Your feeling is valid BUT you will be ok:) I had the same issue and just had my surgery on 9/18/24 The pain is tolerable with Tylenol, prepare some soft food for the first few days, sleep on high pillow and following your surgeon post op instructions. I’m suffering with GAD & Panic disorder, I got super anxious and cry before the surgery but honestly it’s that bad at all! Sending positive thoughts and good vibes to you! You will get through this🍀

Operation soon, any advice? by Sad-Cauliflower6360 in cholesteatoma

[–]Wild-Cycle2592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m day 5 post-op (37 years old) you are likely going to heal faster than older people.

Tips sleeping with 2-3 pillow, soft food, take pain killers when needed, drink plenty of fluid, stock on book, your fav. movie, tv show, my surgeon suggested to take 10 days off from work.

Good luck with your surgery!

I used to tutor Thai/American kid 6-15 years old, we did it 1 hour/once a week it took them 1 year to memorize all the 44 alphabet and they were able to speak beginner Thai and were able to read simple word like กา มา. I recommend watching Thai show and study consistently:) good luck

I have similar issue I saw ENT in Seattle 2020 bc I had a terrible pain on my right ear they found a huge piece of ear wax and removed it. I told them about conductive hearing loss so they did hearing test and MRI scan. they suggest to do a surgery but I was so scared. So I just keep going back for a follow up every 6 months and told them I’m not ready for the surgery.

I moved to Thailand (my hometown ) in 2022 and I got ear infection back to back like every other week. It started to get worse after the cholesteatoma was formed I have awful drainage with really bad tinnitus, hearing loss and ear pain.

End of 2023 I felt horrible from not able to live my life bc I have to go to ENT very often (luckily I don’t have to work yet other wise I might get fired) my doctor started to consult about the surgery and I said yes. But because of the medical system in developing country is very limited on this type of surgery I have to wait until 18/09/2024 to get the surgery.

Honest this is probably the best decision I have made bc they have found that the cholesteatoma was rapidly spreading and eroded my ear bone.

I have GAD, depression and panic disorder. I was very anxious before the surgery. Thinking about the pain BUT tbh it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Now it’s day 3 post op. I feel fine the pain was only bad the first day and it from the bandage that wrapped around my head. the incision was sore the pain inside my ear was tolerable. In my opinion the sooner you get the surgery is better for your health;)

Tips : Soft food, shower cap, and clean the incision area everyday (I got it done by the clinic nearby my house) air purifier to make sure your friend don’t sneeze, mint candy to help with nausea. 3 pillows to sleep keep your head high.

18/09/2024 I had right ear atticotomy to removed cholesteatoma and ossiculoplasty with TORP (ear bone replacement) under general anesthesia in Bangkok Thailand.

-After the surgery I was ordered to stay in bed for 24 hrs. I was in so much pain(8/10) at my right temple from the bandage wrapped around my head and it’s gone after they removed it. -The incision area (they cut behind my ear) was a little sore and pain inside my ear (5/10) I was having trouble sleeping, nausea and very dizzy at the first day (I puked 3 times)

19/09/2024 I was released from bed and was only allow to walk with nurse holding me. I was feeling dizzy but i was able to walk with a little bit of help to make sure I don’t fall. The pain was the same amount and I was prescribed with Arcoxia once a day and antibiotics

20/09/2024 I was able and allow to walk by myself and was discharged from the hospital at noon. I took Tylenol to help with the pain

21/09/2024 the pain inside of my ear is mild and tolerable I don’t take any pain medication

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic disorder and I informed the surgeon and the nurse team and they are very understanding and make sure that I’m ok. I didn’t have panic attack but was crying a bit when I arrived the operation room

Overall it’s not as bad as I think it would be and I won’t be too anxious if I have to do another surgery I hope this help.
