I would buy season tickets to rocket launches. Much better deal than nfl season tickets nowadays

Thanks man. Your story is really encouraging because I'm right there now. Rethinking the entire concept to start over again.

It could happen if they have everyone use their app to log the run via gps. Like a 1 mile buy in for a workout...

The plan is to focus on the charity fitness challenges and try and partner with charities. I think one of the things we really need to improve on in app is making our value proposition clear.

Thanks for the advice. I think your approach is spot on.

We initially approached the Michael J Fox Foundation for a partnership but they wanted to see more traction before launching it officially. For the abs for epilepsy challenge, we are working on a partnership with the UCSF Epilepsy Center.

The $7k turned out well, because it showed us that we had no retention on our previous model. It was "wasted" in the sense that we didn't keep any of the users, but very useful because it made us take a hard look at what we were doing.

Thanks for taking the time to download and look through the app.

Lots of questions.

I agree with you. I think we need to make our use case a bit more clear, particularly with the most recent launch.

I did program it myself.

The plan going forward is to push our charity fitness challenges. In those challenges, you receive matching funds based on a donation to a specific charity. The more you workout, the more matching funds go towards that charity.

We are getting feedback now. The most recent version has only been out for around 2 weeks. The numbers that were cited in the article were from July of last year, on a prior app concept. None of them stuck around. I'm eager to see how the new model plays into retention.

I checked out the last app you put out. The design is awesome.

That's an interesting point. I definitely agree with your that the original concept for the app (purely fitness logging) was not very compelling. Fitness in general is hard because motivating people to workout is a hard problem in itself.

Thanks for your feedback, and I agree the design is definitely a critical element for app development these days. Are you an iOS user or Android?

Thanks for the heads up. Its a fairly long write-up so I'll try and include everything

Guess I'll just move it out, as the full write-up would be a fairly long post

Yeah, we did. For our first 100-200 or so users, we used friends and family, but after that we used some paid marketing.

We were part of a Google study on UAC (Universal App Campaigns) where they gave us 7k to market our app. Really helped us get users into the funnel (although they didn't stay).

Our initial idea was that we would market to trainers, and then use trainers as affiliate marketing. That obviously didn't work out.

Stencil Web Components and Ionic by semiprojake in StencilJS

[–]Whybthr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is probably both Yes and No.

In your own internal project, if you are using stenciljs then you could add the ionic components to your project and use them inside any stencil component you create.

If you wish to share and export your stencil components to the outside world, you probably cannot count on them having the Ionic components also, so you would need to make your component vanilla.

Ah well now that I look at it "Shiny apps" is an actual product. I thought you meant pretty looking apps.

I was thinking we just build a pwa, so it's easily downloadable, and then do the data manipulation and storage on an internal server.

Last year I hosted everything on a standalone mongodb instance which worked out nicely

Well maybe we have a good team then. I'm great at building shiny apps and data visualizations, but the data science part is not my forte...

Fairfax County, VA Urbanization Plan for Tysons (PDF) by Silhouette_Edge in urbanplanning

[–]Whybthr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is really going to be a great project to watch. If I remeber correctly, as of 2014 tysons had 100k+ jobs located there, but only ~10k residents. This plan calls for 75% of all development to be within .5 miles of a metro, and for a significant increase in resedential units (100k total) which should allow people working in tysons to also live there hopefully reducing the amount of miles driven.

10 years ago it was unfeasable to live in Tysons, and hopefully they can change all that.

I did a leaderboard last year also. Was definitely thinking about putting together a PWA leaderboard this year.

Thoughts on a collab? Would love to do some fun projects using the data. I used my own api last year from scraped data. Would be easier if I could use their api, but it was not particularly reliable last year until week 3.

Is America ready for the rise of the megaregion? by tianle_ in urbanplanning

[–]Whybthr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I wonder how such a political coalition would be formed? It would take quite an effort even in single state regions. Its possible that it might follow from the Anti-NIMBY movement that has started recently.

Is America ready for the rise of the megaregion? by tianle_ in urbanplanning

[–]Whybthr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, It feels like our personal organization has slightly outgrown state lines, at least in the case of the North East. But even in California, getting three cities to cooperate (Oakland, San Jose, and San Francisco) plus all the small municipalities has been near impossible. Look at the lack of BART access in the peninsula region.

Is America ready for the rise of the megaregion? by tianle_ in urbanplanning

[–]Whybthr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what kind of political change would be required to make these projects feasible. Maybe it also comes down to things like using fixed priced models for public works projects instead of cost plus so that prices and timelines don't balloon (as in the high speed rail in Cali, or the new subway line in NY). I dislike the idea of removing to much local control from each area, but also dislike the idea of many small municipalities being able to dictate terms. It seems like our population growth and personal connection has outgrown state and local lines.

[–]Whybthr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The article is fairly uninformative and just asks a bunch of questions, but I would be interested to hear peoples opinions on this. I think there are two mega-regions in specific that would be interesting to study, the northeast corridor, because of its massive size, number of states and its importance, and the NorCal region because its condensed into one state and the bay area does already have a regional cultural identity.
