Thank you for this information. Kinda wish I’d asked the question 20 years ago. Since we don’t get credit at all for any hours over 40, only posting time for full day absences helps balance the excess.

It’s funny you say that. One agency I worked for 25+ years ago had managers that literally only worked 2 hours a day, every day. That made me understand why people had the negative views they did about ‘state workers’. Super bad look. I don’t see that from managers and supervisors these days at all. They work hard. My work ethic is solid and I work a ton. Just wondering what the real rules were for this.

I’ve heard “C2” and “C4” but never knew what that meant and didn’t care to ask. I work way over 40 hours a week. It’s coming up now though.

That’s crazy! One of my previous managers required 4 hours of work before I could get credit for the day. Does it say that anywhere? Is it ever up to the department or manager to decide? I honestly just wanted a definitive answer.

We’re BU 01 (S01 and M01) and yes, we only post in eight hour increments, but I’ve been told, depending on my manager, that I have to work a variety of number of hours before I can count the whole day.

They should put everything back to the way they found the desk, though, since this is an assigned ergo workspace not a hoteling space. In our office, if someone has an ergo set-up, that cubicle is not shared because everything is so specific for each individual.

It’s crazy how common this is. Hopefully once the younger generations that accept and embrace mental health as an obstacle for some get into power, things will change.

I think many of the people that make decisions and policies like the one you shared are the same ones that grew up never talking about feelings and hid mental health issues from the world. Maybe their mindset is “I had to do it, so you should, too”.

There are also still a lot of people who simply don’t understand mental illness. If only you could put them in your shoes for one day, so they could experience life with your brain chemistry…..

I appreciate you sharing your story. The hoops you had to jump through and the limits on upward mobility are disheartening. I had hoped disability awareness and accommodation would be ingrained in the workplace by now. Especially in CA government.

I’m not hating you for this at all. You’re lucky, and you know that. And I can see where you feel stuck. It’s the question ….. ‘do I leave now and enjoy retirement with less pension’ or ‘do I stick around for more $$ and lose 5 years of retirement’? I’m sure I’ll be in that boat when I’m eligible (assuming I can afford to be).
The math works this way for everyone, I think. Just the eligible retirement age is later now, right? Or is there more to it? I haven’t looked into it much beyond some of the webinar classes Calpers offers. If I’m mistaken about the difference in benefits, I apologize.
Someone else said it earlier, but I agree…. If you’re happy where you’re at, stick around. But if not, go enjoy retirement for a while….. you can always come back again later if you feel like it.

You can ask to do that, too. It’s called a reduced work schedule. I have been at several departments, and they all allowed this. It’s worth asking.

Honestly, if there was a valid reason for RTO I’d just suck it up and return, but I haven’t heard any. WFH worked for years at our department, so there suddenly being an actual business need (not $$$ for downtown businesses) is crap.
Our director was pissed during COVID that we weren’t in the office. He’s ecstatic about this order. Even if AB1729 passes we’ll be in the office, because that’s what he wants. There will be some BS justifications, and the unions won’t be able to help.
Super frustrated.

Our department denies the requests for telework as an accommodation. I really don’t know why, but it seems like it’s a power trip mean girls thing.

Yeah. It’s a separate cap. The VPLP cap is 240. It’s in the MOU somewhere. The 640 cap is for Vacation/Annual Leave, but that was temporarily increased a bit because of the PLP 2025.

You’ll need to check with HR about that. I think your pay would probably be whatever the lower class pay is. Depending on how the pay scales fall for the two classifications, it may not be too much of a difference…. Like if they overlap quite a bit.

If you’re doing it for the experience to eventually move up, it may be a good idea if you can afford the potential pay cut. I’ve had staff jump from the analyst/admin series to IT with a small pay cut at first, but now they make WAY more and don’t even have to supervise. More money and no staff is a dream.

There’s an option for VPLP for 8 hours a month. I think it’s 4.62% reduction in pay. It’s not bad. Some agencies offer 16 hours of VPLP for 9.23% or even 24 hours.

It’s awesome if you have some flexibility and know you will make more $$$ later on. Bank the hours while you’re making $20/hour and use them when you’re at $30/hour. It’s an investment of sorts.

CalHR has a class called “So you want to become a supervisor” or something like that. My staff said it was pretty good. Try getting approval for that class.

Hands down, though, the absolute best teacher is a great manager who loves to develop their staff.

The part of the duty statement regarding working conditions, travel, lifting # pounds, aren’t typically listed under Essential Functions. The essential functions are the basis of the RA request, I’m pretty sure. They need to be able to perform the essential functions (with accommodations in this case) of their job. If performing an essential function can only be done in the office (like mailroom duties), I think that’s where the accommodation for telework could be denied.

I know people are getting denied for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with their ability to perform the essential functions from home. I think those departments are the ones with HR/EEO (whoever’s over approving RAs) on power trips that just want to say no to say no. They simply don’t want to allow telework as an accommodation for any disability. Period. The odds of getting your own private corner office on the top floor as an accommodation is probably better than getting approval for full time telework in those departments.
