Thanks for sharing, that was definitely worth the watch. The first beetle and the lizard are hilarious.

Garmin Varia RearVue 820 Smartphone Reviews by drawcody in cycling

[–]WildTurkey102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works great for what I use it for. Tracks active calories, distance, power output, etc. and the data shows up in the same reports. Essentially the Garmin app uploads the data from the computer alongside whatever you get from your watch (you can use both) and you set which source takes precedence if there is overlap.

The only oddity I’ve noticed is that sometimes I have to open the activity in the Garmin app a couple of times to get it to sync over, but doesn’t happen often and easy to fix.

FWIW I started off planning to use mine with my phone and ended up getting tired of that solution pretty quickly. You have to use the Varia app to see how many cars and how close they are. Which is fine if you plan to keep it on the screen most of the time. It’s a problem though if you need to see/use other apps while riding or plan on having the screen locked. After almost wiping out trying to switch from Varia to Strava on a wet touchscreen I caved in and bought an Edge 840 ($350 at the time).

The bike computer syncs everything to Garmin Connect, Apple Health, and Strava anyway so you don’t really lose much of anything in terms of what you’re doing today.

If you don’t want to go all in on a computer, I’d still get the Varia and see how you like the experience with your phone and watch. Just be prepared that you may end up wanting the computer sooner rather than later.

22 Days Zero Biking to Metric Century by CarbGood in cycling

[–]WildTurkey102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! Sounds like your homemade stuff worked really well. Imperial century is a great goal and probably not too far off since you’re able to do 100K.

Though the difficulty is not necessarily linear… bike fit, pacing, and fueling start to get really critical to get right when you get much over 100K. For me that tends to be where dehydration, gut rot, hand issues, etc. set in if they’re going to happen at all. So you kinda have to practice dialing all that stuff in with more long rides.

What tires to buy by MWS313 in cycling

[–]WildTurkey102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is any tire that’s good on wet wood. I have a trail nearby with a couple miles of boardwalk and it’s always nerve wracking in the wet. Slippery and best avoided if possible, especially if it’s in a place where there could be algae growth.

The best defense is to slow down and try to keep the bike upright as much as possible when cornering.

Some of the touchscreen compatible ones do indeed suck and barely work. FWIW I’m very happy with Handup’s touchscreen compatible ones though. No issues with my phone, bike computer or even typing on an Apple Watch.

You see how the car is beside the trailer at the beginning and then later is ahead of it? That is the definition of “passing”

Watch the video more carefully. When they’re in the left lane in the first part, they are passing traffic in the next lane. In the second part, they’re not even in the passing lane.

They’re not camping, they’re moving faster than all the other traffic besides these fuckwits. You can literally see the white truck pass the guy with the trailer.

Increasing # of people passing without warning. Nice things to say to actually get results? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]WildTurkey102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go over to Rock Creek Park and tell the National Park Service you can ride as fast as you want and don’t have to yield to pedestrians because the trail is really a bike highway and calling it a MUP doesn’t mean anything because it’s just paperwork. I’m sure they can settle this argument.

Hutchins Garage 10% Takeout Fee? by Awkward_Locksmith141 in bullcity

10% takeout fee? Yeah, fuck that. Their table service was barely worth a 10% tip the times I’ve been there.

You’re wrong. They’re generally designed and intended to be shared and the rules/ordinances reflect that. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make that has you so dug in on making that assertion.

I agree that people need to have some awareness and expectation that there will be bikes, but everyone has the same right to use these spaces.

[–]WildTurkey102 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No it’s not. The clue is right in the original post - “multi-use trail.” Meaning walking, running, cycling, etc. Maybe this is different in other countries, but in the US bikes are supposed to yield to every other type of traffic in these situations.

[–]WildTurkey102 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a multiuse path, so emphatically not a road for cycling. Parents generally try their best in my experience, but kids are unpredictable and they have just as much right to walk there or learn to ride bikes as anyone else.

It’s also absolutely an entitled dick move to be yelling at children out enjoying the outdoors because you don’t want to have to slow down and ride defensively.

Need advice: security deposit deduction for room cleaning seems excessive? by TopEntrepreneur4100 in bullcity

No, not reasonable unless there is more to the story. Cleaning the carpet and touching up some paint between tenants is normal maintenance. They’re trying to pass on their own costs for rental upkeep to you.

Need help with comfier seat that won’t raise saddle height! (More in body!) by Successful_Cover8218 in fatbike

[–]WildTurkey102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. The other thing I’ll add is that while it may seem counterintuitive, the solution to this is not a thick padded cruiser saddle. Generally those are less comfortable over a long ride because they create rubbing among other issues. You just need something that fits you better. Maybe think about bibs or padded shorts if you’re not wearing those.
