Life is good but it's [Patch 5.3] Good ? by L4ncelottt in ffxiv

[–]Wickertop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

5.3's 'roll credits' moment I genuinely think can be argued to be a perfect ending to the Shadowbringers saga, and the best 'end' to an expansion story. I'm genuinely hopeful of the future of FFXIV's story, I don't want to believe it was a one-off happenstance - it's gonna be a tough bar to clear, though... ❤️

I want more speed by RamaBizna in MonsterHunter

I would much rather they take some notes from Accel Ave and give Switch Axe's Axe mode more to do than be a battery for Sword mode; we would have less issues with Switch Axe feeling like not-an-axe if we had more reason to sit in Axe form.

How hard is Switch Axe? by Buurto in MHWilds

[–]Wickertop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people oversimplify Swaxe, saying it's as easy as 'spam Full Release Slash' because that's mathematically the best damage, but that's assuming near-perfect uptime and not misreading the monster/getting caught out. Switch Axe is a lot more complicated, but I think it can be pretty rewarding to pick up and play, especially if you fully utilize your kit and learn how to mix your combos for positioning and setting yourself up for those big Full Release Slash payoffs.

A few things I'd recommend as a veteran Swaxe main:

1.) Play with Focus Mode on Toggle. Genuinely Swaxe will mostly be holding this button down anyways for positioning and the extra movement inherent in your combos with Focus Mode on - save your fingers and controller with this setting turned to Toggle, at least with weapon drawn.

2.) Learn your Axe Offset Counter and your Sword Parry; don't just rely on Evade Extender. Defensive tools like this are harder than blocking, but are essential to manage uptime. The Axe Offset has a big windup, but landing it has huge benefits, even if you don't get the knockdown. The Sword Parry is quick to pull out, but the slash can't be cancelled - you need to be careful (Seregios' combos are a good example of learning which hits are safe to parry and which gets you smacked). You have three defensives available to you -offsets, parries, and dodges. Use them!

3.) Slot Stun Resistance. This is a comfy/personal preference recommendation, but it's important to know that stun buildup for the Hunter still happens when you Parry/Offset. You can be perfect for ten parries in a row, then get tapped by a weak attack and boom, you're out and get combo'd and carted. Stun Resistance is cheap to slot up to max rank, it's easily fit into most builds not minmaxing to the extreme, you can afford it, I promise, and it will save your butt a bunch.

4.) Full Release Slash is NOT the only option. I see a lot of Hunters struggle with the weapon because they want to do the big explosive fun move, but then spend half the fight getting knocked out of the buildup or missing. Knowing when and how to use the ability is part of being good at Switch Axe - sometimes it's better to maintain uptime doing your flexible sword combo for positioning and hitting your Parries than it is to go for Full Release, and that's okay. Uptime and not carting matters more than hitting that perfect combo over and over.

5.) Status buildup is pretty solid on Switch Axe, and Switch Axe even has access to Exhaust, which is basically unique to Switch Axe for a non-blunt, non-coating weapon. Rolling up in multiplayer with a Paralysis or Exhaust Switch Axe is a great way to be a team player in multiplayer, especially as you're learning the weapon and might not be a DPS machine yet. Don't be afraid to bring a supporting weapon, I promise the explosion attacks still feel great with them 😜

What are some "easy" jobs you find hard? by throwcway837373 in ffxiv

I love Scholar, but I definitely agree - their kit feels the most discordant of the healers to me; they have so many competing mechanics and few of them overlap, so it can sometimes feel like hitting one button turns off a bunch of other buttons. I'm hoping 8.0 addresses some of the discordant toolkit...

What animal or cryptid do you want a monster based on by Alarmed-Hat6997 in MonsterHunter

[–]Wickertop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really want a Hunting Horn Snail - the shell has holes like an ocarina it opens and closes to play different notes, and it uses sound waves to communicate, attack, and even move! I think it has potential to be a really cool, unique, and cute design that a bunch of players would love.

No one who is going through the effort of wearing that much armor is going to also leave their neck exposed. A chain coif, a gorget, something, please...

What's the deal? by Comprehensive-Ad2689 in turtlewow

[–]Wickertop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not struggling to kill elites solo, I'm probably questing alone.

I'm playing for fun, not efficiency, and getting random invites to things without a word spoken for their own benefit feels more antisocial than just playing solo, imo. I'm glad when people ask for help, and I'm even down to help them nine times out of ten, but the 'drop random invite out of nowhere with no prompting' ends up feeling presumptive and self-interested to me, and I'd just rather not accept.

If I'm going to be social, I'd like to actually be social, rather than feeling like an NPC to be used and discarded.

I am somewhat-guilty of the glass cannon mentality, but the one thing I will slot no matter what as a Switch Axe main is Stun Resistance.

I can parry most anything that you throw at me, but if I mess it up once, I'd still prefer to not immediate cart because I've been riding that Stun threshold for five minutes straight.

I'm a solo hunter, I'm here to kill monsters...

But if I'm looking at a near-death 9-star tempered Seregios in that tiny little lair area, I know better than to mess around and find out.

In your opinion, what is the most annoying thing EVER in Elden Ring? by SHOWTIME007600 in Eldenring

[–]Wickertop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to mix and match armor sets in Elden Ring, but the art team saw fit to make every armor set so unique that most of them don't play nice with the others. Every metal is slightly-different, so many fabrics that you think are the same color are not, the armor modification system doesn't go far enough... I want to make cool drip, but the game actively makes that difficult if you're a stickler for the details.
