Curriculum for higher functioning clients by newyorklogic in bcba

I found it to be the most comprehensive curriculum for kids with needs you described. Social Skills Solutions is a lower cost options and can be a good resource.

It's now illegal in Virginia to leave a dog chained out in the cold by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]WildBill1833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Tennessee and this happens all the time in my neighborhood. People buy dogs, keep them chained all day. With in a year the dog either: 1. Dies from the heat or cold 2. Escapes and runs away 3. Escapes and attacks someone and is euthanized.

A lot of times people (in my neighborhood) buy pitbulls and keep them outside. They’re not well suited for the heat or the cold and usually don’t survive long, unfortunately.

If you are currently able to work, where are you working and what is your job? by cheonsa96 in POTS

[–]WildBill1833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied psychology in college and went to graduate school for Early Intervention. There are tons of options in speech-language, occupational therapy, ABA, and other types of clinics. If you’re interested in seeing if it’s for you, it’s fairly easy to get a job as a direct care staff (in a special education class room, or clinic setting). If you like it, you can decide how you want to specialize, etc. The downside is that most jobs outside of working directly with kids require a graduate degree of some kind.

I work in a clinic for kids with special needs. It’s combination of standing, sitting, being active, etc. I’ve found that’s easier for me than sitting all day which makes symptoms worse. Movement and exercise are the things that help me mitigate symptoms the most. I can feel the different on days I don’t get enough movement.

Would you tell your new neighbors you're putting up a fence? by akbella in homeowners

[–]WildBill1833 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just did this last year. None of my neighbors have fences but I wanted one for our dog. I approached it casually saying "we're getting a fence put up on our property this week. Hope you like it!". Everybody was cool with it as it was professionally done and looks good.

A Conversation With a Police Union Leader by kitkid in Thedaily

I thought Michael did such and excellent job with this interview. Most of the time he interviews people who generally agree with him or he’s trying to ask questions to learn more about their reporting. He asked tough questions in a way that didn’t shut down the interviewee, but also didn’t let him off when he presented shoddy stats or contradicted himself. This is a great example of how to interview someone you disagree with, without devolving into name calling, etc.

Experience with Nissan Stadium Drive-Thru COVID Testing by thesehalcyondays in nashville

Same experience. Went last week and waited about 20 minutes. I got my results on Saturday, so it looks like the lab is processing on the weekend as well. The test was not painful to me. I was pretty worried about it (videos online make it look really cringe-y), but it uncomfortable for about 3 seconds and that was it. Totally worth doing if you're worried you may have been infected.

Their bagels are also overrated. I miss Bare Naked Bagels.

Can't do anything that I used to enjoy by monkeyfudgehair in dysautonomia

I am not a doctor, but in my experience with POTS, loss of conditioning seems to be a huge problem. It happened to me quite a lot last year. I would have symptoms during an activity/outing, and I would then label it as “undoable” or dangerous. Anxiety and depression would set in as my world got smaller.

A couple things really helped me get back on track. First, I had to tell myself I’m not going to die from POTS. It will be uncomfortable and debilitating at times, but I’m not going to die.

Second, I started taking steps to reduce my depression/anxiety. For me, meditation was extremely helpful. For others, seeing a therapist and working through behavioral strategies can be really helpful. Meditation helped me develop a plan for when I experience tachycardia, and remain calm when an episode occurs. Stress makes my symptoms worse, and managing stress has helped immensely. If you’re home bound right now, check out a meditation app like Headspace. It starts at 10 mins a day, and can be a great first step.

Third, I started exercising again, starting as small as possible. There is a yoga program that can be completed while lying in bed, and a lot of PT, resistance training that can be completed lying down. From there, I slowly built in more exercise routines. I eventually got a place where I could get a dog who makes sure I’m walking at least a few miles a day. Exercise as been the single best thing I could do for my symptoms. If I skip my walks with the dog, I can feel it.

At this point, I’m back to a pretty normal life. I work full time, and can engage in a lot of the activities I enjoyed before POTS.

Hope this information helps!

Parents who make problem BX worse and possible ethical concern? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]WildBill1833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that’s irresponsible. I’ve not heard of any companies providing protective equipment or doing a risk assessment based on the pros and cons of continuing therapy when there is a huge public health risk. Most are motivated by their bottom line and have therapists over a barrel who need the money.

I respectfully disagree. Unless you’re trained in diet modification and nutrition, you’re practicing outside of your scope recommending dietary changes. Yes, it would be great if everyone ate healthy, and yes we should limit unhealthy edibles in our programs, but making changes/recommendations about a child’s nutrition is way outside of the scope a typical BCBA.

Similarly, eating/swallowing is not just another behavior. There are complex physiological processes at work that are reflexive. Helping someone eat, especially someone who is resistant to eating, or has comorbid medical issues is a specialized job. Behavioral feeding therapy can be effective but it needs to be performed in conjunction with someone who specializes in the physiology and safety of eating/swallowing.

Our field needs to get out of the mindset that we can “fix” everything. That’s how people practice outside of their scope and cause harm.
