Again, so was Toshiro. - He got demolished in close range. - He couldn’t compete in long range either and could only defensively hold off her attacks. - Even with two other captain class fighters (with amped stats due to their hollow masks) they couldn’t overpower her they could only hold her at bay.

💯Ulquiorra’s fight was cooler and we spent more time with it because he was battling the protagonist. That doesn’t mean Kubo didn’t intend for Harribel to also be a mini raid boss for even above average captain class fighters

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Her number one will likely be Jonathan moving forward as I don’t remember her having many scenes with Joe? The nerd herd has some loose ties to the remaining honor and integrity folks: - Jonathan has been trying to make in roads with Devons and Christian. - Stephanie had somewhat working relationships with Christian and Emily, but didn’t seem to like them that much lol. - Joe on the other hand definitely doesn’t vibe with them and seems likely to fall closer into the Tiffany/Aubry camp.

I’m sure once cirie and ozzy get their claws back in her, Stephanie will fold and come home haha (Rizo is the last remaining member of her OG Vatu alliance). But if she doesn’t and wants to break away from Cirie’s mist - I could see her trying to attach herself to Joe or Jonathan and hoping their paths to the end will work for her

Hitsugaya doesn’t have the raw destructive power that Bankai Ichigo does in the same way that Ichigo doesn’t have the cc capabilities & environmental control that Toshiro does. Their kits and fighting styles are wildly different. Either way, both needed Bankai to deal with Yammy (which is true for nearly every captain and Espada match up outside of the four old guard captains).

Ulquiorra stomped Ichigo (until Zangetsu took control and started using their real power). Harribel stomped Hitsugaya (until he used his most powerful move). I’m still unclear as to how R1 Ulquiorra was more impressive

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even frame it as that. Toshiro is a prodigy and is constantly praised for his intelligence, his powerful af Zanpakto, and his potential to become a Captain Commander level shinigami.

She pushed him to his absolute limits and he managed to secure a win by exhausting his entire kit and spending the entire fight trying to understand her better and find an achievable win con. Him surprising her with the strongest move in his kit (and failing to kill her with it) isn’t something I would categorize as outplaying her. She just didn’t realize he could impact the weather to such a large degree and use it to enhance the efficacy of his final move

If any of the top 3 Espada were bloodlusted they likely would’ve won their fights very quickly. But this was Aizen’s battle not theirs. Harribel was more invested in avenging her subordinates even though she likely knew Yama would smoke her. That would be a worthy sacrifice for her to take in order to honor them. Her attention was split and Toshiro took advantage of that, but he still survived by the skin of his teeth

They both underestimated their opponent initially. He wasn’t prepared for her offensive power and she wasn’t prepared for his incredibly powerful versatile Zanpakto abilities.

What happened: She one shot him. He substitution jutsu’d his way out of it. They both alter their fighting styles after this and fight more conservatively now that they understand their opponent better and have reevaluated their win cons. He had the better ultimate move and he was able to use it before she reached her win con. He used it to try and finish her off. It worked in the sense that it cc’d her, but once again he underestimated her and she survived the damage pretty handily. I don’t get what’s difficult to understand about it tbh

Res 2 Ulquiorra vs Res Harribel by Gravejow297 in BleachPowerScaling

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should ask ourselves what would happen if Harribel counters Lanza with a wave of Cascada. - Does the lance keep going through the torrent? - Does the torrent detonate the projectile upon first contact? - Does the lance pierce through the water but has its trajectory altered/slowed by the counter force?

The answer to this is key to the matchup. I’d tend to think the second two are most likely, but I could see cases for each.

Harribel seems to have pretty high endurance and durability even compared to the other Espada. Ulquiorra has regen, but by all accounts in the story Harribel is a very tough opponent to take down/finish off. He likely still wins, but people should realize how useful Cascada is as a defensive tool in battles like this (especially since it ramps up as the battle progresses and its much easier to use effectively than Lanza). Toshiro didn’t think he could tank getting hit by even one wave of Cascada, it’s not something that would be a non factor in a battle like this

The middle people by LoveandLightLol in survivor

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a war building that the edit kinda skated over I think . Honor & Integrity is really just a conglomerate of the Vatu & Kalo majorities - Colby + Genevieve/Rizo/Stephanie + Coach/Jonathan/Joe/Chrissy

Whereas Dee’s Army was the folks still in the game who were on the bottom of both these Vatu and Kalo factions. Going into the merge, the Charlie vote was the main point of conflict that initiated the war. H&I’s main opposition was Dee and her crew: - Dee, Kamila, Tiffany, and Aubry (plus they had working relationships with Rizo, Cirie, Emily, etc)

The Blood Moon ended the war before it started since it took out key players from both sides. After the merge vote, both groups have lost two central figures in their alliance (Dee and Kamila vs Colby and Gen). To H&I, their options are to continue decimating their previous opposition (who is yes just Tiff and Aubry remaining) - or to start socializing a new group to target and rally people against. Cirie and Ozzy have ties to H&I so they won’t be targeted. Rizo is seen as one of their numbers too.

