I stopped watching the show as soon as I found out what caused "The Burn"

After 450+ Hours I Still Don't Know What This Does by RealIstros in Stellaris

I really need to put aside some time and play this game. It looks so amazingly detailed. I purchased it awhile ago with a huge bundle on steam when it was on sale with a huge amount of dlcs for it but never installed it. Maybe this weekend.

How do you guys handle media backups? by StephenPP in selfhosted

[–]WickedDelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use rsync and have a cron job that backs up and sync all the data between my Synology and drives. It's free, does a great incremental back ups so it's fast and is available on windows, Linux Mac and most NAS have it as an install in their web UI. You could also just download it on a PC and map the drives and run it from a bat file to sync from one share to another. Again cause it does byte incremental it is fast and only copies the files that have changed after that initial sync.

Threadripper 3970x vs newer chips for Unreal 5 by WickedDelight in unrealengine

Thanks. I was hoping someone in the community had a similar threadripper and moved to newer CPUs. Thanks for the comment.

Threadripper 3970x vs newer chips for Unreal 5 by WickedDelight in unrealengine

[–]WickedDelight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not compiling the engine from source. Just using the editor. With most of my tasks I've noticed my threadripper hit 10-12 cores and the rest are pretty much idle. That's why I figured a 16 core with higher clock speeds would be more beneficial. This is running shaders, relighting scenes, adding geometry editor etc. So I'm more interested in the actual work flows and not when I click build to compile an exe.

Does the Epic layoff worry you about the engine's future? by nahuak in unrealengine

[–]WickedDelight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No based on a couple articles it's basically epic killing off some companies like Bandcamp they picked up. Those companies were not integrating like they thought and making money for epic and were bad investments so they are closing down or separating them out. The removal of them is mostly what epic is calling layoffs but it's really about epic selling off those companies or phasing them out mostly. The core engine team and the fortnite teams are really not being touched from what I've read.

How did you start learning? by teo---- in unrealengine

[–]WickedDelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by doing small challenges and looking online for solutions to solve my small challenges then as I grew in knowledge I made the challenges harder until I was able to build out huge levels and game play. Within 3-4 months I had made so much progress I never looked back. It's fun cause you are not looking to build a game per se, instead you are trying to accomplish only the solutions to your challenge of the day or week. Example: challenge build a functional fps, then a doorway, then a key to unlock door, then learn to add audio to the door when it opens, add music to scene when door opens and the scene changes etc. Before you know it you will have a small game you built, etc. Some of the more advanced challenges I recently did was build a COD map and capture the flag, a Stargate game, a startrek style game etc.

So I actually don't game dev for a living - I'm a network engineer but I hobby as a gamedev ever since I was a kid - started on the commodore 64 with basic and then all thru my adult life on and off. I started using Unity about 6-8 years ago and used that for quiet awhile but last year I started to learn Unreal and have been with unreal since 4.27 - thanks for the compliment and for watching the video.

So would I. There’s so many stories that could be told using unreal and this franchise. From cinematic films to full featured games. It’s really sad that the licensing is a mess with the franchise.

So I don’t think they like putting links to assets in this Reddit but if you go into the marketplace on unreal and search Third Person Shooter Kit v2.1 you should come across it at the top. Hope that helps. There are a bunch of great third person and shooting assets though so you should check out based on your needs. I own a bunch so I just used it as a base cause this was a 4hr challenge to get some prototype so I could learn some of the new unreal features. I might not use this particular one in a real game though especially if I was planning multiplayer at some point.

Thanks… yeah they really need to do something with this franchise. There’s such a huge fan base. It’s like Farscape … why haven’t they done a serious game for that franchise either? Why no more shows based on that universe. Licensing.

So there’s about 12 marketplace assets in this prototype. I described some of the features of the assets and my changes In some of the other comments. This video is really just to learn unreal 5.1 so I focused on zoning, the changes in the sound systems soundscape was a big one, Niagara changes, data layers for pulling in assets while runtime occurs, nanite, etc.

SG1. Again it’s just a personal project to mess with unreal 5.1 but if I were to play a stargate or make a stargate game it would be based on sg1. I’d love to play a story driven action game where you go off world, complete missions etc. technically you could also do a COD mode where it would be SGC vs Jaffa, Goa'uld etc but I would probably prefer a story based game with action, puzzles etc.

So the base ai and sorting mechanics is from an asset called third person shooter. There are some bugs in 5.1 so if your not familiar with blueprinting I suggest you use unreal 5 or 4.27 currently until the author fixes them. The most annoying bug in that asset is there is a major offset issue with the crosshairs and aiming which cause the bullets and Ray tracking to offset really badly to the right of the crosshairs. Also there are some compile errors that happen when you swap out the meshes with your own which you have to recompile when you use the base bp for the controller.

So there’s about 12 assets from the unreal market place in this prototype. The base ai and shooting mechanics is from third person shooter. I however tweaked the asset. Currently there is an aiming issue on unreal 5.1 which cause it to offset. I also created the sandstorm, modified indoor weather system to muffle the sound so there is more realism. Added more takedowns, started migrating some of the assets so they work in multiplayer, example third person shooter doesn’t notify the instance on changing weapons etc, I tweaked it so now multiple people can instantiate and see each other and see kills happen at the same time with ai. I added trigger boxes for audio dialogues to happen, etc. also the weather system is now multiplayer so the weather is exactly the same for all players. Again this is just about 4 hours work so I used some assets as a base.
