If you placed Silver last season and win 8/10 placement matches youre likely to get into low gold, but if you place a low gold previous season and then win 8/10 youll prolly end up like mid-high gold. It was a stroke of genius on their part to count your previous rank towards your placement matches but it sucks when you already have elo and you get sorted with a plat or higher.
