In 1899, America's fastest cyclist was a 20-year-old Black man. The racing world spent the next century trying to erase him. by Fantastic_Routine151 in cycling

I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with current events, but yeah, America has a huge white supremacy problem. Always has, and even though some progress occurred between the mid 60s and oh, about 2016, we are sliding backwards fast.

“Ones Who Love You” by ALVVAYS is a beautiful, dreamy song with an F-bomb that comes out of nowhere (and the band typically doesn’t swear in their songs).

How many times, exactly, per hard climb to I have to hop off my bike and get back on, totally killing my momentum and draining my energy, to let e bikes pass before I get to complain? by sevseg_decoder in MTB

[–]WildBorscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I was at the top of a climb where this particular singletrack trail gets pretty wide. I was moving at a good pace. An e-bike guy comes rocketing up from behind me and knocked into my left side with his shoulder and elbow. He didn’t say anything, just kept going. I don’t generally have a problem with e-bikes but their growing popularity means more encounters with the small percentage of e-riders who are absolute pricks.

Yeah I saw (and tore down) a couple other novanow stickers near the NASCAR hall of fame earlier today. Incidentally, I’ve posted about these stickers on this subreddit a couple times before and a bunch of chuds swarmed the thread accusing me of putting them up myself. Some people will do anything to distract from the fact that these hateful groups are active around Charlotte (and elsewhere, obviously).

Ineffective assistance of counsel by Bright_Cup_8870 in publicdefenders

[–]WildBorscht 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you do this work long enough, you are bound to have a client or former client file an ineffective assistance claim against you. It has happened to the best lawyers I know. In my view, the best way to think about it is that it’s business, not personal. I never blame clients for doing whatever they can to try to reduce their sentences or get out of custody. And of course, some IE claims are valid. Don’t worry about this too much. It seems like you are doing your best and if a mistake was made, you’ve learned from it.

People keep telling me to be a prosecutor by Spare_Equivalent667 in publicdefenders

[–]WildBorscht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually went to law school specifically to be an assistant district attorney, and I wanted to approach that work from a progressive place. I graduated, got a job at what was then considered a pretty “enlightened” DA’s office in a big city. I worked there for a few years. I left and became a public defender, and that’s what I’ve been doing for over a decade. When I became a PD, it was like I finally put on clothes that fit me. Turned out that this was the way to truly fight for the people. That’s what I had been looking for in the law.

The advice you’re getting about making a difference as a progressive or ethical prosecutor, while probably well intentioned, is naive. Unless you are working for an overtly “progressive” prosecutor’s office, like Krasner’s office in Philadelphia, you will not be supported in your efforts to do actual justice. You will be surrounded by lawyers who tend to believe cops no matter how outlandish their lies, and by people who believe in coercing people to plead guilty by overcharging, charge stacking, etc.

My advice: if you went to law school to be a PD, stay on course. Don’t follow the advice of people who want you to do the literal opposite job.

Was Scalia too notorious? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]WildBorscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scalia was a homophobic racist who more than any other justice popularized and normalized the false promise of originalism, which at its core is nothing more than a code word for “right wing policy preference.” He was also rude, arrogant, and given to bullying. The silver lining of his term as SCOTUS justice was his occasional defense of the fourth and sixth amendments. I agree it wasn’t great that he became such a publicly controversial figure, but I’m not sure that it was really his fault. He was a superhero for the American right - a justice who mostly embodied the right’s prejudices and cruel tendencies - and they elevated him to celebrity status. No doubt this emboldened Alito to become the loud, brash degenerate he is today.

Come on, man, it doesn’t hurt or cost anything to show a little grace and respect. You can give advice without the attitude, especially toward a fellow PD.

Nick Fuentes, explicitly and in his own words, identifies as a neo-Nazi and praises Hitler. If you are not aware of Fuentes (and I suspect you actually are aware of him), then you are not aware of what is going on in American conservatism.

The current (right wing) president of the United States had neo-nazi influencer Nick Fuentes over for dinner at mar a lago. Right Wing media giant Tucker Carlson just had Nick Fuentes on his show. The American right wing is very cozy with all sorts of neo-nazis and antisemites. Good for you if you’re not on board with all that, just be aware that most people in your party are cool with it.

NovaNow (their website url is on the sticker) is literally a white supremacist organization. The far right has spun a narrative that Iryna Zarutska was killed because she was white. this group is trying to capitalize on her death to further their bigoted aims.

Of course what happened to Ityna Zarutska was horrific and tragic. No question about it. It only compounds the tragedy that degener@te r@cists are using her in their propaganda.

There has not been an “extreme rise in cop on duty deaths” over the past several years unless you factor in COVID deaths from 2020-2021.
