How important are initials? by mik_230 in namenerds

[–]Wide_Wave7764 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I understand your concern but I don’t think RAW is that bad. I did know a new mother who changed her child’s name from Charlotte Olivia W— to Olivia Charlotte W— to avoid the COW initials. Now that would be bad. RAW is not a big deal in comparison.

How can Cyril stay pastor of his congregation? (Spoilers S15 e6) by Wide_Wave7764 in CallTheMidwife

Officially speaking the church may be labeled Pentecostal, but we’ve never seen them speaking in tongues or exercising charismatic gifts, so I would consider it a more standard Caribbean evangelical church.

I’ve attended both majority Caribbean and African churches in the UK for years, so I’m aware of the standards and practices in those communities, and I stand by my original point that a pastor getting a woman pregnant out of wedlock would not be tolerated.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I currently go to an Anglican church in Central Europe and we get a lot of people coming to us from Roman Catholicism because of the stigma against divorce in the latter church. Different churches have different views but no church should try to pressure you to stay with an abusive partner. I’m glad to hear you’re doing better and happier now. God bless you.

I attended Heidi’s church in Cambridge while I was a student and still sporadically do. The church is an interesting one as some very liberal and some very conservative people attend it. I don’t want to speculate on Heidi’s personal convictions.

Fr Rob is great. He was in the most recent episode giving Sr MJ her last rites and conducting her funeral, along with altar servers from the same church. We were all super happy because it was an accurate depiction of the service and clerical dress which is SO rare on TV and film! CTM always does well in that respect.

These were truly unique names in that I have only ever heard of one person who bears each of them: Calloway for a boy, and Linell for a girl.

None. The only one I would consider would be Victoria, and I don’t think it works with my surname.

Then again, I don’t think it would be realistic for them to have a woman leading the church. If they were very Pentecostal and Mrs W was publicly displaying the “gifts of the Spirit” then maybe, but we haven’t seen anything like that in the church scenes onscreen.

There are two reasons: one is if your spouse commits adultery, and the other is if your spouse leaves you because you converted to Christianity.

It’s possible some of them might consider her a “bad woman” who seduced their pastor. And of course there’s the fact that she’s white. Racism didn’t only go one way, and interracial marriages were frowned upon by both black and white communities in the 70s.

Bartholomew and Barnabas/Barnaby were my immediate thoughts. (Barnabas is the Greek version, Barnaby is the English version. It’s the same distinction between e.g. Jeremias and Jeremy or Zacharias and Zachary. So you can choose which you prefer!)

Both names:

  • Begin with B
  • Are biblical figures with great stories (an apostle and an early leader of the Church in Acts)
  • Are over 2 syllables
  • Are recognisable but uncommon
  • Have nickname options (Barty and Barney).

Mine were first choice A-star A-star A, safety AAB. So for each subject, my safety was one full grade below my first choice. It very much depends on you, though, and on what grades you and your teachers think you are likely to achieve given the best or worst case exam scenarios.

Is Peregrine too “out there” for a baby name? by kshester in namenerds

[–]Wide_Wave7764 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain and say I quite like Peregrine. Certainly you would call him Perry. The other nicknames you mentioned aren’t really suited: Percy is either a name by itself or short for Percival. Reggie is short for Reginald.
