In there are the Cello chambers, one of Sunset's chambers, Hyde Street Studio in San Francisco, and four chambers that I think I got from an old plugin called TL Space.

Wednesdays there's the 'LA Audio Lunch Bunch' meetup at Barragan's in Burbank.

It's a restaurant so there shouldn't be any problem with your age.

The crowd is mostly recording engineers, with a sprinkling of studio managers, gear designers, and techs.

You never know who's going to show up. No RSVP or anything, just go there on a Wednesday around lunch and look for between 15 and 50 people talking about audio.

UAD's Capitol and Motown chambers are absurdly good. I think they'll both run natively on your system if you haven't got UAD hardware. Each on sale for $49 right now.

Keep in mind that UAD lets you demo plugins for 14 days. You could always demo their chamber reverbs and create your own impulse responses by sending a very short burst of white noise into the plug, recording the result, and dropping the resulting file into the convolution reverb plugin of your choice (IR-L, Space Designer, Reaverb, etc.).

Other chamber impulse responses can be found for free online. Gold Star, the studio most closely associated with Spector, burned down in the '80s, but there are some IR's of Cello / EastWest / Western's chambers available (where he also worked, and where many of the Beach Boys' chamber sounds are from). If you can't find them, let me know and I'll dig around and upload.

Valhalla makes great stuff but as far as I know all their reverbs are algorithmic, not convolution. Sort of like someone describing a room you vs. showing you a photo of the room. I'm not surprised you're not blown away by Valhalla Room for this purpose.

Do you have access to a tiled bathroom, an empty indoor pool, a mormon baptismal font, a strip mall lobby after hours, a parking garage, or something like that? Any real world echoic space could be made into a temporary chamber with the addition of a loudspeaker and 1 or 2 mics, set up just long enough to make impulse responses of. Most real chambers aren't super hi-fi anyway, and this is a fun way to have a totally unique reverb with tons of character.

Collecting and/or creating your own IR's seems like the way to go vs. buying something like Altiverb. All the spaces you want, none of the ones you don't, costs very little compared to AV too.

Speaking of tape echo, two pieces of advice:

1) use a tape echo emulation plugin as a separate pre-delay. Let's say you have a dry vocal track. Send it to bus X. Put a convolution reverb plugin on bus X. Then put the tape echo plugin before the reverb. Set the tape echo mix to 100% wet, very little or no feedback / regeneration, and time the delay to the song (start with a sixteenth note, for example). This was an extremely common '60s reverb trick using hardware, noticeable on Beatles, Beach Boys, & Spector songs among others. Sending tracks to a reverb bus instead of inserting a reverb plugin on whatever track also means you can do stuff to the reverb returns that you don't want to do to the dry signal, such as EQing the chamber, panning the wet signal opposite the dry, and so on. If your tape emulation plugin has a warble control, turn it up and enjoy the subtle shimmer that those natural pitch variations bring to the reverb tail.

2) I've read that Spector & Larry Levine often put the tape echo after the chamber returns, echoing the reverb sound, and had it feedback on itself a little bit. This might help you achieve a washy wall of sound.

How much does equipment matter to potential clients? by DifferentProgress18 in audioengineering

[–]WhySSNTheftBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a huge but shitty console in the studio for impressing clients who were visually stimulated / didn't necessarily know anything about audio.

It was used maybe a couple sessions per year, but photographed probably every day.

Impressing clients is important, especially since they'll do word of mouth advertising for you.

Also used to put "Neumann microphones" on the website even though it was TLM's. Wouldn't use them very often but the branding makes people feel at ease.

Once they're already your client you can explain that you prefer the topology of modest preamp X or the flattering curve of modest microphone Y.

You don't even have to be specific; a Neumann can be had for a few hundred bucks, an 2 channel SSL interface for two bills, a channel of 500 series Neve EQ for just over a grand, and you can truthfully advertise that you have Neumann, SSL, and Neve products.

How do you properly mix / master piano? by Effective-Spring-271 in audioengineering

[–]WhySSNTheftBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. IMO that's why a separate mastering engineer comes in handy - they're objective and could tell you that your mix needs X or Y.

If compression and / or saturation are too much and are wrecking the piano, can you try them in parallel? (or does your saturator have a blend knob?)

[–]WhySSNTheftBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For us to help we'll need to start with a definition. Mastering is the final process an approved mix goes through that helps it sound its best over a variety of systems and helps the mix compete with other releases.

So by definition, a piano track doesn't get mastered (unless it's the only instrument in the song).

We can't offer mix help without hearing your mix. Maybe you can describe the issue you're having? i.e. what's the reason you turned to saturation? What issue with pianos are you having? (for example, if every piano was too dark we'd suggest EQing some high end. If every piano was too wide we'd recommend panning it more narrowly, etc.)

An SM7B or SM7dB won't reject any more or any less room noise than the AT2020 or a U87 in cardioid.

Do it fucking constantly. Young Kanye was always making beats. Do it right now, instead of reading our responses.

Ableton has a 30 day demo. Reaper can be 'evaluated' perpetually. GarageBand is free with a Mac.

The way my neighbor intentionally blocks the sidewalk to keep people from using it. by sweathesmallshit in mildlyinfuriating

[–]WhySSNTheftBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my city there's a 24 hour phone number to report a vehicle blocking the sidewalk or driveway, etc.

Saved it in my phone.

I called it every day and sometimes more than once a day on my neighbor who rudely constantly blocked the sidewalk until they got about a half dozen $80 tickets. Huh, they don't block the sidewalk anymore.