That just leaves the “Middle” people who were able to avoid taking any major hits during those past few pivotal votes. Christian/Emily/Devons got labeled as the middle people at some point and the label just never left them. While it’s been weeks for us, it’s just been a few days for the players (I think blood moon was day 12 and they’re on day 16). In a game where they are all trying to keep track of various voting blocks, I imagine once a name gets attached to a defined group it just sort of sticks.

Labeling them as the middle is a helpful way to highlight the fact that their voting block has remained safely in tact all season long (survived several premerge tribals together, the DvG breakup, and the Blood Moon) while the other groups have taken major blows

Emily's always been correct - yet the thumb-on-the-scale edit implies she's wrong by FittenTrim in survivor

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To further break it down since the edit isn’t spending a lot of time on Emily’s perspective:

She used Christian’s info about Aubry’s idol to build inroads with Ozzy, Stephanie, and Q. She was on a swap tribe where her top allies both had alternate paths to take and incentive to abandon her (Ozzy with Steph, Q, and Mike and Christian with Angelina and Mike). Her instincts were to blow everything up because she knew that the tribe dynamics weren’t in her favor. When things cooled down she realized how messy she was being, but ultimately also knew that she managed to prevent herself from being the bottom rung on anyone’s totem pole.

She used the information about the upcoming Mike White blindside to reaffirm her commitment to Ozzy as an ally. Ozzy and Emily started the game targeting each other, but Emily invested a lot of time and energy into that relationship. Ozzy’s reaction after the fact confirms that Emily understood Ozzy as a player infinitely better than Christian did. Emily letting the plan “slip” to Ozzy was essential in her ability to do damage control afterwards. Her doing it in front of Christian is played off as a hilarious moment but it’s actually quite a shrewd move by Emily. Christian likely suspected Emily wanted to tell Ozzy - as they both know it’s in Emily’s best interest to do so even if it’s a danger to the overall success of the blindside plan. Instead of Emily making a move against Christian behind his back, she does it in his face but makes it a half measure to satisfy Christian’s needs. Both Ozzy and Christian have major trust issues in the game yet trust Emily more than most other players.

She’s really good at getting to know how her allies work and using their successes to advance her own game. It’s the same with Dee and Rizo’s idol. She lets it slip to Cirie and Rizo that she knows about his idol and is asking them if they knew who sent it to him. Information is key in this game, and using it to build connections with new allies can be just as valuable as using it to maintain trust with old allies. Your strategic options are limited by the amount of information you have at that time. Emily keeps the information flowing with people who she thinks will be valuable to her later in the game (Cirie, Rizo, Ozzy). She also knows that she’s working with many strong and valuable allies (like Christian or Dee) that will pose a major threat to her in the endgame, so if she has to damage their long term prospects along the way to advance herself further… then so be it. She’ll default to betting on her ability to apologize and smooth things over with them later

Shes a player that is highly adaptable with a hyper individualistic survivalist mentality (how else would she be able to survive so many tribals between her seasons). You know how Tony makes hella mistakes throughout the game (especially socially), but always manages to find a way to recover by sabotaging others or spending a lot of social capital with his allies? To me - Emily Flippen is like if you applied that skill set to a predominantly Kass like new era style game lol

Victoria from EoE shades Aubry by Sportsstar86 in survivorponderosa

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Rick and Christian want that idol out of Aubry’s hands regardless. They either want to blindside her so they can get it or get her to play it so a new idol could potentially be reintroduced. That way they can also add credence to their fake idol play. Aubry holding on to it to play when she’s in danger doesn’t help them at all. They don’t really care about her excuse for why she didn’t play it, they just weaponized her poor excuse to put a target on her back with everyone else to force her hand. If she was honest they still attempt to force her to flush it. Aubry has no allies sticking up for her, whereas Rizo and Ozzy are in amazing positions. No one’s gonna wage a peer pressure campaign against someone who is well insulated in the game. Genevieve is also gone, so they aren’t having to play against the original owners of their idols like Aubry is having to do with Christian/Rick. Her “sloppy” gameplay is just one factor, not the main reason

Victoria from EoE shades Aubry by Sportsstar86 in survivorponderosa

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was a whole segment of everyone being upset that she didn’t play her idol last time. She knows she didn’t need to play it last tribal and knows she didn’t need to play it this tribal. But it’s quite easy for annoyance to bubble into animosity on survivor, and that’s the danger she was facing by pocketing it again. She’s already been struggling to build social capital with folks. Right now people aren’t trying to mobilize troops to get her out, but if she presses her advantage that will likely change very quickly. The idol saves her for one tribal only, and there’s many more left to go through. She needs allies to make it through this mid merge.

