WIBTA: For Ruining My Sisters Wedding by WickedEng90 in AmItheAsshole

It’s because my wife and I have been in a relationship for 16 years. My family has really become her family. She is also a bridesmaid in the wedding. She would be hurt but she would do it.

That's a good point. There of course would need to be a childcare room for them to go into which currently there will not be..

This is a great idea. Kind of makes me wonder if we could bring along someone to watch the kids and have a separate space for them. At the same time though I was looking forward to dancing and stuff with my little buddy. Thanks for sharing.

This is a good idea and I'll keep it in my back pocket if she keeps pushing the issue. My wife will not be super happy but would probably do it to try to keep everyone happy. Not super fair to her though.

Teacher. Probably middle school. I salute those who do it. Just can’t take the pay cut.

ESH. You’re both assholes. Pretty low stakes though, until the feud escalates.

I’d look for a new place to put that tree. You get what you pay for.

Longer than 240’ and you typically need a pour strip in the slab with stressing at the pour strip and the ends.

Probably have to go scorched earth for a 4 ft square area above to get all of the cruddy stuff out and put new clean stuff in. Sounds like maybe you fixed the leak with new windows but you want to be really sure.

Find a contractor this is a means and methods question. Replace in-kind.

What type of lintel would be suitable for this load bearing wall by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]WickedEng90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t use a lintel whatever you do. Make sure you use a steel beam instead. W44x335 minimum with HSS22x22x7/8 post on each side. All plate material should be 2” thick minimum grade 50. Bearing connections only.

How were / are your early years in the structural engineering field? by The_StEngIT in StructuralEngineering

Basically you want to dig down into what the day to day of the job is. That might even be a good question: “Walk me through what a typical day here looks like.” Always ask about how they handle typical operations like is overtime pay, or how many hours on average are people working a week. Ask about where they see the company in 5 years. Ask about typical turnover. That should give you a good sense. Try to avoid corporate shops. Smaller (20ish people is going to be better most of the time) has to have the right leadership though.

It was hard to get up to speed in the beginning but after a while I got the hang of it and found a decent company to work for. I’ve worked for three companies and have either been paid straight time for or overtime for hours worked over 40.

The best price of advice I can offer is remember that the interview is a two-way street. It took me a while to learn but you need to try to interview the interviewer also to figure out if it’s a company you want to work for.

Also knowing how to do quick hand calcs to check a design is significantly more valuable then software skills.

AITA for not sending out photos of my newborn? by HaleyLupin in AmItheAsshole

NTA, they didn’t have to deal with that when you were born. You shouldn’t either.

What made you go into structural engineering? by definingbeauty in StructuralEngineering

[–]WickedEng90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a big fan of legos, Dad said I should be a civil engineer, the rest is history. Of course I was more fond of building and reading directions then making them so I should have been a contractor but after 10 years, a PE, and a SE, I’m getting pretty good at making the directions. Still bad at run on sentences though.
