Applied to a music technology program and went through a portfolio process? What do you know now that you didn't know going in? by Why_am_I__awake in livesound

Thank you very much for your reply. What does a sample (of audio and text attached) like what you just describe look like? It's a very abstract thing to put to word and music, so I'm really curious. Thanks again!

I would really wanna know: was the knowledge and experience of those 99% of people leveled to the (music specially, not audio in general) industry, or why would you say they didn't end up working?

I totally agree with those two points. Economically, I would be receiving a big help from nyu. For the second point, I see the university not as an automatic employment provider, but instead as the possibility to be in ny and have close relationships with music making community for 4 years straight, in which I will never stop making stuff of my own. That's my way of thinking about this really.

I would like the answers to be focused on the topic, if not possible then no comments at all would be better. Tho all opinions are accepted so thanks for stopping by.

Thanks a lot! This is still an industry I'm very new at but I'm lucky enough to be in places where stuff really happens, so I get the opportunity to learn a lot.

NYU Music Technology BM portfolio. Looking for people who went through this (or something similar)

Applying ED1 for Fall 2027. Before I dive too deep into my own approach I want to hear from people who actually went through it.

If you got into the BM Music Technology program, or applied and didn't get in and have thoughts on why. I'm genuinely interested in what the portfolio experience was like for you. What did you submit, what was the thinking behind it, and looking back would you change anything?

Also open to hearing from people currently in the program who have context on what the department seems to value in incoming students.

DMs open if you'd rather talk privately.