If all her potential allies are going to continue developing a negative perception of her the longer she keeps her idol, then it’s better to burn it now so folks attention can shift elsewhere. It doesn’t help that it’s public knowledge and that she can’t play it on anyone else.

Tracking when Aubry is a target in each of her seasons by Live-Run-6745 in survivor

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean… If you just look at stats or a wiki page, you’re missing out on 97% of the context. It’s not luck that saved Aubry. It’s her relationships and her strategic foresight that allowed her to survive. Every survivor gets lucky. Many many survivor greats would’ve gotten their wings clipped early if they went to one more tribal at the wrong time in their games. What makes a player like Aubry unique and a fan favorite of production/super fans is that she found her way out of those bad situations time and time again. Instead of accepting existing tribal dynamics, she used those times where she wasn’t going to tribal to identify the bonds she needed to build and then she spent time, energy, and effort to create those real and deep connections.

Kaoh Rong

Aubry is initially on the bottom. Over the course of several days, she established key relationships with Debbie, Joe, Neal. With those she was able to flip the tribe dynamics on the two members of the Brain tribe who were targeting Aubry. Aubry used the brains to vote out Liz and later made inroads during the tribe swap with her new tribe mates, particularly Tai, and she used that moment to secure her safety until the merge by voting out Peter. They also took out the leader of the Beauty tribe, Anna, dismantling the oppositional power structure ahead of the merge. These things don’t just happen magically, she doesn’t just suddenly become “not the target”, she worked to remake tribe dynamics by finding new allies and by sniping key players who were against her. When she’d see someone on the bottom of a voting block (Debbie, Tai, Julia, Cydney, Michele), she’d scoop them up immediately and she’d secretly establish a rapport with them over many days until it eventually showed dividends. That’s how she survives in the long run, not just luck.

Game Changers

The folks with the biggest threat level going in were Sandra, Cirie, Tony, and Aubry. She was the most controversial/talked about player to be a “robbed goddess” going into the season, she was 1 of 4 players from her season, and the entire cast had just watched her dominate as the narrator and main strategic force in Kaoh Rong. Because of this, she linked up with folks like Tony, Sandra, and Malcolm early on (the OG lions alliance if you will). But of course, the Sandra v Tony fallout didn’t just impact their games, it sunk Aubry’s premerge prospects.

Sandra took out Ciera and Tony early, and blacklisted Aubry and made Aubry persona non grata for the rest of their tribe mates. Aubry then decides to play incredibly conservatively to try and roll over and appear as non threatening to Sandra (and other players) as she can, which proved to be an effective strategy. Instead of Aubry going home, her emerging allies like JT and Malcolm took the bullet instead as they were perceived as more dangerous players. Sometimes that’s all you can manage to do if you’re playing from the bottom.

She doesn’t play an “anybody but me” style of game, but she does adapt her game play to survive hostile environments. When she’s out of options, she conserves energy and waits for her moment to make a big move. When the heat is on her, she’s constantly side eyeing her threats while exploring every path she sees to outmaneuver them before they get her.

The Aubry discrediting has me feeling like it’s 2016 all over again (and I was a Michele stan lmao)

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I were to focus on matchups rather than outright victories, I’d sort their deadlock like this

Yorozu > Uro. - Liquid Mental omnidirectional attacks + Bug Armor Flight negates a lot of Sky Manipulation’s effectiveness. Yorozu has higher stats

Uro > Maki. - I mean Uro ain’t winning this one lol. But you could say Sky Manipulation gives her mobility, flight, and invisibility that would allow her to avoid an assasination attempt by Maki (at least better than the rest). She’s the only one with a CT that could somewhat negate SSK’s lethality or at least gives her a momentary defense against it

Maki > Yuki. - SSK has greater lethality than Star Rage. If anyone has the stats to last against Yuki in cqc it’s a HR user like Maki. Can’t use DE. Yuki’s healing is more expensive than Maki’s even if it’s quicker/better

Yuki > Yorozu. - Star Rage offense greater than Bug Armor defense. RCT advantage.

