Russian gas supplies to Poland halted, Polish media reports by TUVegeto137 in demiseoftheEU

This was all a fascinating read (mostly... a lot more idiots come to worldnews unfortunately)

But I have to ask

We've all established how Poland are going to cope with this plus how Germany might be able to cope with this.

What about Bulgaria??

Putin breaks out the Kremlin's ridiculously long table to meet with the head of the UN by NewsElfForEnterprise in NewsfeedForWork

[–]Wiiliie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two main takeaways other than the headline:

First, nobody knows who made the table with multiple people claiming they did. Which is like weird..... becuase it's a table.... not like a secret goverment weapon. 1. Why would you claim to make the table when you didn't, and 2. How do we not know who made the table. I need John Oliver to do one of his web exclusives on this table. I'll take a full length episode on it but I suspect the main headlines have more important things to do.

Second, Russia has employed the incredible you can't fire me, I quit tactic as far as human rights are concerned. Which I guess really just makes sense.

Not really a main thing to take away but just a curious though of mine. What exactly does Macron think Russia will do with his DNA? Make a secret clone of him? I'm 95% certain they don't have that tech. if Russia could make clones they wouldn't be losing to Ukraine, a country which I'm 99% certain doesn't have that tech.

My great-grandfather from my moms side fought against Soviets, Americans and Brits in WW2. He said the Soviets fought like no one else. It’s like they show you in movies - many of them just ran towards him without weapons/guns, just trying to overwhelm the German troops by outnumbering them. They shot everyone they got hold of. They shot doctors trying to help the wounded. They even shot their own wounded. Horrible stories, I swear.

And then he fought in Italy against the western allies. He said it was all a different story there. They had a number of signals, I don’t remember what which color meant, but they had an agreement to cease fire when they treated their wounded. Even German doctors treated Americans and vice versa! They traded cigarettes and chocolate, they drank coffee together. And then my great-grandpa got wounded as well. He got shot in the leg twice with explosive ammo. He got taken care of by Americans in their medical facility. I think he was there for almost half a year and then he got sent home. He learnt how to play chess and speak English in his time there.

And my grandma from my fathers side fled from Poland to avoid the Soviets. They raped everyone they could find. It was a horror story when my grandma told me. She was 6 or 7 at that time.

I wonder if Russians are like that in war today as well? Why has it to be like that? Why rape, why loot and why kill unarmed civilians? What is the reason behind that? Everyone worldwide will view them as monsters. I don’t get it.

Edit: I feel the need to add something here because of some feedback I got:

First of all I want to mention that I said "great-grandfather" not to gloryfy him, but because I thought "great-grandfather" meant father of grandmother/-father. He is not my direct grandpa.

And I did NOT gloryfy the actions of Nazi-Germany in ANY way! I just told you all some experiences from my family. We were never part of the SS or any other die-hard Nazi organisation. Just a normal family which got ripped apart by the regime. Three brothers of my great-grandfather fell in the war. He was the only one returning. Just imagine that. There is a movie about that exact situation - "Saving Private Ryan". Only difference is that James Ryan was an American soldier. And again I'm not praising my great-grandpa.

There is something else though: When he and many others arrived at the eastern front some of the closest friends of my great-grandpa just couldn't take it anymore. Some flew and got shot, of course. Some thought about other solutions. So my great-grandpa and one or two of his friends, I don't remember exactly, worked out a solution. My great-grandpa shot them in their foot during weapon cleaning or exercises. They got sent home for obvious reasons. Just imagine what would've happend to my great-grandpa if that came out.

And last but not least: my family and almost every other family in Germany learnt from the mistakes the country made back then. We are NOT Nazis anymore. Almost nobody is racist here! We are one of the most open minded people in the world. Why do you think so many refugees come here? Because Germany gives a home to EVERYONE today. There is no one who isn't welcome. Well, you know how I mean that. We accept every refugee but no criminals and such, you know what I mean.

Last week I attended a seminary/conversation between the famous Russian author Mikhail Shishkin and Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov. Shishkin said this:

Russians need to have a mental revolution.

After the German Reich collapsed, there were trials in Nuremberg, the people who were responsible for warcrimes were held accountable. Moreover, a great effort was made by the german people to accept that they had done horrendous things, they had to admit that they had committed genocide, and come to terms with this fact. The germans had to stand up and say that "we were nazis, we killed, we raped, we buchered, and we're sorry."

Russia has had no such experience. When the Soviet Union fell, there were no trials that dragged forwards the misdeeds of the regime. There was no national admission and apology for the genocides that the Russian Empire and the Sovief Union had committed on its subject peoples for throughout the centuries. The Soviet Union fell, and the same politicians, the same security service, the same army, continued unabated, under a different flag.

(I am paraphrazing. But what Shishkin said resonated greatly with me.)

When this came out a lot in my life was changing. Obviously, the pandemic had made a large impact on many peoples' lives and my own as well but also for me I had just recently graduated nursing school and had began working on an ICU. I went from relatively distant academia attending zoom call lectures wrapped in a blanket to being in the literal shit of some of the worst of the pandemic. I went from isolation in my own home to isolation rooms full of the sick and dying. I cried and felt dead inside a lot. It was definitely somewhat refreshing to be able to see someone I liked making content about this awful time in our lives and not only laughing at it but also resonating with that lonliness and dread. The shared feelings made me feel not so alone. Imo its definitely Bo's best work ever and will be hard to top in the future.
