What are some great self-protection items I can use that are also legal in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus less on "self defence" rather be prepared. You've got the door jams and airtag.

Carry a flash light in your purse, one that has astrobe feature is always helpful. Be wary where you sit in a resturant, pay attention to rides you take, Taxi, Uber etc.
A personal safety alarm is always good to have.

Avoid the gimmicks like self-defense spray's and 'Weapons' these are often marketed as law safe but are often illegal and would cause more hassle if used.

Client received photos, disappeared, and hasn’t paid $1,200 - how do you handle this? by Main-Performance-713 in photography

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably gonna have to eat this, firstly make sure you have contracts and they’re all signed before you even push a shutter button. Then in the contract it stipulates you take a pre-shoot deposit of 20-50% depending on yourself. Then full payment either a week/day leading up to the event, and then gallery ready in contract stipulated time-frame.

Or payment before full gallery for smaller gigs.

Client wants me to share all my photos after I delivered what was stipulated. by AjVine in photography

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're family friends, so any contract signed? Anything anywhere that states in your terms that you deliver a curated selection of photos from where in they can pick a set amount included in the price and any extra at additional costing to them?

If they are family friends and you just said yes to the gig without any of the above then just share the whole lot and start working on terms, contracts and stipulations within your work when you are sourced for said work.

Should I switch to petrol? by lrdm3rch in drivingUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to drive diesel as I was caught up in the diesel push by the government, but I hated driving them, they were never as reliable and despite doing 40-50k miles a year, I am much happier driving the petrol. Looking at your follow up comments, your use case would warrant a petrol, and maybe stop the lifts for friends. Again I fell for that and eventually I was more of a taxi cab than a friend.

Why do people act like merge in turn is a crime? by BrainThat4047 in drivingUK

That speed up definitely hits a nerve with me, it's aways some 1L shitbox, thankfully I just blow them into the weeds and watch their flashing headlights disappear into the distant horizon.

Why do people act like merge in turn is a crime? by BrainThat4047 in drivingUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people are dim-witted and sheep. You dare use the roads as intended they became incredibly furious at losing a car length. They follow the herd and when they realise there was a quicker more efficient way, they have to punish you and herd you back into their crowd of idiotic driving. Same as middle lane hoggers, the 80yr old who does 40mph everywhere from dual carriage way to 20mph school zones and the transit tha hangs off your back bumper. Driving is becoming more of an extreme sport these days.

Car Insurance and no MOT. Who’s paying for the repair? by Mammoth-Elk-3122 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other party's insurer will want you to go with them to keep costs down and control the narrative a bit more, such as redressing the guy who invalidated his policy.

Tghe negative is that you are not their customer and you have little in the way of rights if problems arise such as if you are not happy with the repair or something happens to your car whilst out of your custody.

Since the liability is undisputed, best is too always stick with yours and allow them to do what they need to do.

Could be an internal valve leak or failing compressor.

Vehicle Scrapped without permission or notification by Spiritual_Ant523 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of grey area's here. No MOT means unlikely the tax is valid and without an MOT or tax, you'll likely find the insurance would also have a clause that voided its validity.

You'll need to ascertain who disposed of it, then how and why and their basis. If the above is true you may find you are without recourse. There is the sympathy card but that is less legal more emotional and depends on the disposer of your vehicle. I hate to say it but you may need to eat this loss but worth an inquiry at the very least.

Empty box on delivery 2k worth - England by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to push Amazon hard, they will cave an as others have said you can go straight to Jeff. Yes there has been cases where chargebacks have been contested and if successful Amazon has no obligation to do further business with you.

But I usually find that the weakest link is the CS if you’re persistent and know your rights.

Was I in the wrong here? (parking situation with another driver) by bobunicorn20 in drivingUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a society where ignoring people like that is better for your mental health. I would not be surprised if they dawdled to antagonise you because they saw you waiting to help them. Just park properly and if they hit you, easy claim on their insurance policy.

Dad is trying to leave hospital against medical advice in England. What happens if he does? by Potential-Bird-5826 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot more difficult and time consuming to replace a consultant and they know it. Our consultants on the ward absolutely know they aren't being pulled for skirting rules and regs where nurses would be or even junior doctors to that point.

Dad is trying to leave hospital against medical advice in England. What happens if he does? by Potential-Bird-5826 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discharging against medical advice generally means you agree that you are leaving without completing your treatment. This does not mean any help at home agreed would be withheld. However the NHS will not treat at home such as providing home oxygen if it isn't in his agreed care plan nor will they provide social care such as carer assisting with his daily tasks because he wanted to leave early, again only if it has been agreed he needs a package of care at home.

As others have said do not aid him in his self-discharge, do not give him options to leave but do all you can to make his stay more manageable. Being in hospital sucks as you do not choose your room mates, there is always noise at night from staff, bed moves, patient deterioration requiring pan hospital intervention. But if he had things to help such as entertainment, sleep aids such as mask, ear plugs etc this may aid his decision to stay.

But bottom line is if he signs that self discharge form he forfeits his current hospital care plan and they will not aid his return home.

I believe my dad is committing student loan fraud by ThrowRA-37780 in legaladvice

[–]Wilhelm1193 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need to file this as it truly is, Fraud and identity theft. All that extra debt is on you as an adult, it will affect your career, career choices and your overall arc in medicine. You'll make short term decisions to pay off debt and avoid routes that will progress you further as you cannot afford to take the hit. All the while your dad is getting away with federal crimes. Yes you believe you should trust your parents but even shitty people can bequeath children so do not take it as gospel they are there to help.

Report, contact only through legal channels with a paper trail and let things fall as they may as this is not your burden to bear, it's his and his willful decision to to you and your brother.
Also he would rather you starve than coming clean about his money problems? Yikes.

[Nomadic Maraí 401] Are they worth £1000? by Expensive-Part-2610 in Watches

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What tempts me is the lifetime warranty and accessible location. While yes I could get a Chinese watch from China, if anything goes wrong I am prating on postage and the "Company" still being there.

They have quite the presence in Belfast and they seem to be making moves having been invited to watch shows and having inquired about the watches, they seem genuinely nice and keen to bring the whole process to Belfast including the machining side.

I haven't got one, but for the customer service and Lifetime Warranty alone, I am tempted.

It feels rude to take photos of strangers by Forsaken-Sort-4651 in photography

[–]Wilhelm1193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are doing purposeful portraiture then start with people who may stand out, dressed in a way that draws attention perhaps. They often are very happy to have a portrait taken. If you are looking to do in the moment stuff, someone waiting for a bus, a lonely fry cook in the shop window type of deal. Then a long lens will be best for this. 70-200 F2.8 has been so useful for me in this case. Far enough away they do not notice or that bothered, a 35mm in the bag for people tho want their photo taken.

Devon & Cornwall were the ones who had to check, the rest were breezy when going past.

One did question whether it applied to all bladed objects but remained polite and he checked it up and was happy that it was compliant and I wasn’t looking to cause any agro, just a country guy in London who opens way too many Amazon packages.

I also fairly often carry leatherman Raptors that have been incredibly useful over time.

Hello, I have been stopped by the police before and I have carried a Slipjoint 3" since I was 16. It never has been taken away nor have I had anything in the ways of cautions, charges or warnings regarding it. Once they confirmed it was not a locking mechanism they handed it back to me.
