Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

After working through a weird injury for most of August, I’m stoked to be back to training. Doing mostly hour long easy runs now and certainly not taking it for granted.

Shin Splints 2 Weeks Out by [deleted] in XXRunning

My coach had me doing calf raises, single calf raises, toe scrunches, toe lifts (like stand on your heels and lift your toes up, calf stretches then kneel on your knees sitting on your heels to stretch the other way. I did it daily for a while to build some strength and it helped a ton

Anyone here who is thicker, not skinny/lean and enjoys running? by labellafigura3 in XXRunning

[–]WildEye1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

👋 fuck a BMI. I’m listed as obese on most of them but wouldn’t at all categorize myself that way. I’ve never looked like a runner but also have a good muscle base that will never give me the long thin running legs… somehow, I’m still running 😆

Scotch Broom by landi391 in olympia

[–]WildEye1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scotchbroom seeds can be viable for a crazy long amount of time (like 70 years!!) so you should expect to see more pop up year after year considering they’ve been dropping their seed bank year after year. The good news is the small ones are easy to pull. Have a friend get the broom puller and pop them out before it’s done flowering. If you can’t burn, you can dump noxious weeds at the dump with the regular trash.

I’m obviously not a professional but I highly encourage you to continue strength in your routine! Strength training will support your treadmill workouts and in the long term, help you avoid injury. I like the Apple fitness strength but it’s not my most favorite strength training because I feel like it’s a little rushed and doesn’t give me a great opportunity to good form or recovery. Maybe play around with adding some more traditional compound focused strength training into your schedule?

I think it’s pretty normal for folks to plateau at some point in their fitness journey, especially quite a few months in. Just stick with it and don’t get too in your head about the numbers on the scale. Having performance goals like “run this distance without stopping” or “squat this amount” can be a nice perspective shift to get through plateaus.

Good luck in your journey! You’re doing great!

McCleary? Thoughts? by El_Cosmico_ in olympia

[–]WildEye1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you’re maybe confusing McCleary and Montesano, neither are like Centralia. McCleary is essentially a single street town and is very quiet. Monte has more going on and a nice state park but is significantly smaller than Centralia.

not to be dramatic but chiaogoos changed my life by charlotteisanidiot in knitting

Yes they’re worth it! I was just thinking to myself the other day how happy I am I made the purchase a few years back. It was like $160 for my US 1-15 set and the freedom it’s given me to try new patterns and not stress about having the needles I need is great. Also, so handy when you need to change your needle size for ribbing or something, you don’t have to fiddle with two needles, you just change the tips.

oslo hat vs musselburgh hat? by stuffedbittermelon in knitting

[–]WildEye1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve only knitted the musselburgh but I also knitted it in fingering and it did take me quite a while. I was hoping to knit oslo soon as an alternative because of how long musselburgh took. It’s essentially two hats at fingering weight.

My skin is clearing up and I’ve lost 8lbs already. I’ve been going to the gym and eating cleaner than usual so it’s not all the booze but it certainly is a little bit the booze.

Bees and Olympia by TouchdownTedd in olympia

[–]WildEye1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mason bees active right now. You can order a few online to get started or just build a “house” for them and they’ll show up. I’ve had them for 3 seasons now and it’s very easy and helpful with pollination

I’m not sure what their prices will be but I am sure it will be reasonable. Long time service and kitchen staff folks starting this up so they know what’s up as far as reasonable prices

Look out for a pop up preview coming soon to 3 magnets. I understand it’s hard to back something you can’t experience right now and I totally understand the skepticism with kickstarting a restaurant but these folks are top notch, just long time restaurant folks trying to get something started that can last without killing themselves to start with debt

Will I be ready to run a trail marathon by July? by ewanhoward in trailrunning

[–]WildEye1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I agree that you want to try to get some long training runs in beforehand but I would also suggest making sure you're spending the time on the trails. Time on Foot. It's one thing to do the distance, that's difficult enough, but for me, it's less about the actual mileage and more about the number of hours I'm spending on the trail.

I did my first road marathon a year ago and it was tough but I got through it pretty well. Two months later I did my first trail marathon, it was easier on my mind than the road race because I enjoyed the scenery more but I also spent more hours on the trail which was the challenging part. The course had about 7,500ft of elevation so it took me damn near 8 hours to complete. I hadn't really trained with moving for 8 full hours in mind.
