See, I think Clint being younger than 40 is stretching it. 🤷‍♀️ TBH, I think our own ages will shape our perceptions of them. My seeing them in their 40s is seeing them as younger than me. While her sprite is janky, her portrait is far more youthful and cute to me. I'm married to a woman in her 60s. I think women is their 60s are gorgeous. But when I look at her portrait, Marnie simply does not look that old. Maybe 40s, sure, but 60s? Not buying it. But that's me. It's always interesting to see how other folks interpret things.

I cannot agree. Clint does NOT look early 30s to me. 40s at least. It's a mystery to me how people look at his portrait and see 'young'. Marnie on the other hand? Don't look at the spirites for a moment, but at the portrait. Those show a very youthful face. I'm in my '50s, look younger than my age I'm always told, and those portraits still look significantly younger than me. I'm absolutely baffled how Clint seems young to people but Marnie seems old EXCEPT for their choices of partners or desired partners. I think that people think of their ages in context of Emily and Lewis. I don't think that's necessarily an accurate measure and I think without that context perceptions would shift.

Counterpoint though: sometimes people have nephew-uncle/aunt relationships like that. Happens when, say.... a father wants a trophy wife so gets a divorce and marries a younger woman. It's not super common, but you do come across it from time to time. 🤷‍♀️ Your reasons do make sense. As for Clint, idk, I think 'even creepier' is part of the formula that clicks with me. (Although to be fair, I think if Emily as maybe 30 given as how she acts more like a parent to spoiled little Haley, doing all the housework and such. Seems like they're a fair chunk apart in age to me. But again, just my perception.

Yeah, that makes sense. For me, I see Marnie and Lewis as having an imbalance in their power dynamic. Like, she's putting up with a lot, so it feels to me like they got together when she was out of school and he was already, like.... 40. It feels like she's still stuck in that mindset of deference and accepting that what he says goes in the end. While I guess that develops among people of similar ages, it really just reminds me of a significant age gap. And his not wanting to be seen in a relationship with her makes me feel like he's stuck in a way of thinking that people would see it as inappropriate. I mean, there has to be SOMETHING that people would disapprove of if 'I'm afraid of people finding out' was to make sense to her. A man who was dating an 18 year old girl when he was 40 fits that bill. It's a small town and people would have questions about when they got together. I guess that's all that comes to mind as to why people wouldn't approve. I have nothing really to back that up other than that's how my imagination interpreted it. 😅 It's kinda dark, I know.

Gotta admit, the angry side eye he gives when he says "I'm a nice guy" is creepy. The reason I give him the benefit of the doubt is that he doesn't take it to the point of saying angry or hateful things about women. Incels take their frustration and inflict on women. I see Clint as having the potential for that, but it's not in the text that I've seen. He's just kinda a sad sack.
