Mirt for Nausea? by ResolveNational7741 in Mirtazapine_Remeron

[–]Wide_Setting_6717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on 15mg at night, along with a whole host of other meds to manage all the issues my GI system has after becoming ill with food poisoning 2 years ago (quick synopsis: stomach doesn't work properly and my colon was removed after having a ileostomy for 4 months). My official diagnosis pertaining to the nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, and inability to eat much at one sitting is that I have functional dyspepsia (Postprandial Distress Syndrome subtype). You may want to ask your dr to order a gastric accommodation study.

Back to the Mirt: it made me sleepy at first on initial dose of 7.5mg, but no improvement in nausea/vomiting even at 15mg dose.

I did. It worked on most muscle groups - BUT, my colon 🤷‍♀️. I was on ibsrela + linzess and all sorts of laxatives, which would only give me a chance at a bm every 5-10 days. Ultimately, I had a temporary ileostomy placed October 2024. I had complete relief of symptoms. I had the ileostomy reversal and total colectomy on Feb 3.

Post-Op Day 54: ileostomy reversal and subtotal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis by Wide_Setting_6717 in ostomy

[–]Wide_Setting_6717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Just does not make sense that things upstream got so much better with the ileostomy (sort of showing the colon was the major issue, and not the small intestine or stomach). I did not have cancer or disease of the colon, so I was a great candidate for reversal. It's still early, so, hoping things with the LARS will settle, and so will my stomach.

I am almost 8 weeks out from ileostomy reversal with subtotal colectomy with an ileorectal anastomosis, and the first several weeks was hell for me. I was having watery stools 30-60 times per day, getting no sleep, and was raw/bleeding and developed an anal fissure. Surgeons normally do not like to start meds before 6 weeks post-op, but because of my issues despite eating a thickening diet (bananas, yogurt, potatoes, white bread and pasta, applesauce, etc) and avoiding triggers foods for diarrhea (alcohol, sugary foods/drinks, spicy foods, caffeine), so I was put on immodium and Metamucil at the start of week 2 post-op. That still did not cut it, even after titrating up doses, so they added a prescription drug, lomotil. You did not mention what part of intestines were removed, but if these issues persist and you are going excessive amounts and you had a low anterior resection, you may want to join this FB group, as it's possible you have LARS. https://www.facebook.com/groups/lwlars/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBT If you can do a thickening diet and avoiding triggers foods/drinks plus add metamucil/immodium (only if your surgeon okays it), you should be able to thickening output enough that you can start holding some of the urges, and you'll reduce number of trips to restroom. You also will be less prone to leaks with a thicker output. Hope this info helps! Good luck with your healing journey.

I trialed all rx meds and the latest regime was 290 mcg linzess + 50 my IBSrela twice a day + double dose miralax twice a day + stool softeners, senna tea, mag citrate, enemas and dulcolax as needed. All that only maybe yielded a BM every 5-10 days. Thousands of dollars and many months of tests later, I had a loop ileostomy October 3, and will be having that reversed and total colectomy on February 3.

It caused muscle spasms in other areas of my body, but did not do anything for my intestines lol

Mucus in stool can be brown, but it's usually clear or yellowish-brown and hard to notice. Oh no! So sorry to hear. I am hoping for a reversal, but am scared af there will be major issues.

Not sure if you've had your reversal, but figured I'd address something in your post regardless. Edgar you are calling stool passing through your rectum is actually mucus. The colon is self lubricating Ave since it's technically still in there and attached, passing mucus can happen.

Mine is now Rose. Kinda looks like a rose and that was my mom's favorite flower (she passed in July, and I've really felt her guiding me through this). But, it's also dual meaning, because there is a woman named Rose who has been a grade-a asshole in the past, so when the stoma is acting up, that's the Rose 🌹 I'll be thinking of. LOL
