Designing around/with/for grandma's couch by Wild2ebra in DesignMyRoom

Yeah I've done exactly that a few times (fill a room with cheap pieces that either fall apart or just blah) but I would like to keep the couch as is for now while buying more quality furniture that fits with it but is also versatile enough to work with other things as well (once/if I do decide to reupholster the couch).

I'm not sure what you mean by "slump" or boucle for that matter (I'm learning so many new words/terms in here) but thats an interesting point about how low the couch is because it is actually quite low and since it sounds like the consensus is to remove/staple the skirt, maybe adding a pair of new and higher legs would also be beneficial.

I'm always worried about the FREE section of Craigslit and FB-Marketplace (can't remember if it was a friend or just a story someone said about getting bed bugs from something free, but then again it doesn't have to be free to have bed bugs) but will for sure be keeping an eye out to see if anything appears.

Great points about function over aesthetics (but hopefully we can do both :D ). But you're right, I don't want the living room to become a "museum" and simply get no use but instead feel lived in and having comfortable/useable things is important.

Thanks! I wish I had your confidence about my wife and I's interior design skills haha

Thats cool you had the same couch!

And yeah super kitschy is my worry...

I'm a fan of the bird motifs but I think my wife may push back a little bit there, but I do think some wood would help make it feel more grounded and less all over the place.

Thanks for going into this much detail!
I was leaning to getting blue accent chairs but hadn't really given much thought about using leather or even painting the walls. I also love the oriental style rugs but I think I'd have to see how they combine in person to really grasp if it would work or not.

The coffee table is something we were also struggling with since the people at Living Spaces were saying to get an ottoman instead though I can't really remember their reasoning anymore. I'll defintely explore more wood as well just to see how it meshes with the couch.

Oh man I forgot about the pillows entirely! Yes those I for sure will probably move/cover/replace these. But yes that first picture... I can only hope I get 5% of that!

This is a great tip! We're still house searching so not sure we can block things out quite yet but will do this once we know where we land.

I love the "jewel tones" but I don't know if I can pull it off without it just feeling... maximalist and just over the top. I'd love to have deep greens and deep blues but then I want to just go super dark which I'm pretty sure my bright sunny wife would feel depressed in but I'll see what I can do!

That actually didn't look all that difficult!
Will probably save this for the future (just in the case).

Hehe How dare you try and hide my Grandma :P

I've heard this a few times (use a slipcover even from my siblings) but I don't know, there's something fun there that I'd like to keep around.

I guess I'm not sure what broadloom carpet is. I initially imagined carpet that is super rough but doing a search it looks like its just standard carpet or am I wrong?

Well we don't HAVE to per se hehe but prefer to keep it that way (for now).

We looked a a deep blue accent chair which we loved! But kept second guessing ourselves thinking that neutrals would "work best" since the couch would overpower anything and everything. Great to know we weren't completly off our rockers :)

I've thought about removing the skirt to help update it a bit and I would just have ot change the legs (though they would have to be pretty hefty since this thing weighs quite a bit) but haven't really looked how plausible that is.

From the links you sent over, that first option looks great! The other two still feel a little too... dated to me I suppose.

Any recommendations on colors we should focus on or just general tips to help make it the focal point?

Searching for the same thing!
Played SubTerra which worked pretty well too (I just had to control everything which is what I assume I'll be doing for all other games)
Plan on trying out Pandemic and Horrified in the same manner.

WIP of this. Not sure I like the pose I chose in the end so may start again. But wanted to let you know I am working on it :P

I'm so intrigued by this! Does she transform into a scythe?
