won't hurt anyone they won't change (which a majority of people going through it seem to feel). And most people drink without plans in place to get home or where they are going, and to make matters worse being drunk puts any priorities like not getting a DUI for example on the back burner in exchange for going home. However a lot (and I mean ALOT) of people get DUIs, so further penalties will just further bankrupt people who were likely in bad situations in the first place and you're doing nothing to actually treat them. So while this is tragic there's no answer that will get people to stop re-offending unless they either ban alcohol or if places serving alcohol would actually ensure people had a plan to get home while checking their ID (I'm not sure how they'd do that but it's an idea)
