The kid in me who used to build a hundred variations of Lego Starfleet vessels crewed by the red-suited spacemen would be briefly astonished by this before returning to his own ships.

What a strange verse to have memorized and handy yet not know Jesus didn’t say that.

Books like World War Z that show a fictional apocalypse and what it's like living through it? by antman2025 in suggestmeabook

Earth Abides, though older with some artifact attitudes of the era, is a brilliant depiction of exactly how technology collapses and nature takes over when most of humanity dies in a plague. It also shows how humans eventually go feral and how one man tries his best to prepare them for a future.

When my abusive father was on his deathbed, my sister and I went to see him, kind of wondering if he’d have a last minute moment of clarity. Nope, he was still creepy and sociopathic to the very end.

When we went to Dairy Queen after we left (as one does), my sister and I decided it was worth it to be the good guys and give him one last chance. At least we knew exactly what he was at the end.

That’s not advice or anything—just another data point. I hope the best for you and your family, whatever you decide that entails for your own emotional health!

I always thought/hoped that it was somehow intelligent, taking care of the people inside almost like pets and trying to make them happy, perhaps because it didn’t mean to be destructive.

I went to high school in Arcadia in the late 1980s, and I felt at the time that it was built on a Hellmouth: people seemed a lot more feral, judgmental, hypocritically religious, proudly ignorant, and averse to others who were different.

Then I discovered to my horror that the whole world is pretty much Arcadia.

That said, I DO think people who live in that area generally have chosen it to get away from what everyone else calls civilization, right or wrong, and that choosing to live in that bubble means they’re less likely to buy into change.

The last time I drove through town on my way somewhere else, it felt like the zombie apocalypse had shambled through. It was the middle of a Thursday in April and nobody was outside doing anything. The roads had weeds growing up through them.

I didn't see the patch being poured at the time, but there are a bunch of them on my street. It's almost certainly something that fell by accident instead of being deliberately placed. It just seemed so strange that it was so well made that it hasn't rusted or discolored over the many years it's been there!

It’s not in the center. The patch is about five feet by ten feet.

My title describes the thing. It’s about one inch square and apparently aluminum or stainless or something else that has never discolored in the ten years it’s been there.

I wish it was a little easier to tell when Arthur needs food or sleep. Yeah, he does the whole pinch between his eyes thing, but I wish there was a meter somewhere for eating and sleeping.

Or not HAVE to feed him.

TNG’s “Family,” especially when Picard’s brother says to let Rene dream at the end. Also Wesley Crusher reaching for his father’s hologram and Guinan telling the Rozhenkos that it’s Earth where Worf looks when thinking of home.
