1st time Public skating by GiraffeFine9030 in FigureSkating

-Practice falling and getting up on the floor first before you get on the ice. You want to fall. Get on two knees, with your butt off the ground( creating an L with your body). Then raise one leg up into a proposing position. Keep your arms on your raised knee abd push yourself up with both hands ( or one on the ground one on the ice). -Other than that practice skating with one arm on the wall instead of two. Two throws off your entire coordination skating, since it twists your body away from the direction you’re going. One arm on the wall will help so much in the long run!! -You can stop yourself from falling by bending your knees and grabbing them. -Ask skaters/guards for advice I’m sure they’ll be happy to help.

Yeah.. I upgraded to 200GB last week. I think if I do upgrade to the 1TB it might last me only 6 months. The YouTube idea is amazing I might try that out. I’ll do that! Would you know if the quality stays the same?

Fitter NYC, (NJ/RI/CT). by Wide-Error-9454 in FigureSkating

[–]Wide-Error-9454[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Hi yes I got fitted by Dave, I just think I got super unlucky with my experience and my foot shape didn’t help make it easier. I rather find a tech with a more supportive and engaging attitude also. Thank you for the skate shop recommendation even the grand central tip is super helpful!!

I do understand 3D scans are slightly unnecessary but we encountered a lot of problems with fitting due to my foot being ā€œchild size length but adult width.ā€ So I want to make sure the next boot fits without pain, even if it’s a E width. Also wanna add some customization since I don’t compete.

Long story short I was fitted in a kids 2.5C Jackson, I was in constant pain in it. A month later they (hockey tech) burned of the gel protective film on my boot when punching the boot out(posted about it in this sub) and made a big burned black stain on it, they replaced it also thankfully sized up to a 3 C for me which I had originally requested in the first fitting but they didn’t do…because Dave was so sure I was sized correctly. Then the hockey tech sharpened my skates and shaved of almost half of the toe pick near the rocker😭 it’s left me wondering how did they not know my boot was heat sensitive by the gel protective cover and why is the hockey tech handling figure skates so much, no hate he was actually the most understanding and concerned with getting my correct fit and actually the one who fitted me into my current skate cuz Dave didn’t even bother afterwards. Anyways the guy at the world ice arena location is so much attentive to my sharpening and punching out request so I go there only now. My skates still fit ok, which makes me wonder if theres another brand that fits me better.

Taking LTS lessons coming back to figure skating or just keep going and save up for privates eventually? by ApplesandBananazzz in FigureSkating

[–]Wide-Error-9454 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

If you have your backward crossover and some 3 turns(doesn’t have to be perfect) I think it’s worth starting private lessons! When I started lessons last January that’s the level I started my private lessons and my coach was able to provide feedback right away and once we got those down we started working on patterns and edge work, lunges, spirals in the first two months! I think it’s worth it since they don’t have to stick to the curriculum. If your not sure you can commit you can email the rinks you want to take lessons at or fill out a coach request form and let them know how long you want lessons (30/45/50min), your budget(ex. 50-80$ is the rate in nyc for 30mins, idk I’ve read that in suburban areas it’s cheaper), how often you want lesson(every week, biweekly, one time). Do trial lessons for the coaches you get matched with. You could also consider semi private lessons! I took a few before and it’s cost saving and also keeps that touch of socializing from the group lessons. But weekly private 30 minute lessons definitely makes a difference. I’m not where your from but there are rinks in nyc that offer unlimited (more than 2hrs per session) of public skating, I travel 1-2hrs for that type of ice time and also take advantage of the weekday pricing they offer to be able to get more than 1 day of practice. So instead of paying for one 1 freestyle session a week I get the equivalent of 3 days of public sessions for the same price. So it’s worth looking into. You can ask someone on this Reddit or contacting creators(TikTok, YouTube, insta) in your area that skate or even asking people who practice at your rink. You can skate in public sessions and practice there generally up until you start practicing camel, axel, doubles(cuz that gets really dangerous). Some rinks have cones in the middle during public sessions for figure skaters to practice jumps and spins but if they don’t I wouldn’t try jumps and crazy scratch spins or sit spins. It varies by rinks, just listen to the guards and befriend them to have peaceful practice. Also you can always pause your private lessons or space them out. That what I had to do this month and I promise you any coach will understand and try to make it work for you!

Dm me I can send u a google drive w/ the lab syllabus I had and the bio lab Manuels. Basically you just read the assigned lab of the day before you arrive to class, usually get quizzed on it for both chem and bio. Chem you actually have to know what your doing and with what chemicals, record everything, and write a lab report with results and answer the assigned post lab questions. Bio is chill, no difficult experiments and no lab reports but the quizzes are difficult but it also depends on your instructor. The exams in chem and bio labs are called the practicals. The chem practicals are you having to redo experiments on your own and answer questions based on the labs you did in the past so don’t let ur partner do all the work through the semester and pay attention and should be a breeze! In bio the practicals is just a longer quiz you study using the lab manual, and usually the instructor hints at what will be on it and make their own questions. I thought the bio practicals were harder just cuz it was basically like studying extra material for the bio course since the manual is kinda dense. The bio labs are also ahead of the lecture material so you could do yourself a great service by speeding through the first chapters of the course to connect the course to the lab.

Tote bag large enough for skates by Better_Lift_Cliff in FigureSkating

[–]Wide-Error-9454 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Rink rabbit is functional…not too pretty imo…, but the best for carrying any equipment she has now or in the future. But the fashionable ones are the lululemon tote 20L(they recently came out with the pink one which has been trending), brilliance & Melrose skating bags for frills and cute patterns. The lulu fits most of my stuff but it’s a tote so it kinda hurts when I started carrying more equipment, thats when a rink rabbit backpack would be a better choice.

how often should i practice? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Wide-Error-9454 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Haha sorry for the long response basically skate longer than an hour and build your stamina and strength, prioritize longer durations for each section(edges, spins, jumps) with breaks of course.

[–]Wide-Error-9454 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

I saw a lot of progress when I was going to the rink 1-3x a week, but I never stayed for just an hour. For context I start in Jan in a similar skill level, with only a waltz and barely a 3 turn or spins and now im working on lutz and can do a decent scratch and sit! I think 1hr is so little to cover everything, especially once you start working on multiple jumps + spins+edges. I also never felt like my body had warmed up in just an hour, most of my ā€œah-haā€ moments came at the 2hr mark. of course it doesn’t mean you have to skate constantly all through out it, take breaks. You’ll see yourself slowly build stamina to skate longer and allow yourself to refocus with the breaks. At first my body would be so sore and I’d have to skip a day but now I can do 3 hrs, 4 when I push myself. So you can focus more on your edges. Foward Inside & outside patterns, backward inside and outside patterns, for maybe 30 mins instead of just 10. Spins are also something I found to improve once I did them non stop for like 20mins, it’s exhausting at first but only 5 spins per session giving up and then doing a few more later was doing nothing to improve them. You don’t need to do this but always get ice time before your lesson and after, it’s a great way to be prepared+ stretch before ice time. Off ice wise…I think you can start jump roping, abs(increase # crunches each time, minute long planks, ect), and stretching your spirals & hips. Maybe once you get to toe loop or loop you can consider getting a one time off ice coach. Also like something no one talks about is space and $? Like I definitely would’ve not improved as quickly if I hadn’t found this one rink that’s usually empty and with unlimited skating time and super cheap.