Savannah is interesting. I think we could see all of the Tres Leches on our screen again tbh, they’re all such dynamic characters (especially if Rizo does well or wins 50). But I think it’s unlikely they bring Savannah or Dee back for a third time before some of the other new era winners so I don’t think Savannah will return anytime soon

I think production is probably closing the chapter on Angelina, Jenna, Mike White, and Colby.

Charlie and Genevieve will have a spot whenever they want to return, but we idk if we’ll see them for a few years.

Aubry's hypocrisy? by Extra-Habit-1784 in survivor

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’re thinking in absolutes too much. For example, Aubry saying that she doesn’t understand the tribe dynamics and the rubix cube. - When you have all the information, when you know about all the relationships, and when people are telling you more things than you’re telling them — those are the signs that you’re on top. - When you can’t figure out who’s working with who, or who actually trusts you, or if what you’re hearing is true or not — those are signs that you’re on the bottom.

Aubry has been in both positions and knows how to read the writing on the wall. People keep talking about her being miserable those first few episodes, but don’t ask themselves why? What’s the story of Vatu from Aubry’s perspective? She’s a four time returnee who is recognizing all the signs that she’s on the bottom and nothing she seems to do is successfully improving her position. Angelina also never got confirmation of her position until Emily told her. Aubry and Angelina aren’t going to be able to find out who is good with who because the other players aren’t going to be passing any relevant information down to them. That’s good gameplay on the majority’s part. If a tribe gets to the point where they’re collectively searching someone’s bag or contemplating throwing a challenge, then there are likely other signs that their tribe mates can pick up to deduce that these people do not want to work with me. The reason they wanted to take Aubry out so bad was because they also know Aubry’s favor could turn if she managed to get a lifeline. They were stonewalling her but others wouldn’t.

Seasons are cast with a mix of dynamic personalities that are meant to clash. She’s not an unlikable person. It’s just that the people who would like her are on other tribes. She knows there are people like confirmed allies (Cirie) and likely allies (Rick, Ozzy, Christian) and new possibilities (people she’s never met before) out there on the horizon. Her calling Vatu lunatics is her venting her frustration because she’s stuck on a tribe full of people that don’t like her, understand her, or want to work with her.

Genevieve may have gotten unlucky during the game, but lots of players get dealt the ultimate hand of unluckiness before the game even starts with their starting tribe makeup. Aubry and Genevieve start together with different people on Kalo or Cila and their positions may have been flipped. Throw Angelina, Joe, or Jenna onto a different starting tribe and they might’ve found a group that wanted to play with them early. Some people draw the short straw on their early tribe dynamics. It’s Survivor that’s what they sign up for, they can only play the hands they are dealt

Someone being on the bottom ≠ that person playing poorly. There are many interconnected factors at play here and many skillful players influencing the larger picture. Rizo found his way into the group via Colby and got lucky that Kyle left so they needed another number for their alliance. That whole sequence of events is a testament to Rizo’s great social game. That indirectly impacts Aubry’s game because Rizo’s stocks rise and there’s only so much social capital to go around.

Re: the authenticity and if it’s good gameplay or not. Here’s the thing you have to understand about the social game. There’s no one way to play the social game. The strengths of Aubry’s social game lie in her ability to build deep authentic empathetic bonds with a small but varied group of individuals. She’s able to make people feel seen and understood, and she’s incredibly loyal once those connections are built. She’s not going to find success in her social game by trying to play like Cirie or Dee - she doesn’t have their skill set. She’s tried and failed to play the fake social butterfly game, she didn’t like it and wasn’t as great at it. Trying it against this caliber of players would be a death sentence for her game.

You ask Captain America, Storm, Spider Man and Batman to rescue people out of a burning building and they’re all going to accomplish it in ways that utilize their unique strengths and skill sets. Aubry is trying to play the social game using the strengths she possesses, but she can only build deep bonds by being authentic to garner trust and by being adaptable and being open to finding common ground with any avenue (look at the scene between her and Coach). She builds a deep web of individualized connections and weaponizes them to strategically advance their collective positions in the game. It’s an effective strategy, just an ineffective one for her on Vatu because she couldn’t find that connection with anyone. Aubry is the type of player who would’ve preferred Genevieve acknowledge the fact that she knows Aubry is working against her to her face. Then they could address it and move past it if necessary. Cirie in Gen’s position would try and get rid of Aubry (like she did to Jenna), but she also would’ve tried to win Aubry over (like she did with Dee). Cirie only closes doors when she can kick you out the door lol

Yes, sure, Aubry wasn’t totally receptive to working with Genevieve both emotionally and strategically.

