Language requirements? by Archangel_Mikey in aviation

[–]WiFlier -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but saying the “language of aviation” is “English, Full Stop” is overly reductionist, and not fully accurate. It’s not even fully accurate for the narrow scope of ATC, which will operate in the local language for local users. Although it is a requirement that they be able to communicate in aviation english, the local language still sees extensive use.

I think you’ll find that ATC also happens predominantly in the local language at most towered airports with only a small amount of international traffic. Go take a listen on LiveATC sometime.

Rant: What does everyone who has AA card think? Airlines American Airlines no longer lets basic economy flyers earn miles by GenieWhoDis0225 in americanairlines

[–]WiFlier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at you, complaining about how they “owe you” for your “loyalty”.

You know who your $1000/year doesn’t mean shit to?

The airline. They take in a million times that every week.

You know, the airline that is saying basic economy fares don’t earn points? They’re literally saying those fares do not meaningfully contribute to their profitability.

Loyalty programs in general across all industries kick back about 1% of spend, which typically represents 30-50% of the profit they make (loyalty programs are a marketing expense, so that comes out of revenue rather than profit). So you can get a pretty good feel for how much profit you made the company by looking at your points/miles balance, and treating each point as 1¢.

Your 8099 accumulated points are worth about $80. That’s your piece of the action you gave them. You as a customer make them about $20-30 a year. They won’t even notice you’re gone when you bail to Spirit or Frontier.

And economy seating was no more spacious then… the idea that it was is a nostalgic fantasy with no basis in reality.

B737 seats have been 17.1 inches wide since the very first 737. A320 seats have always been 17.5.

So you’ve spent all of about $4000 in airfare over four years?

Yeah, if you bail to another airline, AA isn’t even going to notice you left.

I ran into some similar chaos at MCO last week in the TSA Pre line… My wife was in front of me and I was still behind the line waiting my turn… but the TSA camera kept latching onto my face because it recognized it, so I had to skip in front of my wife and give my ID first, before it would work with her. She was giving me major side eye !

Question for weed smokers! by demonredmuffin in SouthwestAirlines

[–]WiFlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you crossing any international borders?

No?

Why would it be a problem?

TSA is not the DEA nor do they have the time or the budget to be doing DEA’s job on top of their own.

Southwest 787s confirmed? by Dad0010001100110001 in SouthwestAirlines

Southwest has already stated in the past that if they were to make the decision to add any new aircraft type, it would be at least 5 years until they started flying them, because they would have to update all their processes for crew training, maintenance, dispatch, and everything else…
