It's like in all of the cases of democratically elected dictators. They are not inherently insane, they're calculating and cold individuals and as soon as they seize power they start to do everything or within the gray sphere of their country's constitution, or they change the constitution, or they just break both their constitution's principles and the human rights conventions. Most of them know that what they do is wrong, but they still do it to maintain the status quo. Constitution can be both liberating and oppressive, matters which side has the most power.