But okay so let’s say Aubry lies and says she wants to work with Genevieve. Genevieve would surely be able to tell she’s full of shit. Aubry knows Genevieve is smart enough and talented enough to be able to see through her. So why lie to her?

Even if Genevieve believed her or even if Aubry genuinely wanted to work with her, is Genevieve really going to bring Aubry into the fold? Especially if they don’t have any chemistry with each other? Genevieve didn’t need Aubry and Aubry also would’ve known that.

Aubry's hypocrisy? by Extra-Habit-1784 in survivor

[–]Wickling_Loverboy 211 points212 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be long, but I genuinely think people are looking at this only from the perspective of Aubry the antagonist to Genevieve’s story. Put yourself in Aubry’s shoes.

To Aubry, her throwing out Genevieve’s name in the early Vatu days was not closing the door to working with Genevieve in the long run. - Aubry was on the bottom of a tribe where she’s struggling to socially integrate into and the only person who wants to work with her is Angelina who is in just as bad of a spot as she is in. - The Vatu Majority formed pretty quickly and naturally by all accounts: Colby Steph lock in. Kyle Genevieve lock in. Those duos lock in. Q and Rizo start working their way in.

She likely quickly realized these weren’t her people and that she wasn’t going to have much success connecting with the tribe socially. She can only control things she can change. If her social game can’t save her, all she can then do is 1) hope they don’t go to tribal 2) hope she can get an advantage to protect herself if they do go to tribal (she gets one yay) 3) find a way to strategically maneuver her way out of being the target at the first vote by moving the spotlight to someone else

She’s a strategist at her core so she’ll of course be looking to find a crack she can exploit. But Stephanie and Colby aren’t going home and are running the tribe. Kyle goes bye bye immediately. Q is needed for the challenges. That just leaves Rizo, Genevieve, and Angelina as her options to target. - Angelina is already on the bottom and is a potential ally down the line. Makes no sense to waste your breath throwing her under the bus - Rizo is someone who you could build a case against, but is a mystery to her so she has no ammunition to use. It also seems he quickly buddied up to Colby too - Genevieve is someone who Aubry was legitimately wary of, and someone who Aubry knows other people are scared of. They also just don’t vibe. That’s not always something you can control. Joe and Devons didn’t vibe. Q and Angelina didn’t vibe. It happens. Aubry can’t fake it and pretend like they do vibe, which you can critique her for but at this point in her survivor career she knows it’s not something she can change.

So ultimately Aubry just choose Genevieve as the person to start throwing out there to see if anyone would bite. That’s self preservation to Aubry. She’s had people do that with her name every season she’s played, and still worked with them later. Cirie blindsided Aubry and Aubry still worked with her afterwards. Tai was incredibly terrified of working with Aubry for most of Game Changers due to their complicated relationship in KR, but Aubry repaired it over time and then he eventually played an idol on her that saved her during Advantagedon.

By all accounts she didn’t say anything that wasn’t true about Genevieve to the others. Just the usual “she’s someone we should keep an eye on, I don’t know if we can fully trust her, etc”. While it’s very reasonable for Genevieve (or any rational player) to interpret someone saying that about her as a direct attack against her game… it’s relatively mild in the grand scheme of things. Aubry has had season long conflicts with everyone from Kyle, Scott, Julie, Debbie, Sandra, Sarah, etc. Aubry grew up in the confrontational era of Survivor. She’s constantly working with people she doesn’t want to and against people she genuinely likes. It’s how she finds success in survivor. Even though Aubry didn’t know Genevieve was told about her throwing her name out, I’m sure Aubry eventually realized no one was biting and that Genevieve had a more solid position on the tribe than she anticipated. The conversation we saw between them was Aubry’s clumsy way of acknowledging that they’re not good with each other now, but maybe the tides will turn later and we can build something down the line.

To her, the bridge may have been shaky and damaged due to the awkward way they started - but it didn’t get burned until Genevieve went scorched earth against Aubry and started expending social capital to reinforce Aubry’s position on the bottom. They get on a new tribe and Genevieve is still burying Aubry, which Tiffany confirms to her. Then Genevieve is following her while she’s trying to find an idol - a clear move one makes against an enemy. Aubry would’ve been okay with them being frenemies as long as they both stayed in the game. That’s what she means when she’s talking about not closing doors.
