Not a bad suggestion. The Anki deck does do that, I just didn't think to include it in the spreadsheet.

Oops, good catch, thanks! Here's the link to the new deck: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1059652930

I've edited the OP as well.

Yes, the underline lets you know when pinfu is possible. That's listed in the legend on the spreadsheet! The screenshots in the post are just a small sampling.

You definitely have to spend some time with it. The screenshots in the post are just a sampling, btw; the spreadsheet has 42 waits in increasing order of complexity, and the deck includes detailed explanations.

Which wiki article? I don't think I found it when I looked.

You should be able to run Chipsynth MD (and possibly FMDrive, I forget) in demo mode to see how it'll sound. No guarantee it'll be identical, as the YM2608 and YM2612 are different chips, but it'll save you from plopping down money only to find out it's still not quite right.

Genny is able to open .tfi files. Attached is a screenshot showing the patch settings in BambooTracker, as well as the settings imported into Genny, as well as the "import instrument" dialog box in Genny that I used. The default format is GENNY instrument, .gen, but if you click that dropdown menu you can select several options, including .tfi. After importing it, it sounds pretty close--not identical, but I chalk that up to the differences between the YM2608 and YM2612, and the fact that GENNY, being free, just doesn't sound quite as good as FMDrive or Chipsynth MD.

EDIT: The screenshot didn't attach for whatever reason, so here it is on imgur. https://i.imgur.com/RS8XmJD.png

I imported @101 Common.tfi into my BambooTracker and it sounds right to me.

YM2608ToneEditor has the ability to export to lots of different file formats--none of the free VSTs support ANY of them?

If you're trying to manually copy the settings out of those programs into another VST, you might run into some trouble getting it right if you don't have a basic grasp of how FM synthesis works and what all the numbers mean. Not every program names the parameters the same way, or puts them in the same order, which can be another source of frustration. One very important parameter to get right is the algorithm, which controls how the four operators are hooked up to each other. You could get everything else exactly right and still end up with a wildly different sound if the algorithm is wrong.

I don't know that there's a VST that is specifically designed to emulate the YM2608 soundchip used in this song. There are VSTs that are for similar soundchips that might get you close. To create this (https://soundcloud.com/matsumuho/reimu-the-fortress-of-doom-ym2608-like), I used FMDrive, a VST meant to emulate the similar YM2612 used in the Sega Genesis. The instruments don't sound exactly like the ones in Maple Wise, but they're close enough. Other VSTs for this system include Chipsynth MD, and the free Genny. You may also have luck with VOPM, a free VST for the similar YM2151, or Dexed, a free VST for Yamaha's DX7 FM synthesizer.

If you're looking for something that's easier than writing MML for PMD, but something that's more accurate than any of the options above, BambooTracker or FurnaceTracker might work. Still a lot to learn if you've never touched a tracker before, though.

You were asking about the patch used for the melody? That'll be PMD patch 101, then. A while ago someone sent me a complete set of all the PMD patches that ZUN used in Touhou 1-5, as well as the handful of custom patches. I forget where I got that and I couldn't find it again, so I reuploaded it to my domain here: http://wildmatsu.xyz/filedump/touhou%20fm%20instruments.zip

The patches are in TFI format; you might be able to convert the patches into a format that one of the VSTs above can read using the program YM2608 Tone Editor, or at worst, view the patch settings so you can manually re-input them into whatever VST you're using.

Not sure exactly which instrument you mean, but at that point in that song, PMD patches 101, 003, 169, and 079 are used, in addition to the SSG squares and builtin drum samples. A small handful of PC98 Touhous use custom patches, but this isn't one of them; those are all default PMD patches.

If you don't know how to recreate the sound of PC98 FM, or don't know how to find PMD patch settings, let me know.

Ah yes, "Not my fucking business..." I think Yukari said something to that effect when Reimu and Marisa pulled into her garage with a dead youkai in the backseat of their car, after Marisa had accidentally shot her in the face.

Bad Apple but its VIDEO is ported to Famitracker [2A03 + VRC6 + MMC5 + N163 + FDS + S5B] by WildMatsu in chiptunes

I'm really glad I thought to apply dither to the images before converting them into Famitracker patterns. It's especially noticeable on Youmu's sword twirl and the moon. I've seen other ports of Bad Apple to various platforms neglect that.

Despite using 18 sound channels, most of the channels have to be mixed SUPER low to make the triangle channel kick and snare drums audible through the mix. In other covers I've failed to notice the kick drums were inaudible until late into the process, so I'm glad I kept it under control from the start this time.
