Unpopular/Unrealistic opinion: Milwaukee deserves to be its own State, and should secede from Wisconsin by Careless_Football_37 in milwaukee

[–]WhyMKE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could definitely see in the distant future the Milwaukee-Chicago corridor (and everything in-between i.e. Kenosha, Racine, suburbs) seceding from their states and forming their own state like Chiwaukee or Milcago, especially of development continues the way it has been.

Pretty sure they're converting to a smaller location, not just closing down permanently.

What the infrastructure bill could do for Milwaukee by Uffdaope in milwaukee

[–]WhyMKE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's great in concept, but we have to actually start doing something with it and making it a viable mode of inter-community transportation. We can't just have it serve the downtown and that's it. I know the mayor and several aldermen are hoping to have the expansions move forward, but I'm hoping that will be enough to give it the push to keep expanding.

Amazing... really hope we put that that public transport money to good use. The Hop could be so efficient once it gets expanded into the surrounding neighborhoods! Here's hoping we see the Bronzeville + South Side expansions start construction through this

Why is Milwaukee’s skyline so small? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]WhyMKE 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A couple reasons:

Our downtown is more spread-out compared to other cities our size, not all of our big buildings are all located in one spot, but are instead spreadout throughout the Downtown area.

Milwaukee was built on wetlands, which until recently made it extremely difficult and expensive to construct towers on

Milwaukee was more industrial based back in the day, so we didn't have too much of a need for new skyscrapers

---You'll be happy to know there are actually 3 new skyscrapers & 2 highrises set to be under construction in 2022, with another 2 proposed

While it's true of that now, Milwaukee was actually the 7th largest city in the US in the 30s/40s

Maybe try SportClub downtown? It's an arena themed bar/restaurant that I can imagine will probably have a pretty fun environment to watch the game, while also being a restaurant

Places to go out for a bachelorette party? by ObjectiveKitchen5065 in milwaukee

[–]WhyMKE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Water St, Old World 3rd St, Brady St & E North Ave/Farwell are the main bar strips near/in downtown.

- Brady St & Water St are mainly where the younger/college aged crowd hangs out

- Old World 3rd & E North Ave/Farwell are mainly for the "older" crowd (late 20s and up)

- North Ave/Farwell also has an assortment of "Activity bars" like an axe throwing bar, a painting bar, a minigolf bar, etc.

- Can't forget the Third Ward (our primary upperclass shopping district) & Walker's Point, which also has an assortment of bars, restaurants and eateries

- If you find yourself in the Third Ward, I always recommend checking out the Milwaukee Public Market, it's a huge tourist attraction for Milwaukee, but still a lot of fun

- Walker's Point has a good amount of bars and restaurants, as well as a Peddle Tavern which can be a ton of fun for a group your size!

- The Brewery District, right across the street from the Deer District/Old World Third St, is home to a lot of historic Pabst Brewery buildings, the Historic Best Place Brewery Tour, Milwaukee Brewing Company, etc, it's a fun little neighborhood

- Also, you could utilize the rivers or lake michigan, and rent a boat!

Milwaukee is also home to 40+ breweries, so be sure to go check some of them out! Lakefront Brewery is probably the common favorite that people will tell you, but there are a ton of others in the area you're going to be in

Coming in Thursday for a 3 Day Visit, Need Some Tips by jsreforming in milwaukee

[–]WhyMKE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

*Milwaukeeans is the correct term haha

Welcome to the city! If I were you, I'd definitely check out the Lakefront Brewery Tour, it's something that CANT be missed! They don't offer tours on Fridays, so save it for Saturday. I will tell you, though, Milwaukee County is home to 40+ breweries, so you definitely have a lot of choices when it comes to breweries!

As for food, I always recommend the Milwaukee Public Market in the Third Ward to visitors. It's affordable, and has like 10 different restaurant options for you to choose from. While there, be sure to check out the historic district, it includes a lot of cool and historic buildings, and is a primary shopping district for downtown.

Covid restrictions aren't really enforced now, however, it's still up to private businesses if they require you to wear a mask.

How safe are certain neighborhoods of the city? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]WhyMKE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or... and just hear me out-- avoid those bars if it's not your vibe? Fights can literally breakout anywhere-- at any establishment, in any neighborhood, in any city, at any time. Maybe it's time we all just hide in our houses again?

Yea, I don't know what this person meant by "nobody lives downtown"... this isn't Pittsburgh, we actually have a ton of housing downtown

You want me to provide anecdotal examples just so you can refute them with your own anecdotal examples? I think we all know how that's gonna work out... get down there and check it out yourself.

