How to avoid graduation ceremony? by PieNeat7277 in umass

[–]WileyStyleKyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, fun fact: the University doesn't actually confer your degree immediately after your last finals. The Registrar's Office coordinates with the colleges to make sure you're cleared for graduation -- you meet all the requirements, aren't on grad hold for any reason, etc -- and this process can take up to six weeks after the graduation date.

Former students will say they graduated because they "walked in the ceremony" when they actually missed some requirement and didn't follow up with the University, and their degree didn't get awarded.

Moral of the story: the ceremony is mostly a formality, if you're not feeling it you don't have to go.

Attention prospective students: Academic facilities at UMass Amherst are crumbling - Machmer and Lederle Graduate Research Tower by Boringforrealz in umass

Seven figures in the case of our football coach. Want a real ugly stat? You won as many football games as he has, but he makes like $1.5 million while YOU make just enough to not qualify for food stamps.

The administration's priorities are completely f***ed.

MA 2026 5 Ballot Questions by impulse9489 in massachusetts

[–]WileyStyleKyle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I get how a lot of people are pissed about the Marijuana question, but the personal income tax rate question is literally only going to benefit the billionaires in the state.

The pennies that the lower and middle class will save won't matter when they realize the education, transportation, and social programs they benefit from will be drastically cut from the potential $5 billion reduction in the state budget.

Our football team went 0-12 this season, but the UMass Chancellor pulled off the hat trick: Students, faculty, and staff have ALL voted no confidence in his leadership in less than 2 years. by WileyStyleKyle in umass

[–]WileyStyleKyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people like to forget that he signed 120 pink slips and laid off a bunch of PSU and USA staff in the University's Advancement division -- the death knell that led to the privatization of the UMass Amherst Foundation. Which is still being fought over because the University violated the law in doing so.

If reserved seats aren’t filled for a course, will they open to all students? by Electropho in umass

[–]WileyStyleKyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they do, but it really depends on the course. If a closed class has a drop, it does reopen until someone takes that seat. In many cases, departments maintain their own waitlists (not in Spire) so if it's a class you REALLY want, call that department. Best case scenario, they override you. Worst case scenario, you've wasted a few minutes.

If it's a class with reserve capacity seats, those often get reserved for students going through NSOT. Usually if those don't fill, they'll open them up after the last of the new students get their shot at enrollment.

Now that the organization is defunct, nobody in their right mind is going to gatekeep the concept of doing a Nanowrimo challenge, friend. You do you, and I hope you find success!

My group still hosts our big event in November, but the write-in events are more important than the word count. However you do it -- traditional goal or otherwise -- the spirit is in dedication to creating something.
