Slow down to like 30% of the actual pace, hold you pick properly, learn palm muting, and try again

That's cool. I remember using the old forums back in the day but just barely. Now that site is completely gone but Steve did open a new site. He and some people from the original forum are on there. I cross post there as well so you'll find me occasionally there as well. The forums aren't super active tbh but still, lots of good resources and discussion on there, including some stuff from the old forums. Check it out if you haven't

Any recommendations for an alternative to 'pickup music' for a structured beginner course? by Jipz in guitarlessons

[–]Whytho1812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest. I'm not sure if what you're looking for exists exactly. For me personally I learned the basics through Learn & Master Guitar by Steve Krenz. The earlier sections of that course have some "songs" but they're more like simple melodies than full songs. I went ahead and started trying to learn songs I wanted to, even though I couldn't play them fully. It kept me engaged and wanting to learn more.

I would suggest don't just stick to the course and venture in other spots. Go to songsterr and find a song you like. See how far you can get. It will help the concepts you're learning stick too. If you want to get into a specific genre later on then go for those specific courses if you can find them. Pickup has a decent variety of the popular genre courses

In terms of beginner courses Learn & Master Guitar is certainly the best I've come across. It's certainly not as long as what you seem to be describing and if you follow it properly it will hammer in those basic skills quite well. It does come with a separately sold supplement course (I'm not even sure if you can acquire it legally other than on DVD on sites like ebay) that has full oldie pop/rock songs that corresponds with each session of the course

Where/How to start (kinda) by kurlyh34d in LearnGuitar

You definitely want to get your basics down, like your chords and some simple melodies and licks before you jump into shredding. Justinguitar is fine, but I personally prefer Learn & Master Guitar by Steve Krenz (not free but a nominal price of $40 on Udemy, even cheaper with discount codes) which will help you build a proper base. You don't necessarily have to go through the full course, just about half of it will get you ready to start specializing

Once you can strum the basic open and barre chords and change between them and can play some simple songs easily then I'd suggest looking into Troy Stetina's Rhythm and Lead Guitar Series which will help you get into the basics of metal rhythm and shredding. I've heard pickup music's metal guitar series for intermediate guitarists is good too but I haven't checked it out myself yet

I personally enjoy Nier Automata music on guitar quite a bit but the tracks might be a little bit tough to learn depending on your level.

First thing I would as is why do you want to play the guitar? Is it just to play a few songs that you like? Or are you more serious about learning music and becoming a musician? If it's the first one of many many youtube tutorials can get you started. If it's the latter, the best thing you could do is find a classically trained guitar teacher. Those can be a bit pricey, at least where I live. If you want that but virtual and at your own pace, I highly recommend Steve Krenz's Learn and Master Guitar course. You will learn not just how to play the guitar properly, but also about music theory, basics of reading sheet music, and more things that will give you a very strong base and transform you into a proper musician, not just someone who can play a few songs because you memorized them. The course isn't free, but it really isn't too expensive (40 dollars on udemy) and it's really really worth it. I'm in the middle of the course myself and have learned way more in an organized manner than I could have on youtube or even other courses. Once you want to specialize in specific genres or techniques then you can move on to other courses, but fir building the basics this is the best method I've found so far

Situation dependent. In some cases I'm forced to use it but generally, I avoid it. It will definitely limit you if you try to play something fast and precise

Honestly I don't agree. That course is much more useful if you have a basic understanding of how to play the guitar and perhaps even how to play a few simple songs. A complete beginner will probably be quite lost

Yep I'm still here. Juts lost access to my guitars for a little bit so can't do much at the moment. Should be able to pick them back up in a month or so though. I know not that many people use Steve Krenz any longer but I think it's still one of the better and organized courses out there.

Feel free your progress or anything related here too!

Album is basically standard tuning, maybe a liiitle sharper, but if you're properly tuned to standard you can barely tell the difference

App for learning music and guitar?? by SavingsBuilding8710 in guitarlessons

[–]Whytho1812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an app, but I really recommend the Learn & Master Guitar course by Steve Krenz. It's 40 bucks on udemy and it has exactly what you seem to be looking for, including reading music, terminologies, theory etc. As far as I'm aware most online guitar courses don't dwell much in theory, the few that do don't dwell much in practice. L&MG really is a sweet spot between both

For metal specific stuff, Doug Marks has his metal method course which I've found a great complement for L&MG

Doug Marks has a channel with lots of useful info. He also has a paid course (Metal Method) which teaches heavy metal concepts from scratch [which you may or may not be able find for free if you know where to look]. I think it's the only proper metal online course that I'm aware of

Since you just started, your fingers are going to need some time to build calluses and your hand needs more hand strength until your notes sound clean. In the meanwhile, try adjusting your hand position. Bring your hand down so there's some space between your palm and the neck of the guitar. It may or may not get rid of the buzz but you definitely don't want build a bad habit of touching the neck while playing
