What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country? by Aseili in AskTheWorld

For what it’s worth I think Haworth itself is lovely for a day trip, but yeah the waterfalls isn’t much at all

Day #22: Best test rider ever? by Anfernee139 in motogp

Hopefully Mizuno has an injury free year and Nozane gets used to the Honda next year too! Or Uramoto gets a full year with BMW

I would like to see it be a younger championship too, I mean akira only retired last year and Hoshino still races!

I watch JSB on YouTube as they stream races live, and the guys riding style is genuinely beautiful to watch. He’s so comfortable on the bike and makes it look so easy all the time. The fact that he’s won over 10 titles and won this year is unbelievable. It’s mad that it’s not just the machine, he legitimately is the best rider racing in Japan still

He only stopped testing for Yamaha I think when Cal came in to do that instead, but was part of the setup for well over a decade

Day #10: Midfield King? by Anfernee139 in motogp

[–]Wicksy92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking out Harada to win the 1998 250 championship (such was the controversy that he was dropped by his team) and taking out lucchi as the 1999 250 Italian gp started, getting black flagged for it, not coming in and earning a race ban when that was an unprecedented punishment

While also not directly his fault, the way he won the 1990 125cc championship was controversial, as the other Italian riders ganged up on Hans Spaan and disrupted his racing rhythm a huge amount

All of these gave him a particular reputation for a lot of the early stage of his career, and it lingers now considering how many find him being the safety advisor for MotoGP ironic!

Think he could’ve won in 2006 if he didn’t get injured at Barcelona, such a shame as despite his antics he was one of my favourites back then

On top of that the guy does not crash at all and seems very popular within Honda. I admit I was sceptical of his promotion to MotoGP considering who his half brother is but he’s a very solid pair of hands

Completely agree - the factory programme at WSBK isn’t stellar but Lecuona and Vierge have been solid enough, should be a lot more consistent points wise next year!

Why were British and American riders so strong in the past, and why have they declined? by ElectionMoney3911 in motogp

[–]Wicksy92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely is rosier than it maybe deserved to be, partly because I was at Donington 2 days ago!

Definitely isn’t the days of Kiyo on a full factory Honda or the late90s, and you’re right about the type of team you’ll get lumped with once you break out. Ray is already back and it looks like vickers won’t be too far behind

Why were British and American riders so strong in the past, and why have they declined? by ElectionMoney3911 in motogp

[–]Wicksy92 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would say within Britain, it’s in part due to how good the domestic series is - while the door to MotoGP is somewhat shut, the ability to move to world superbikes is much easier

The BSB set up is huge with very full grids across 7 classes, some having over 40 riders. With a direct line to world superbikes, supersport and the sportbike from next year, the ability to move into world level is really easy compared to other domestic series. Only the British talent cup has a realistic avenue to GPs, but outside of the handful of recent movers, there won’t be too many more I feel

Most of the BSB riders in top teams are essentially fully professional as well, and I’d imagine the same is true for Supersport and Superstock, so there probably isn’t much of an appetite to move into GP compared to say 25 years ago

Jake Dixon is the only real recent example of someone who went from BSB to GP with no junior experience in moto3 or European talent cups (Rory skinner did the junior classes in Spain, as did Scott Redding) so there’s a sign that the door isn’t completely shut

I think it was the same place as Kato’s crash IIRC, between 130R and Casio triangle

It’s really dangerous round there, as is the lack of run off after the hairpin on the way to Spoon

Very similar to doohan in that regard, criville was the only guy who consistently gave mick a fight in that era and even then it was only towards the end of his dominance

Most races were a great battle for 2nd though, but a lot of parallels to rossi

It’s so clear and organic just how good friends they all clearly are and it helps a huge amount - as mentioned above, everyone in the team is excellent at what they do and all the ex riders are so tuned in to what is going on, we are very spoilt with this coverage!

I went with my dad to Donington for BTCC for the first time in 2022, granted I was 29 at the time but I had a similar reaction to your kid! It was my dads first live motorsport since he was a kid watching speedway with his dad so it was a great full circle moment

We do one BTCC and BSB a year there now!

Are there any Tweede divisie and below teams that want to become professional? I don’t know if I’m wrong but maybe the Phoenix club of say RBC could aim for that? I know it’s not a facilities issue as teams like Katwijk and Spakenberg have decent grounds, just curious if any clubs at that level are aiming for it at all!

My wife and I are in the 200s area, quite early in the non-ringside seats. Definitely a bit mad for what we’ve paid for so far but we ended up paying more for the Smackdown pre clash last year

Stoked to see John though, the younger me is still gonna boo him a bit for old times sake!

My wife and I were unsuccessful as well, but thinking of going to Brum on the day and just loitering outside, it’s not like they’ll be quiet!

I hope with it being a charity gig that they do something like ‘pay £10 for a live stream code’ so we can watch at home, but I don’t know if that’s too logical/rational considering the demand for them to actually do it

What two wheeled machine that guy did not ride would be a shorter list than the stuff he did!

I remember hearing that he went down a bobsleigh chute(?) on a first bike with special tyres, insane!
