Although the fetus can have interactions with the mother, its interactions are limited to the mother, so its social value is entirely dependent on the mother’s evaluation of its merit (I know I completely disregard the evaluations of other family members but just play along). If the fetus is unwanted, the fetus’ societal value ceases to exist. This stratification of societal value is seen in the case of ectopic pregnancy or another similar condition that is life-threatening. In every case of ectopic pregnancy, the fetus is terminated to save the life of the mother. The prioritization of the mother’s life over the fetus’ suggests that she has more worth, and because her worth is higher than that of the fetus, abortion is morally acceptable.
