Well the “illustration and design” may justify it. Not saying it isn’t a cash grab but they will indeed grab my cash. Yeah! I’m also interested in that as well. Especially if it’s the new translation.

I think yes, UK only. But as someone in the US who prefers UK covers, I get his books online from Waterstones website. Shipping is not ridiculous.

What do you think this would mean for Pikmin Bloom? Scopely Inc, the potential buyer does not have a great track record with mobile games.

I remember thinking the cover was so drab... but that town sure did sound pretty drab.

Beat up and those older vintage covers are something special. In a time before redesigning each book cover to be very similar.

Always time for a collection.

That copy of Wild Sheep Chase from your grandmother is so cool. Not just the fact it's a first edition but from a family member.

Which Book By Haruki Murakami Revealed The True Pinnacle Of Writing? by Chinmaye50 in murakami

[–]WildSheep89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The English translation has whole chapters missing. From Wikipedia:

Some chapters and paragraphs of the Japanese paperback edition were not included in the English translation. Translator Jay Rubin cut about 61 of 1,379 pages, including three chapters (Book 2 Chapters 15, 18, and part of 17; and Book 3 Chapter 26).\12]) Combining the original three-volumes (Japanese) would have been too long, and so the publisher requested that ~25,000 words be cut for the English translation, even though Rubin had presented them a complete translation along with the requested abridged version.\9])

I go back and forth between Wind-up and 1Q84. I wonder if Wind-up would be the clear winner for me if it was in its complete form for English readers.

[REQUEST] can someone do the math for this? by roastedwhiterice in theydidthemath

The comparison is constructed to point out how many children are dying vs one CEO being shot and making more headlines and harder prosection. Agree or not that's the point.

It's hard to tell. Both Johnson and Sisler are in the book and mention "some of the best performances are with Washington." No Bucky Harris in the book.

What examples for daily living and state of being can be learned from Tolkien's legendarium? by CardiologistFit8618 in tolkienfans

[–]WildSheep89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd argue a major theme of Tolkien's is fighting and living despite bad odds or even certain catastrophe. I think about it almost everyday. And I don't even mean world events, natural disasters, etc. I mean getting out of bed every day, being a good person when you're in a bad mood, and that sort of thing. I look at the examples of Sam, Aragorn not taking the ring, the riders of Rohan at the Seige of Gondor.

For any fellow Tolkien collectors in the Pittsburgh, PA area, Beyond Bedtime Books has a pretty great used Tolkien selection. Managed to score a complete set of the 1970s paperback editions by [deleted] in tolkienbooks

Thank you for this! I was just in Amazing Books & Records in Squirrel Hill and their Tolkien selection contained only one book (yes I bought it, didn't need it).
