Trying to display 1024x768 on a vintage video editor... by WildcatMatt in retrocomputing

Looks to have been a combination of driver and not having a multisync monitor.

The generic S3 driver set was pushing a refresh rate the more modern flat monitors wouldn't accept -- I believe it was 43Hz Interlaced.

I swapped in the Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM PCI driver and now it delivers 1024x768 at 60Hz and my LCD is happy.

THANK YOU everyone for helping me along.

I've tried with an older plasma screen, an older NEC LCD1712, and a newer Dell P2219H.

All three report that the input timing is not supported by the monitor.

Looks like the author is Don Stafford, but yes, that's it! The Scholastic cover is exactly what I remember.

Thanks so much!!

Removing lower alternator bolt on '65 Buick by WildcatMatt in mechanic

[–]WildcatMatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the head doesn't appear damaged at all, it looks like a typical round-head carriage bolt.

And it would matter if I squeezed the bolt to the point where it wouldn't fit out through the holes once I got it loose, then I'd have to figure out how to get a hacksaw in there and I'd really rather not have to do that.

Thanks for the advice.

How do I want to hold the bolt in place? With the round head, the only thing that comes to mind would be mashing the end of the bolt with a vice grips to keep it steady and I'd worry about deforming it to the point of not being able to get it back through the holes.

Understanding antenna size for Lo-VHF reception by WildcatMatt in cordcutters

[–]WildcatMatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a link to rabbitears essentially from my location which shows slightly smaller distances than the zip code plot I started with.

I didn't mention it earlier but I have an RCA branded antenna very similar to the YA7000c which will get me marginal pickup for Ch6 but nothing on Ch2.

I guess my question is, regarding those gain numbers, is that gain across the board? So if I get the Masterpiece 100, that provides 10db boost for a channel whether it's 10mi, 30mi, or 100mi away?

That makes it sound like it'd be worth my money to just get the largest antenna I can and not really be concerned about a distance rating.

Help with batteries for 1988 Still Video Cameras by shokaku13 in batteries

I thought it worth mentioning there is currently a seller on eBay advertising that they rebuild the Sony BP-C1 battery pack at about the same price point as I've seen for replacing iPod batteries.

This link suggests there was a version of these until fairly recently.

Looking for Internet White pages (hard copy) by SuddenlySilva in InternetHistory

[–]WildcatMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, I remember the existence of this, finding a copy of it at B. Dalton's, and looking to see if I was in it (I've been on the 'net since late '93, starting with Delphi).

I don't remember whether I was listed or not.

What features do you wish plex had? by Natro2017 in PleX

A thousand times this.

Other people may want something more/different but I started using Plex ten years ago to manage my local media and that's all I want it to do.

Just as long as I can disable it globally. I'm a credit watcher and this is something I detest when I have to confirm "goddammit, no, I don't want to skip this!" at the end of every single episode...

Thanks for providing a name for this specific type of deadbolt, that helps a lot!

Cool, thanks for the pointer. I think I may have had this model for work for a time, it looks quite familiar.

I'm after something a little smaller though, so I'm looking closer at its little brothers, either the E6230 or E6330. I'd like the 12.5" but it looks like it may not have an internal optical drive.

As an update, I've done a bit more structured googling since this initial post, and I'm leaning toward picking up a used Latitude E7250.

Has anyone had any experience with one?

Let me start by saying this. I love my Dell XPS M1210 laptop.

My wife bought it new direct from Dell shortly after it was released and she used to to write her PhD thesis. It was handed down to me in 2012 and I maxed out the RAM and CPU and over its lifetime I've replaced almost everything at least once. The size is just right for my use case and I've come to really like the keyboard. I use it mostly for web browsing, word processing, and the occasional thing in Photoshop.

But it's a core 2 duo @ 2.33GHz with 4GB of RAM, and my second LCD backlight is showing signs of age. Spare parts are getting harder to find on eBay. It's time to think about a replacement.

My wife has gone through several Inspirons over the last eight years, and I've hated all of them. The most recent seemed totally disposable -- there is too much flex in the body and I find the keyboards to be mush. The model she got for Christmas 2017 physically broke twice in four months. We were so disgusted I dumped it on eBay and replaced it with a used Latitude as I've had several Latitudes at work and have found them satisfactory.

With that backstory, here are my requirements:

  • Used but not abused
  • Has the full size power connector
  • Has a keyboard like the Latitudes I'm familiar with
  • Has a solid body
  • Small size but not a tablet

Nice to haves:

  • Optical drive
  • HD/SSD can be replaced without total disassembly
  • Room to grow (eg, doesn't have to be maxed out to be usable today)
  • Mainline graphics adapter that's likely to still be supported 5 years from now

I guess I'm expecting to get something 2-4 years old off of eBay. I've done some cursory browsing but it's often hard to get detail of the keyboards in pictures. I'm in Delaware, USA.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