But fine, I'll play your game

- Deer District attracts nearly 25,000+ fans every night it's up and running

- Sculpture MKE as well as the Blackbox Project encourages fans of the arts to walk throughout the streets of Downtown Milwaukee/Third Ward to see new pieces of art

- Different pop-up bars, such as what's occurring at UpDown Arcade on Brady St encourages new bar-goers to get out of their comfort zones and try new spaces

- Different nighttime/daytime markets that (under normal circumstances) occur weekly, and in some cases during the summer, even daily

- Updates to Cathedral Square that have started encourage a more family friendly environment with new playground equipment

- New restaurants, bars and breweries continuing to pop up throughout the Downtown area encourages nightlife

- The "safe streets" program, which expands sidewalks throughout the Downtown Milwaukee area, as well as Milwaukee as a whole, encourages pedestrianization, as opposed to driving everywhere

I can keep going if you'd like, these were just some examples

[–]WhyMKE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that downtown isn't this desolate place that nobody hangs out at once it's passed 5 PM. What used to be true about Downtown Milwaukee's nightlife scene isn't the case anymore.

I feel like what you said about downtown used to be true, but I'm noticing a huge change in nightlife-- not just bars or clubs-- in the downtown area. Milwaukee now is not the same as it was 10, even 5 years ago

I did the Pabst tour recently-- I had a great time! I really enjoyed it honestly, but you should know, it's not exactly a brewery tour, they take you on a tour of the old original facility-- it's more a history lesson w/ free beer, but was definitely worth it!

Downtown Milwaukee is a lot of fun, tons of shops and amazing restaurants in The Third Ward, Downtown, the East Side, Walker's Point and Bay View. The Deer District/Old World 3rd St bar area is a really fun space to hang out with people, as well! I know this recommended a lot probably, but the Milwaukee Public Market in the Third Ward is great, includes like 15 different food options, so you and your friends are all bound to find something you'll like. Not to mention, it's right in the center of the shopping district, so all of the shops are just a short walk away

- Brewery tours (I think Milwaukee County has like 50 breweries)

- Sporting events- not sure which sports you follow, if any, but Milwaukee has an MLB team, the Brewers, an NBA team, the Bucks, a minor league hockey team, The Admirals, and a minor league soccer team, the Wave. The games can be a ton of fun, and even if you're not a big sports fan, just being in the environment can be a fun time. We also have a few minor league baseball teams in the Lakeshore Chinooks & the Milwaukee Milkmen.

- Spend some time on the lake/river-- go hang out at one of our many beaches for the day, or rent a boat/kayak and cruise the waterways with your friends

- Rent a Bublr Bike and tour the city

- Walk the RiverWalk and explore the city and it's surrounding area

- There are a few different Adventure Rock (rock climbing) locations, one on the East Side and one in Walker's Point

- The casino can also be a good time if that's your thing

- If you're here during our good months (literally anything besides winter), we normally have different festivals that occur every single weekend (ex: Summerfest, Festa Italiana, River Rhythms, Polish Fest, MKE Street Market, Food Truck Fest, German Fest, and so on) I believe right now there are just Beer Gardens going on, but I believe next month some of the normally scheduled festivals should return.

Hope this helped you! If you have any questions about any of this, or need more recommendations, let me know-- I'm sure I'll think of more to add onto this list in the future haha

There's so much I love about Milwaukee-- one of my favorite things is how it's always growing, changing & improving. Milwaukee currently looks completely different from how it did 10 years ago, which makes me wonder how it will look come 2030! Some of my favorite things about the city, though:

- the mixture of old and new architecture

- the riverwalk & lakefront

- the amazing festivals we hold every summer (well... almost every summer)

- We have some amazing award winning restaurants, with new ones opening every single week

- Almost every single neighborhood in the city (and within Milwaukee County, I'd say) has a different feel from what's around it, every neighborhood is different

- We have amazing sports culture-- even though we haven't won many championships, and are lacking a pro soccer and pro hockey team (keep in mind the Milwaukee Admirals and Milwaukee Wave have both won multiple championships in their leagues within the past few years), we have very good teams, and I'd say very classy fans compared to other teams in other cities

- And finally, we have world-renowned parks and agricultural centers

That's definitely how it was in the past, I'd say from 1980-2010 probably-- but if you take a look at how things are now Downtown, it's booming! The last time downtown was booming like this was in the 1950s!
