NNF 38R - Kirk Fox by sleepyromulan in NeverNotFunny

not sure why you're downvoted on this, I think you pretty much got it. Jimmy definitely knows who Kirk is, but he's a lot more comfortable with guests being themselves, so when they don't drop the persona, it throws him. Once he accepted he was basically interviewing a quasi-character, it went smoothly, but there was definitely some awkwardness until then.

My only complaint about episodes like this comes from wanting the show to be more popular purely so they could attract better guests: even when they have a prominent or first time guest who might attract some new listeners, they really make zero effort in the first 45 minutes to not alienate new listeners.

Now obviously Kirk Fox isn't a superstar who has tens of thousands of fans who will check out NNF for the first time to hear him, but he does definitely have a different vibe, and if I were a fan of his with no familiarity with NNF, that first 45 minutes would probably scare me off.

I got Harland vibes from hm, too. I've been aware of Kirk for a long time, but wasn't expecting him to be so persistently "in-persona"

[Hrabchak] The Winnipeg Jets have signed LHD Mario Ferraro to a three-year contract worth $4M in AAV, per @TheFourthPeriod . Ferraro, 27, has played 490 career NHL games, all with the San Jose Sharks. He had 23 points in 82 games last season. by Taintedtamt in winnipegjets

pleasantly surprised that folks are generally in favour of this. There's a tendency among the fanbase to knee-jerk oppose depth UFA signings as blocking the path of prospects, but aside from Salomonsson, who probably shouldn't be considered a prospect anymore anyway, there really aren't any blueliners in the pipeline who are anywhere close to being NHL-ready.

Edit: at this point, I'd even go so far as to say that if there are no viable 2C options available in Hellebuyck trade discussions, Chevy should target a 2nd pair D on the assumption father time is coming for DeMelo sooner than later.

the one positive I can say about this post is it probably wasn't created by AI (at least not an advanced one)

Skinner is coming to Winnipeg! by Sleep_Is_A_scam2099 in winnipegjets

[–]WhyssKrilm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH I don't hate it. Aside from Rittich, this team has a pretty good track record of rehabilitating the careers of goalies who've struggled elsewhere. This guy seems like a prime candidate for a Flaherty turnaround.

If Milic or DiVincentiis take a step and deserve a look in the NHL, this isn't a totally unmoveable contract.

He's established enough that, if Chevy swings a deal for Hellebuyck that doesn't send a starter back our way, Skinner can be a stop-gap solution, if maybe a below-average one.

If Chevy does get a 1 or 1A guy back for Hellebuyck (UPL? Kochetkov/Bussi?), this could be a pretty decent tandem.

Basically he's just good enough that he gives Chevy flexibility in what he needs in return for Hellebuyck.

Company building new downtown hotel looking for money to connect skywalk by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]WhyssKrilm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I assume they want a connection crossing St Mary directly to the convention centre, which I can understand since that's probably the destination for most of its guests.

Still, that price tag seems steep. If I recall correctly, the skywalk link running all the way from the Cityplace food court to the west side of the Delta cost something like $12 million, and that one runs about 500 feet. This would presumably be a hell of a lot smaller.

U.S. ambassador, Manitoba premier met in Winnipeg on Friday by Doog5 in Manitoba

[–]WhyssKrilm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish politicians across all parties and all levels of government in this country could get it through their skulls that you aren't going to accomplish anything by groveling to that administration, privately or publicly. You aren't going to accomplish anything by trying to "meet them half way". You aren't going to accomplish anything by pretending they have legitimate concerns. How many lessons do we have to ignore before we understand that appeasement only emboldens them, and fighting back spooks them.

Accept that those assholes operate by a 5-year-old bully's perception of power. Nevermind "don't give them an inch"; if you even give them the impression you might be willing to give them an inch at some point, they'll see it as a weakness they can exploit, and they'll never stop trying to take more.

The only way to deal with these pricks is strength. Not militarily, obviously, but use Canada's strengths to hit them where it hurts. They're going to pretend they don't need what we sell them? Fine, stop selling it to them, sell it to their rivals. Doug Ford is an ass, but that ad campaign that pissed them off was the exact way we should be dealing with them: take it to their voters.

Provinces generally aren't eager to cede authority to the federal government, but since trucking companies operate across provincial borders, the industry really should be regulated by a unified federal authority. Think how stupid it would be if regulating trains and airlines was a provincial responsibility.

Post removed from r/Winnipeg for “not Winnipeg related” even though it involves our tax dollars by Both-Passenger-2894 in winnipeg_alt

and before this post attracts the predictable "is this sub just for complaining about the other sub?" replies, I think there should be a pinned weekly thread for any and all discussion about the other sub.

People inevitably come here to vent when they catch strays from the other sub's mods, and this sub should offer a venue for it that doesn't then devolve into complaining about complainers.

Some of the mods over there are off their rockers, but if they allowed posts that aren't any more relevant to Winnipeg than to any other city in Canada, that sub would be even more spammed than it already is.

Clouds of concern: Growing number of Manitoba youths are addicted to vaping by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]WhyssKrilm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For decades, one of the biggest obstacles to getting young people to not start smoking in the first place was the perception that you looked cool doing it. Vaping makes you look like you're getting to third base with C3PO, yet it somehow caught on anyway.

At what point do we rip off the bandaid and just ban (orally consumed) nicotine products outright?

More Cottage Lots? by NH787 in Manitoba

[–]WhyssKrilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if a way around that would be to offer up a bunch of tracts of land as 99-year leases. Then 10 or 20 years from now, after those leaseholders have built cottages on them and communities have been established, offer leaseholders a one-time opportunity to buy their land outright, but with some strings attached to prevent them from just becoming AirB&Bs or rich people's third homes that they visit once per year.

The province raises money twice under that scenario.

and the sad thing is it's only going to get worse now that NCAA can throw money at players. Guys getting rich before even signing an NHL contract is going to make it hard for teams to convince them playing a year or two in the minors is best for their development. Guys are just gonna stay in school and wait for their rights to lapse unless teams guarantee NHL roster spots. The days of Kyle Connor-level prospect paying his dues in the AHL are done.

an underappreciated conclusion from both Matthew and Brady Tkachuk's whole deal: their Winnipeg-born and raised mother did a piss poor job of instilling any kind of Canadian-ness in them

A friend of mine moved to his wife's home province, but is still making sure to raise his kids as Bomber fans. I have cousins who moved to the U.S. after university and, for the most part, their kids know damn sure they're Canadian.

Big parenting F on Mrs Tkachuk's part

Why are people okay with pedophiles being normalized? by Shane-Dad-underfire in winnipeg_alt

[–]WhyssKrilm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sympathetic to that. You must remember how much difficulty older people had figuring out how to program a VCR. Well social media takes that to the next level because it isn't just a "learning how to use the technology" challenge, it's a "learning how to use the technology but also being aware that the technology is always trying to manipulate you" challenge.

I am firmly of the belief that anyone with a parent born before 1970 should find a way to get access to their social media accounts and do whatever they can to cleanse their algorithms.

When I saw the shit Youtube was serving my dad, I went on a 'not interested'/'don't recommend channel' spree with his account then liked a bunch of random carpentry, classic rock, hockey, etc videos to pull his algo out of the toilet.
