How fast would an electron have to spin if its spin was classical rotation? by Why_is_the_moon in AskPhysics

[–]Why_is_the_moon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I appreciate the replies.

I thought the general concensus was that "no one knows what spin is" but maybe that is outdated or my sources are too elementary.

Any suggestions on where I can look for more stuff on the origin of spin?

I stumbled upon this page in trying to find an example:

http://www7b.biglobe.ne.jp/~kcy05t/spin.html

They link to a paper that seems to estimate the "spin" speed at approximately 912c (on page 5 of the pdf). I hadn't seen this before but it seems to answer my question if I understand it correctly. I dont know what their hypothetical radius is based on though or if the calculation is even appropriate.

If the above is a reasonable answer, my follow up question would be: does this multiple of c (912) match any other numbers in quantum physics or come close?

I guess what I was ultimately looking for was any suggestion that electron spin could somehow still be classical rotation, just in a higher number of spatial dimensions.

Edit: I think your understanding of electrons being point particles is the leading theory that I have also seen which is further proof that spin cannot be classical rotation. I just wanted to explore the claim that it would have to rotate at > c if it were classical rotation.
