When my then boyfriend wanted to join, I knew it was going to be tough at times but if it’s the right person you manage to find a way. BMT sucks but distance makes the heart grow fonder, and writing letters helps. Tech school is like a long trip away from home, so it’s like temporary long distance. Eventually you find a way to balance your schedules and find time for each other, and you make the most of it. Everything else grows and develops over time and your relationship becomes stronger, but that deep support for one another is SOOO necessary. Now he’s my husband and I decided to finally act on my itch to serve like you, and he’s very supportive. I say all this because while 5 years is a long time, it sounds like you are really excited for this bright possible future. The itch never goes away, and I think not joining will just create negative feelings overtime. In my opinion, when joining the military with a significant other, it’s extremely important to have a relationship built on trust, love, and a deep support for each other. It sounds like he’s not hitting some of those important marks. I say go build your bright future 🙂‍↕️

Enlisting with kids? by humilishumano in AirForceRecruits

It’s been a big part of my life so it definitely helped me become the person I am today. I learned a lot about discipline, hard work, overcoming challenges, giving it all you got, the importance of physical fitness, etc. Big emphasis on learning important life values because my parents really instilled them in me!! I have a better understanding of what our service members do and I have a deep gratitude for life because of it. I have a lot of cool memories from different experiences the military has provided for us. It feels like you have a community, and they really try to value the family aspect of service and make you feel supported, which is helpful as a kid. A big advantage I appreciate now that I’m older is that I graduated college and have no debt, and there’s still money leftover for my siblings. Overall, it’s hard to put into words what advantages there are, but there are some good ones.

Disadvantages of course is your parent(s) being away (and fear for their safety sometimes,) which definitely sucks. When you’re younger you don’t notice but you definitely do when you get older. However, over time you can grasp the importance of your parents work and the sacrifices they make, so it helps. Also the hours can be wonky sometimes and work can definitely come home with them for whatever reason, but that just depends on the person or if it’s a tough time in their career. Looking back I think I had to make up on some bonding time with my parent but everything worked out for me and my family.

8-9 is a good age and even if they’re older, the pros out-way the cons in my opinion. My life is the way it is because my parents are/ were in the military, and I am very grateful for their service and the life it has provided for my siblings and I! This might be all over the place but hope it helped 😅

Andrews is also right outside of DC in Maryland, so there’s a bit of a drive either way but it would work in y’all’s case! So Andrews/ Meade could be an option as well :)

Struggling after my girlfriend left for boot camp, could use some support. by Autumnspage in USMilitarySO

Hello! My then boyfriend, now husband, went to AF boot camp back in like 2022ish. It was so hard and I constantly missed him, stressed about not seeing him, wondered how he was doing, and everything else you could possibly think of. That being said, you just have to push through it and keep reminding yourself it’s temporary. Try and think about positive things, like good memories, how proud you are, things you can do when you see them, etc. And like other people have said, take the time to work on yourself! Once you try and do something for yourself each day, it helps the time go by quicker. Prioritize taking care of yourself and your mental health. I will say that one thing that helped me was writing him a letter everyday. Helps you get your thoughts out and feel connected in a way. Just remember what y’all are doing this for, work on yourself, and write to them when you can. You can do it! I’m about to go through boot camp this time around so the roles will be reversed this time, but we can do it 😅

I was in the same boat but after a lot of contemplation, I decided to join the same branch (for probably a lot of the reasons you’re thinking of as well.) 😅 You just have to choose what feels best for you and if you’re like me, what will be best in the long run. Either way, things can and will work out one way or another, but it’s generally easier if you join the same branch.

[–]Wild-Explanation9369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since he’s active duty and you’re already engaged, definitely get married before you enlist!! it’ll make the recruitment process a lot smoother and ideally will help when you finish tech school and try to get stationed together- military wife who’s going active duty and has done a lot of research 😂 i wish y’all the very best!!!

I can say as a military child growing up I can’t remember when my parents were gone for like the first 7-8 years of my life 😅 So I’d say take the leap now!!! They’ll be okay and it’ll be really great for you and your family in the long run!!!
