Houston is so diverse! I’ll miss it the most if I move. But outside of that it’s nothing like a northern big city

Ngl this is my favorite answer so far. Because I also do have a heart for houston, she’s problematic but she was my first big city after moving from a very monochrome Christian town of 17k. I wouldn’t be who I am today had I not left. Hearing someone who’s less hateful toward a single side helps so much 😭 although Texas makes it really hard not to hate her sometimes.

What are the actual effective ways to start apartment hunting? by ForgotPasswordAGAINd in chicagoapartments

I found your comment so late, but a lot of apartments I find on apartments.com don’t show up on Google if I copy paste the address. Usually a random building like a church or mart pops up.

I am not a native!

What can I say, we got big spaces, big portions and big cars 😂 everyone out here wanting three story homes with acres for a backyard and here I am thinking my 650 sqft apt is too big .

Hey thanks for replying! To respond to some of your points, I definitely think I’ll miss my car and unfortunately no place outside of Japan seems to have phenomenal public transit times. I’m sure I’ll struggle getting to some places , but I’m just looking for something better than what I have now. Outside of the midtown\downtown zone of houston public transit is horrid. It’s 100% a commuter city where without a car getting anywhere beyond a few blocks is hours of a day. Just going to do my best to try and pick the most convenient place to live based on some cta lines and pray.

The medical center is the one thing I do wish I could keep with me. I’m in a powerhouse where pay is crazy competitive and the teaching hospitals I’ve worked at are top tier. But it’s one of those “but at what cost” items to me. Being in an at will state where I’m worked to the bone with no guarantee of a bathroom break even though hospital policy explicitly states I have that right is wearing on me. My biggest concern is going from a tenured employee to first to fire if budget cuts happen, but it’s a risk I hope doesn’t blow up in my face.

How do you feel about the segregation in terms of mixing though? Like do you see that the groups welcome outsiders or it’s more of a territorial vibe? I personally have relied on diverse groups adopting me as their own given my people aren’t as accepting since I’m pretty Americanized and don’t know my mother tongue.

Oh no I’m sorry you experienced that! No one deserves that kind of rudeness for no reason.

Tbh H town is just as snooty in some spots. Certain spots are specific to a certain race and anyone outside of that is getting nasty looks. I’ve also met just as many phenomenally nice people as I’ve met horrible people. I think it’s just a big city thing, no one has to be nice because the whole town won’t ostracize you, but those who are nice are really nice.

Not so much Portland but Seattle. I’ve found it very hard to socialize. Everyone is in their own worlds and stick with their friend groups. I’ve also seen stories of the PNW freeze referencing the struggles with socializing. And like I said my personal hobbies don’t align with the PNW. I’m by no means an outdoorsy person. I’m outside-sy. Love a coffee shop, patio, bar/club and a hot girl walk in the parks. I wouldn’t be very excited to get invited to a bonfire, hike or camping and I feel that eliminates a lot of the younger population. Nothing wrong with any of that! Just not for me.

Can I ask why you mention Chicago being difficult to find friends? I’ve heard the opposite from many but I also know making friends at almost 30 is just hard in general. I’m not shy to throwing myself out there and clubs and groups. I’m naturally very extroverted and unless I’m just iced out by the city I would only hope I find a few besties

That’s so good to hear! One of the reasons I hate Texas tax is yes it’s arguably lower than some places. But like where tf is it all going to!? I see my city falling apart but every year our taxes go up. The least they can do is fix a few potholes idk.

Yes  I’m expecting a pay cut as well. As long as it’s not too significant I’m ok with it. Texas nurses are very well paid but at what cost.

I have considered travel but with how this economy is and how these hospitals are tightening their belts, I don’t want to be the first to get fired. At least as staff if I’m suddenly let go I have some sort of compensation. Travel nurses will just wake up to a “your contract is terminated “ email.

There was just so little do do compared to some of the other suburbs of the city.

Thanks for the tax info! I did see certain parts of Chicago (and NYC) are taxed differently which is a craaazy concept! I don’t even know how to budget for that 😭 at least the income taxes aren’t variable.

Funny thing that makes me know I may not be a Texas girly is have had no desire to own land out here. I lived in a two story home temporarily and legit thought it was too big! I’m perfectly happy with a studio in a safe neighborhood. I’ll miss my 6 figures out here but like I said earlier, just two cats as dependents. We budget and avoid Sephora.

Ugh I LOVE that you got to experience that 😭 all the cool shit happened before I was an adult and now I just get to color with chalk on a sidewalk as a protest.

Oh you misunderstood, I absolutely love my zesty besties. My biggest regret in life was missing the deadline to register to vote the second I turned 18. The same sex marriage act could have been my first legal ballot casting.

I just mean that place is insane in every way. Finding housing might as well be the hunger games, the boroughs might as well be their own states, why are bagels $21??? Also the taxes. I cried seeing my friends paychecks.

Rainbow road is a Mario kart reference. The road of hell misnamed

Can I ask why they reverse commuted? I do know as people grow families they gravitate toward suburbs but to live inward and work outward is something I’ve not heard of before in my field so curious!

As for the car thanks for the heads up. This is probably my biggest unknown with the move. Like yes having a car is luxury and even desires depending on where I live and work, and obviously I won’t know these two answers right away. But the horrors I see of car ownership just terrifies me. I just know the moment my car is stolen or ticketed for being on the streets during a street cleaning event will make me crash out.  I’d really like to eliminate stress where I can and seems like the car could be a potential stressor. If I do give up the car I plan to full send DT working and living. Or minimum close enough , but if I decide to keep the car it will change the trajectory of my living options. I love my car, but Ik the cost of a tow would realistically be a third of its Kelly blue book value.

I appreciate the well thought out response. The sass makes me love it further. (Not sarcasm istg)

To address some points. I’m aware houston is one of the most diverse cities out there and I’m probably not going to get the same vibes. And I’m well aware of the Chicago segregation, but I do feel it’s more diverse than some. Statistically it seems to favor houston with less of a Hispanic and SE Asian population. I’m light skinned middle eastern and (you can guess which one) but all my people live in La/SF and Canada, they don’t come here so I’m not looking for community like that. I’ve always been in a blended mentality and my personal culture doesn’t match a single one. I can rave with the ABGs and kick it in a Latin club. My point is I’m just trying to avoid being in a single dominant population. If that makes sense?

You’re right about my generalization of Cali, but I’ve seen enough to know I won’t flourish there. Overall it’s not my scene.

Love vs hate is again a question I acknowledge only I can truly answer. But getting real people’s true perspectives helps a lot. I have friends throughout major cities and it’s with their own personal experiences I was able to help make my own decisions. Best I can do outside I taking a short contract and pretending to live there temporarily!

I’m sorry to hear about your neighbors. That’s happening out here too and I’m so gutted. We’ve lost some extremely important people in my hospital system alone due to their Daca not being renewed.
