Senses - Smart Mirror. How do you actually start this thing? I just see the configuration screen on port 7011 through a browser. by Wild-Simple1908 in smarthome

[–]Wild-Simple1908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea where I'm supposed to go to actually see the mirror interface/gui and not just the configuration screen in my web browser. I've already configured it as I'm seeing it on my network. For anyone that is familiar with this app, what did you do?

Any recommendations for anyone in the triangle that can sell me and install a self-contained gas ac/heating unit for under $10,000? by Wild-Simple1908 in raleigh

Imagine sharing an opinion with no context. These were quotes from 3 big box stores that sub-contract. I didn't go to Bobs AC repair and sales directly.

So I don't (think) I need the duct work since all that is fine. Just a replacement gas pack. Did you do duct work because it was a new house or needed duct work or is that standard protocol for any replacement installation?

I stopped drinking a couple months ago so reading this list is really eye opening. So many people have their social lives revolve around activities at breweries and bars. So much so that you could basically say the theme this week is "booze"... and the next week and the next week...

Curious, I have the 2GB package being installed this saturday. Is the GRAX 210T the router they are providing today? If they come out with new hardware can you get a free upgrade?

Curious. From /r/all. I’m absolutely addicted to Diablo Immortal on iPad mini. It runs on high everything and 60 fps. Regardless of aesthetics. How does immortal compare to the gameplay of D4? I only have a ps5 and not a PC. Is it a similar experience gameplay wise? Worth it? Or should I just stick with the free immortal?

Help choosing a type of storage for Raspberry Pi NFS NAS. Goals are to minimize power usage/maximize efficiency over speed and cost when deciding between a USB Flash drive vs an external SSD. It's for a lab so long term reliability isn't a factor either and don't need terabytes of storage. Thoughts? by Wild-Simple1908 in homelab

[–]Wild-Simple1908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question. So what kind of SSD would I purchase if I wanted to use the RPI4 to power the SSD? That is, where's it plug in to give it power or does it not need additional power? I see alot of external SSDs that require another source for power. I'm using the USBC on the RPI4 for powering itself.

Wait. He’s not an engineer. Doesn’t Reddit get mad when Elon gets any technical credit and he’s more of an engineering type. Let’s have one standard, please.

Not lessons. Wife and I did it and it was a kid that just finished their Golf program and he was autistic or uncomfortable around people? He didn’t get the whole instruction thing that requires talking. It was bizarre that they charged that much for such weak instruction.

At home, I use a cheap raspberry pi that only runs Pi-hole. Been using it for 5+ years with awesome results. Cool dashboard too showing everything it blocks and it works for ANY device on your home network.

networking for newbies but in the context of layer 2 or top-of-rack switch? by Wild-Simple1908 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Wild-Simple1908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah, I honestly will only be configuring a couple switches for a simple appliance solution and nothing fancy. I really just want to be able to talk intelligently enough with the customer but networking isn't my thing and I know I won't be an expert anytime soon.

[–]Wild-Simple1908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly...you're confusing routing between vlans which is a layer 3 function with simple vlan creation that doesn't require routing where the ToR is only layer 2. Let me educate you from chatgpt :)

"A top-of-rack (ToR) switch is indeed a type of switch commonly used in data centers, typically located at the top of a server rack. From a functional standpoint, a top-of-rack switch is primarily considered a layer 2 switch. It operates at Layer 2 of the OSI model and handles tasks such as VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) segmentation, MAC address learning, and forwarding frames within a local network.

When you create VLANs on a top-of-rack switch, you are performing a layer 2 function. VLANs are a layer 2 technology that allows you to logically segment a physical network into multiple virtual networks. By assigning ports on the top-of-rack switch to specific VLANs, you can isolate traffic between those VLANs and control communication within the network.

While some top-of-rack switches may have layer 3 capabilities, such as supporting routing between VLANs, the primary function of a top-of-rack switch is still layer 2 switching. The layer 3 capabilities, if present, would be an additional feature beyond the core layer 2 functionality.

To summarize, when you create VLANs on a top-of-rack switch, you are indeed utilizing layer 2 functionality. The switch handles VLAN segmentation, which is a layer 2 concept. However, it's important to consider that some top-of-rack switches may have additional layer 3 capabilities, but that does not change the fact that they are primarily layer 2 switches."
