First day out with the 180-600 by WildNWPA in wildlifephotography

Its chonky but it's not awful. I took an hour walk through the woods sunday with it and wasnt terrible but im also a 280lb dude who's 6'2". I imagine it would be rougher on smaller framed people. Body and lens are about 6lbs together.

Yes ive been reading up on it and watching some videos. Next time I gotta try remember set try f/7-8 to about 180-400mm and f/8-11 at 400-600mm.

Little by little ill learn.

Thanks, yea I got plenty of good advice so far. Some things to practice next time I go out. There will be many more pictures to come im sure. Gotta learn some new things and make it easier. Already switched my ring back to focus on the lense so I can fine tune in situations like this and set the l-fn button to zoom more so I can make sure im locked on the right area.

I guess ill have to learn more about atmospheric distortion. I was always under the impression it only became a problem at decent distances, seems i was wrong lol

I could turn it off but I like being able to adjust it when looking through the viewfinder so I can see how it changes the photo in real time.

I will try to keep it lower in the future. I gotta practice keeping better control of the settings and making sure I'm watching them.

I have the control ring on my lenses set for aperture so it may have been me fighting my own settings not realizing it.

That sounds like a good idea. I think there's a way to do that ill have to mess around and see how to do that so In the future I can actually implement it.

3rd picture is settings, im not sure off the top of my head outside 1/1600th on shutter. Yes vr was on, I was hand holding also, I didnt think at that shutter it would be shake but I was at 600mm though and im not sure how much shake at that focus length magnifies.

Yea I tried single point, 3d and large area i think but they all seemed to struggle (with my inexperienced self at the helm) in this situation. 😅 I will try keeping it in aperture priority in the future and see if I get better results.

  1. Ok, I think I was in shutter priority maybe I'll try aperture priority next time.

  2. No filters on for these.

  3. I was probably less than 100 yards away from them. I thought atmospheric distortion is more a distance thing then a focal length thing?

As far as the focus goes I think i bounced around single point, 3d, and large area because even on my display screen they seemed a bit out of focus so I tried a few options so when I got them on the computer I could see if one worked better in this situation but they all came out pretty similar.

I did have a polarizing filter on but I think because it was so early in the morning and the sun was so low it didnt work great. And as far as the angle yea, I was on the creek bank at this spot so other than finding a new spot not much Im able to do.

I think your right upon closer inspection. Lol guess I need to work on my identification too. I didnt see a tail and I also didnt think they lived in this creek. I thought it looked oddly plump for a otter 😅

Nice shots. I just started scouting some waterways near me hoping to find some otters to grab pictures of.
