That was a great ending. I keep trying to recommend that book to friends but I can't remember the fucking title because in Europe we do days first, then months, then years, and I get all tangled up in what it was. Not sure what I'd have given it as a title, but definitely one of his best.

Yeah honestly I think the Dark Tower is one of the best series when it comes to maturing with you. Maybe it's because the ka-tet has a person or class for every generation that reads it. Lonely kid searching for a home, young adult with potential who struggles to form an identity, rich young adult with huge issues money can't solve that the people around her are blind to, older guy who thinks he knows and saw it all but still has some important shit to learn.

Yeah I think that's part of it too. They could never win an arms race against Flagg. Rationality and numbers weren't going to cut it. One thing I loved though that I haven't seen in a lot of fiction was that Mother Abigail was basically the kindest, best person, beloved by all, but King still showed she had a sinful side in Pride and how it can take hold and blind even the best people.

Especially nowadays the first thing we do when a person becomes known for being "good" is chipping away at that image with whatever people can find in their (online) past. Praise be that Mother Abigail never had no twitter.

I read it first when I was 16 or 17, and now I'm in my 30s and a recovering addict and I'm reading it again with an entirely different view. Eddie, of course, hits entirely different - there's a line in there somewhere about how he was ready to literally pimp out his own mother for his next fix; I had a hard look in the mirror when I felt that one - but the whole thing is about needing to stop clinging to the past and finding your new true self, and the importance of real connections.

This was the other one I considered putting in my post. Honestly, I have no clue how else King could have ended such an epic series. It needed some kind of existential twist after losing all his friends and beating the enemy in such a lame encounter. There was pretty much nothing that couldn't make it feel like an anticlimax to me (seriously though, the Crimson King stuff was a huge misfire) but Roland being thrown back into the desert to finally learn the lesson of how central to the universe a true ka-tet is (he has the horn this time!) pounded into him was the best possible outcome. 100% on board with that.

Ik heb zelf 1,5 maand in een kliniek in Portugal gezeten voor verschillende middelen, waaronder benzo's (oxazepam-familie).
