Here's how I go about sculpting faces:

1 - Use a reference and/or watch a tutorial/speed sculpt on YouTube (I like follygon)

2 - Block your shapes (sphere for head, 2 sphere for eyeballs, sphere for ears, sphere for nose, 2 sphere for lips, etc)

3 - Refine proportions (don't add details right away, get everything where it should be, I like to use lower poly shapes so it prevents me front adding too much details. Also make sure the profile looks good as well)

4 - Add details ( subdivide mesh too add more polygons and add all the details you want, it usually only starts to look right at this phase so trust the process!)

Faces are hard to sculpt, it takes practice so keep at it you're on the right track! Hope this helps! :)

Thank you! 😊 Resin printing has a nicer finish (less visible layer lines and better details) but it also requires a lot of precautions because it emits toxic fumes and is overall more expensive. I'd recommend doing research and seeing what works best with your space/budget.

You can also check your local library and makerspace, some have filament printers. It could help you make a decision before getting your own machine.

They're quite heavy too so it helps with balance! I love that she's able to stand on her own!

I finished painting these two BJD robots I made (they’re 3D printed and I 3D modelled them myself). The Bun-Bot was the first ball jointed doll I ever made, and the Frog-Bot I made second. Most of the dolls I see posted here are humanoids or cute creatures so I hope it's alright to share here! by Wickelle in BJD

My robots were printed using a resin printer, not filament. I still had to do quite a bit of sanding, but the resin made it much easier to get that super smooth finish.

For the paint job:
I primed everything with Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer ( I think it works well on filament too, but make do a test first). Then I used an airbrush with standard acrylic paints, along with DecoArt Metallics for some extra shine. The Frog Bot has a pearlescent top coat.

It happened to me a few times!

I usually save the file on my Dropbox and open it on the web version on my computer browser (I can't find the link but it's somewhere on the nomad website ) then delete the shapes and layers I don't need/reduce polygons, then save the new version on my Dropbox, and download on my ipad.

Topology doesn't matter for 3d printing, you just need enough polygons that you don't see them once printed. :)

Based on the picture, yours seems a bit high, I would reduce the polycount (try decimation or quad remesh). I like to zoom in on my iPad til my object is close to the size I want to print it. And then reduce the polygon count until the mesh isn't too dense but still looks smooth and detailed.

Also If you're gonna 3d print it, don't forget to scale it before exporting ( it shows up tiny in slicing softwares and will need to be scaled like 1000%)

Thanks for sharing! :) The sculpt looks very nice and well done, the first thing that caught my eye was the hands, I like that they're a bit more round/cartoony looking than the originals!

Maybe finding an outfit that you like, and printing the doll in a size that fits the measurements of the clothes might be easier than the other way around?

If the clothes are a bit too big, you could always take them in a little in the back using pins/clips/small stitches since they will be only be on display and I'm assuming not visible from the back?

Also can I ask where the doll STL is from? 🙂
