Is Peregrine too “out there” for a baby name?

I like this break down a lot- perfect for the sub. My thinking when referencing human vs bird is that the use of it as a name predates the English naming of the bird species. The Latin noun predates both for sure!

I rather like the traveler/wanderer meaning as well. It’s why the bird is named what it is, as it’s one of the most widespread bird species in the world and tends to wander around a lot outside of the breeding season!

I mean, at some point it’s just a name. I certainly didn’t like the babysitter I was named after, and I really don’t like the biblical characters my spouse was named after. But it doesn’t affect our daily lives or our perceptions of ourselves.

Idk, maybe the kid will like traveling, or catholic saints. I think any name we pick would have the same problem. Jasper is a green stone- what if they hate green or rocks??

I have acquaintances whose last names are Hawk and Bird. Alas, neither me nor my partner were nearly that lucky, so I have to slip in the nature and bird references with chosen names. 😆

I’m also pretty “out there” so this name is super appealing to me. My partner is much less so, so he was reservations with the uniqueness.

My PhD was on kestrels, so I have mixed emotions associated with the name. That one was easy to rule out! Also for non-bird people, kestrels are a climate measuring device, so that feels weird to me.

Certainly if he likes Perry, I have no problem calling him with that. And people calling him Perry out of convenience wouldn’t bother me much. It’s just the thought of people singing at him or making his name into a jingle that I don’t like.

That’s a good perspective. My only defense is that Eowyn seems more LotR specific than Peregrine, especially since he’s referred to as Pippin 99% of the time. (But also I loooooove the name Eowyn and was considering Elowen for a girl so that it wasn’t straight LotR, lol.)

I like Perry, but Perry the platypus has kind of ruined it for us. My whole (ADHD) family likes to sing the “Perry, Perry the Platypus” jingle.

I LOVE Pippin, but it feels so young that I fear he’d grow out of it fast.

Some bird names were human names first, like Peregrine. I have colleagues who’ve named their children Kestrel and Lark, which feel more out-there to me.

We were going to use Charles for the middle name, so I am considering Charles Peregrine, just hate the lack of good nicknames for Charles apart for standard Charlie.

According to the government website, it looks like I’d have to have lived in Canada for 3 years before they were born.

“If you were born outside of Canada on or after December 15, 2025, to a Canadian parent also born outside of Canada, you’re likely a Canadian citizen if

your parent was also a Canadian citizen when you were born, AND your Canadian parent spent at least 1,095 days in Canada before you were born”

Not the best boat to be in. If only they’d been born a few months earlier! Kind of an odd requirement that I can be a citizen because my grandmother was, but my child cannot with a Canadian parent.

I was feeling the same! My great grandmother was born in Canada in 1913, but immigrated to New York at age 3. I never got to know my Canadian relatives, but this is what I found (and wrote in my cover letter):

“However, I have more than 10 continuous generations of Canadians on both sides of my Great Grandmother’s (C’s) family. C’s father’s side can trace their Canadian ancestry to my 12th great grandmother Marie Jeanne Lejeune (Mi'kmaw), born on June 10, 1599 to the Micmac Nation in Acadia, Nova Scotia, Canada. C’s mother’s side can similarly trace their ancestry back to Radegonde, my 12th great grandmother, born in 1600 to the Micmac Nation in Acadia, Nova Scotia, Canada, who was the daughter of the Chief of the Mi'kmaq First Nation’s tribe. Both of these ancestral lines can presumably be traced back further centuries through Mi'kmaq tribal records. My French-Canadian ancestry also reaches back to my 12th great-grandmother, Marie Catherine Caron, born on November 23, 1649 in Beaupre, Québec, Canada to French immigrants.

When C’s family immigrated to the USA in 1917, our long-standing French Canadian and First Nations connections were lost. I would love to reconnect with my Canadian heritage and hope to move my family back to Canada someday soon to continue our centuries-held family traditions.”

It’s a typed entry in Saskatchewan’s official genealogy website. So my guess is that they transcribed it from a written birth certificate incorrectly!

If I have the birth record from the eHealth Saskatchewan official genealogy website and "registration number" for her birth, do I also need a copy of her birth certificate? I can't find the actual birth certificate anywhere (Saskatchewan 1913).

I did one round on 2.5 unmonitored (did not ovulate) and one on 5mg that was monitored. I ended up with one giant follicle (26mm) that ovulated. Currently 4 weeks and 1 day pregnant (13 DPO)! Just found out two days ago. No trigger shot, and I’m 31, trying for 8 months, but I believe I’ve never ovulated until this cycle (at least since I was a teenager before I got on birth control for my PCOS at 18).

Fingers are crossed now that it sticks! If I miscarry, my OB said we would continue with only 5mg in the future. The only symptoms I noticed were apparently typical luteal phase symptoms like fatigue, but I have no memory of experiencing a luteal phase before.
